People Help the People (Cherry Ghost cover) Lyrics
God knows what is hiding in those weak and drunken hearts
Guess you kissed the girls and made them cry
Those hard-faced queens of misadventure
God knows what is hiding in those weak and sunken eyes
Fiery throngs of muted angels
Giving love and getting nothing back
People help the people
And if you're homesick, give me your hand and I'll hold it
People help the people
Nothing will drag you down
Oh and if I had a brain, oh and if I had a brain
I'd be cold as a stone and rich as the fool
That turned all those good hearts away
God knows what is hiding in this world of little consequence
Behind the tears, inside the lies
A thousand slowly dying sunsets
God knows what is hiding in those weak and drunken hearts
Guess the loneliness came knocking
No one needs to be alone, oh save me
People help the people
And if you're homesick, give me your hand and I'll hold it
People help the people
Nothing will drag you down
Oh and if I had a brain, oh and if I had a brain
I'd be cold as a stone and rich as the fool
That turned all those good hearts away
People help the people
And if you're homesick, give me your hand and I'll hold it
People help the people
Nothing will drag you down
Oh and if I had a brain, oh and if I had a brain
I'd be cold as a stone and rich as the fool

The song is about how people are becoming greedy and spoiled and thinking with their heads rather than their hearts. But how a person with a kind heart is willing to give something but not expect anything in return. About how not every one is cold hearted, but some people are, and they are hurting others.
Birdy's rendition is simply gorgeous, she's such a talented girl with a bright future ahead of her.
Just lovely
"God knows what is hiding in those weak and drunken hearts" is a slight deviation from a line by Fyodor Dostoevsky in his epic philosophical novel "The Idiot". The line was originally, "God only knows what is hidden in those weak and drunken hearts." It is a line by one of the characters (Rogozhyn) when he is describing a scene that he witnessed. So, I guess Birdy borrowed from Cherry Ghost and someone from Cherry Ghost must read Dostoevsky. It is not, by any means, a well-known or often used line from the book.
This girl is so young and talented. Is this song wriiten by her or Cherry Ghost?
Cherry Ghost wrote it. Almost all of Birdy's first album is her cover versions of songs that she likes. Very well done though. She can put meaning into a song that the original band may or may not have intended. Tempo, instrumentation, and tone of voice can change a song so much that the listener walks away with a completely different impression.

This song is so much about me, I love this version
In my twenties, I lived through a terrorist attack. I had PTSD that made it difficult to concentrate and succeed in school. For a while, I felt very insecure about whether or not I had a "brain" as she sings in the song.
When I found this song I listened to it on repeat endlessly. The verse hit me hard, all the questioning about why there is such violence in the world, why so many people struggle and are lonely. The chorus gives me the strongest emotions- that perhaps it's because she doesn't have a brain she is not as "cold as a stone and rich as the fool/That turned all those good hearts away." Instead, she has empathy- something you can only have when you don't believe you have all the answers.
