My Very Best Lyrics
Give that girl my very best
Though it never made the grade
When it seems that it’s just not enough to love
Then love lie down
And would you tell her
Not to talk as if I died
Though a tiny part just did
And would you tell her
I’m from a long line of survivors
And I’ll be swinging with the kids
Keep your sympathy
Don’t need the healing to start
You’ve gone
Gone and made a beautiful hole in my heart
In the corner of the room
In the room we used to love
Of the love we should say this
There were switches never flicked
Long away and far apart
That’s how forest fires start
Start again it felt like this
Fresh and simple as a kiss
I bounce these feelings off the moon
The echoes don’t come back
Keep your sympathy
Don’t need the healing to start
You’ve gone
Gone and made a beautiful hole in my heart
Though it never made the grade
When it seems that it’s just not enough to love
Then love lie down
And would you tell her
Not to talk as if I died
Though a tiny part just did
And would you tell her
I’m from a long line of survivors
And I’ll be swinging with the kids
Don’t need the healing to start
You’ve gone
Gone and made a beautiful hole in my heart

That’s how forest fires start
Start again it felt like this
Fresh and simple as a kiss
I bounce these feelings off the moon
The echoes don’t come back
Don’t need the healing to start
You’ve gone
Gone and made a beautiful hole in my heart

It's about the breakdown of a relationship which the narrator is so thankful he had that he can't hold any contempt for the (now) ex. "You've gone, gone and made a beautiful hole in my heart" - he's letting her know that the breakup has broken his heart and he'll never forget that hurt, but that he's proud to bare the scar. He's also looking back on things he may have done differently but that now he'll never know.
It's a beautiful song and sums up my last relationship fantastically.
Yep, pretty self-explanatory song - the relationship's gone wrong but Guy can look back on it with fondness and hold no regrets. Beautifully written, Guy Garvey's lyrics are always fantastic.
"And would you tell her not to talk as if I died/Though a tiny part just did" - that line just kills me every time.
This song, however straightforward, has some truly inspiring lyrics...incredible imagery, fits the scene perfectly. We've all experienced this...but few have expressed it as well as in this song...I applaud Guy Garvey and the Elbows!
This song is so great, I can relate to every line. Regret, melancholy and a sad sort of happiness, all wrapped in beautiful music. Greatness!
Imagine starting a break-up song with "Well, give that girl my very best". It's so un-rock n' roll, it's brilliant.
To me the song's subdued tone and lack of any bitterness make it even more poignant. Guy is just quietly accepting that love has failed: "If it seems that it's just not enough to love, then love lie down".
The line "There were switches never flicked" is great too. He's looking back and wishing he'd made more of what he had while he had it, thinking of opportunities that he let pass and now he'll never have again.
Like most of Elbow's songs, this one doesn't take much analysis - Guy's lyrics are so direct, ordinary and effortless. And so great. I love Elbow.
"I bounce these feelings off the moon The echoes don't come back"
Love that...:)
This is probably about Edith.
Think the whole album is about his breakup with Edith. Not a bad legacy for the relationship. Always intrigued by:
