Ok. Well. Ben wrote this while he was on an air plane with jenny. And its pretty true that it was. I think that it is literal. Cause ben isnnt really a guy that beats around the bush to much with the meaning of his song. So. I think it was something he was just messing around with and he decided to write something simple. But. The support fot it being a new relationship makes sense as well. Really good sense. I like that interpretation. Its very poetic |

Ok. So. I think this song is about addiction. Specifically alcoholism. I grew up with alcoholic parents and they descrbed what it was like. And it just sounds a lot like this song. They are both sober now and have been for a long time. So that's good. The prison is the addiction its self. Where you just can't break free of it. When he says "these people aren't your friends", what he's saying is when your an alcoholic you think everyones against you and that is how it really is. The "inhaling thrills" line I think is about coke. And "the tumblers are drained and then flooded again and again" is literally martini tumblers being filled and emptied. The "guards" he talks about I wasthinking were eiter maybe like boucers at a club or bar or even a metaphor for the thing that's keeping him and addict. And " you may case the ground from the cascades to puget sound, but you are not permitted to leave" is like you can stop drinking but you'll alaways still be addicted to it no matter what. When he talks about "the world out there like the one I saw on the screen" an it being "almost to bright to see I think it means that is life is dark and glooming and when he thinks of the bright world out there its hard for him to see cause he feels like he has no hope. And his drinking isn't a party cause it happens everynight cause he's an alcoholic. And he's trying to pretend that its all ok when its not which relates to the candelabra line.
