i think the first stanza is talking about how people [the 'apostles'] dont really know whats important and would give away the things that are really valuable [sell off my saviour] for temporary pleasure and satisfaction [for a set of new rings and some sandals]. the second verse seems to say basically the same thing but it shows how acquiring material things doesnt really make you happy for long. [they're sick of it all and they're bankrupt on selling.] the verse talking about college applies the same ideas but to education and self-importance. if you talk loud and use big words maybe you'll have a bigger impact on people. but really you just look like a pompous asshole. [and it took a long time until I came clean with myself. i'd grown clean out of love with my lover. i still love her, loved her more when she used to be sober. and I was kinder.] to me, this is talking about an addiction to drugs. the references to being clean could be seen as a reference to getting off of drugs. just a guess, but this is what i get out of the lyrics. |

i dont mean to sound cheesy. and stupid. but when i first heard this song was on a trip back from roswell with my boyfriend. his ipod was on shuffle and this song came on. and he went, 'oh! ive been meaning to show this ne to you. i learned how to play it. and we should play it at our wedding.' that was the first mention ever of a wedding and a concrete long-term relationship. it made me realize that he thought about us being together as much, if not more so then i do. c: |

the lines about warm milk, laxatives, etc are all about things he used to deal with his addictions. the warm milk helps him fall asleep. laxatives are commonly used by addicts to counter-effect the constipation of certain drugs. and cherry flavoured antacids were being used to help with indegestion. he sounds so sad when he sings this. like he knows that his addiction is getting the best of him. |
