Tim McGraw – Live Like You Were Dying Lyrics 17 years ago
ok, this probably shouldn't be confusing but i have never understood who is dying... the guy who the narrator is talking to seems to be the one... but then he says "i went three times that year i lost my dad" ... was his dad also dying at the same time? or did that happen first?

Andrew Bird – Imitosis Lyrics 17 years ago
like Scaremongering, i take the line "what's mistaken for closeness is just a case of mitosis" to mean that what your brain thinks is love is actually just your body's drive to have sex and therefore reproduce (thus causing mitosis in the growing fetus).

They Might Be Giants – She's An Angel Lyrics 17 years ago
i also always thought the chorus of this song was referencing city of angels (or wings of desire, i suppose).

Barenaked Ladies – Be My Yoko Ono Lyrics 18 years ago
i also think "hand in hand and hand in hand in glove" is a reference to the smiths' "hand in glove"

XTC – Senses Working Overtime Lyrics 18 years ago
i love this song, and i'm in the middle of writing a paper about synesthesia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synesthesia), and i know this is super weird, but does anyone see why i kinda see synesthesia in the lyrics? all the talk of senses one right after the other makes me feel like maybe they are getting mixed up. maybe i'm just super tired... but anyway... i decided to title my paper "senses working overtime" bc either way, it's a cool and appropriate title :)

They Might Be Giants – Older Lyrics 18 years ago
i also think the lyric is "day" not "tale."
every time i hear this song i think of how much older THEY are since they recorded the song, and it makes me kind of sad.

They Might Be Giants – Aka Driver Lyrics 18 years ago
lots of bands use brand names in their songs. i don't really know why it would be legally different for song titles, though...

They Might Be Giants – Boat Of Car Lyrics 18 years ago
i have always wondered what this song meant... tucker, your interpretation is totally creepy, but makes sense!

Andrew Bird – Spare-Ohs Lyrics 18 years ago
does anyone have thoughts about why he named it "spare-ohs"? i can't think of anything past the obvious homophony with "sparrows"

Andrew Bird – Armchairs Lyrics 18 years ago
echo24, i agree that the first stanza is about a certain girl, andrew dreamed about approaching her (bridging the gap between their chairs) but didn't. so the song describes missed opportunities, as la.cienega pointed out.

i also like that the "armchair calls to you" kind of mirrors the chairs in the first stanza. i think it could mean that the armchair in his memory is calling to him, like he wants to go back in time and sit in that chair and speak up to that girl... this idea of changing the past works well with the obvious theme of time.

i love the idea of the "crooked bow" referring to a violin- it makes the phrase "time's a crooked bow" sound to me like time passes by quickly, and sometimes you don't realize it until you have a sign, like you notice that your bow has become crooked.

Andrew Bird – Heretics Lyrics 18 years ago
i always thought the line "we'll sew a doll about it" was "we're so in doubt about it," which fit in with the idea of being a heretic. oh well.

Quisquilloso, i like the idea that it could refer to the bush administration. i think it especially fits with the lines from "how about some credit now" to "with a slow and vicious gun"
