It sounds to me like someone with an awful misguided sense of entitlement based on their faith or being a "chosen one". It evokes a sense of some sort violent crime spree which is motivated by a delusion. |

| Pink – Please Don't Leave Me Lyrics

I'm not a Pink fan, but this song really means something to me. It's actually a very interesting mainstream track, considering there was a time when you couldn't turn on the tv without some weird form of pop feminism on screen. It's sort of the anti-Meredith Brookes. I never thought a sentiment like this would come from Pink, who seemed to be a spearhead figure in the "don't care what anyone thinks about you, do your own thing". I appreciated the introspection when I first heard the song - it's difficult being in a relationship where one person is unhappy and insecure with themself and decides to take it out on the other person constantly. You almost have to endure a form of emotional abuse, which can wear you out completely - and people generally expect you to take it because it's not physical.
Luckily, people can change. |

It's pretty weird reading the lyrics for the first time. I always thought this song was literally about going to do basic training in the military. Negative home, no one serves coffee, etc. I always picture a guy at the end of his tether, writing to his dad saying he's not going to make it through. That whole weird army concept of breaking you down and building you up. The total alienation if you're not into the total authority vibe. |

| Birdy – People Help the People (Cherry Ghost cover) Lyrics

I wish artists like Birdy didn't exist and record companies pushed artists like Cherry Ghost instead. An entire album of covers for your debut? Lame. Mainstreaming fringe bands for the dinner party set? Lame. These songs are good, they don't need the 'sad girl with a piano'-ification to make them relevant. |

Crumbs. Every song by a recovering addict gets instantly interpreted as being about drugs. It's like when you hang out with potheads and all they ever talk about is pot. This song sounds like it's about being surrounded by the buzz and chaos of modern life, and using resignation and humour to overcome this. The chaotic buildup and sweet, mellow transition to the last part (Even on a cloudy day) seems to bear this out. I agree with the dude who said the music gives it away. |

It's kind of sickening how talented Joanna Newsom is. And good looking to boot. |

Lol, I like the housekeeper intepretation. And the red ghost thing is definitely the best line. |

I really wish they didn't put songs like this on the album. The lame murder ballad lyric part is infantile. I feel these guys have promise, but this is a horrible opening track, and lyrically it's pathetic. |

After reading some of the other comments on the song, it's strange that I never looked at the possibility that the primary subjects are religion and death. It does make sense, but the first time I heard the song my immeadiate reaction was that this IS a personal song, either about a relationship with a family member or a lover (and the difficulties of having such a relationship when one person is a believer and the other not). I'm probably wrong, but I still like to think it's about that.
"Collected my belongings and I left the jail
Well, thanks for the time, I needed to think a spell"
This seems a very angry (but oddly mature) line in the song, and I do get the impression he's talking about the trapped feeling one gets in a dying, stifling relationship with someone you can't see eye to eye with.
"The more we move ahead the more we’re stuck in rewind"
This seems to reinforce that idea.
It's certainly possible to make a relationship work between people with different points of view on religion, but it's really difficult sometimes. Especially when one person just wants to enjoy life, and the other wants to live up to some strange set of manufactured ideals. |

does anyone feel this album has a narrative running through it? I can't help getting the impression that the story of a relationship unfolds as the album progresses. But it's not a concept album as such, and there doesn't seem to be clear starting point (or the songs aren't in chronological order). I can't figure out if this song should be at the end of the story, or the beginning, or the middle. |
