The Cure – Shiver and Shake Lyrics 11 months ago
According to a documentary, this song was about Lol Tolhurst who by this stage had become a drunken, useless part of the band contributing next to nothing. He was attributed to playing the broken flute sound in the background of the Homesick track and that was about it. He may have inspired the song with it however.
Aparently he was nothing but a flogging horse in the band who everybody despised, including and possibly especially Smith who kept him on only because he was the only original member and was part of the bands social life.
According to the documentary, he was made to stand in front of Smith in the studio while the lyrics were being recorded.
Tolhurst was fired when the he listened to the final cut and criticized it wasn't a Cure album and that most of the songs were shit.

Make of all this what you will, but it was clear that Tolhurst was no longer appreciated by the band at this stage.

For me it's about existence and how we're all going to die, but how massive this experience of being alive is. (But you and I, we're gonna die, the world keeps spinning round we don't know why...), pretty sure it says gonna the first time on the album.

I'm sure this song has many interpretations for many different people. Even Noel said is was just off the top of his head. But that's mine,

@[x3mollyanne_o5:52756] I agree. I'd never considered that. And I guess the lesson was that, while lust was the initial motive for a fling that had no future due to distance, and that distance possibly being seen as an easy-out when all was done, the fling turned out to be a 'love to end all loves' and herein lies the painful, eternal lesson. Thanks for that.

@[what123ever:52384] Angular banjoes? offensive? Why? Are banjoes too low and redneck for your class? Or Angles too sharp?
Let this racist banjo loving country bumkin provide some context on the concept of “angularity” in music theory. In Western music, scales and melodies are typically described as having a “linear” or “horizontal” structure, where notes are arranged in a sequence of whole and half steps. In contrast, “angular” or “disjunct” melodies and harmonies refer to those that depart from this linear structure, often featuring unexpected leaps or jumps between notes. To be precise, in the context of scales, an “angular pentatonic scale” would imply a pentatonic scale with a non-linear or disjunct structure, potentially incorporating intervals other than whole and half steps.

And how pretentious that us mere westerners would dare to consider aspects of Eastern philosophy. As if we haven't colonized enough already!!!

Go have a wank,

Cocteau Twins – Pur Lyrics 1 year ago
I was hoping to come here to find the answers but I guess I can only give my interpretation.
This album is deceptively raw and tender, being written after Frazer and Guthrie's marriage breakup and the birth of her daughter.
With that in mind, this song sounds to me like she is dealing with a crying child and with all her love, and a new mothers frustrations, attempting to calm the child with understanding that the child is a small person who cannot communicate any other way but by crying. I make it sound so mundane but that's what the Cocteau twins do, turn the mundane into the sacred. No less here in this song.

This songs vocals was performed by a number of different trial vocalists after Rotten had left the band. Rotten is not singing on this track as this was after his infamous "Do you ever feel you've been cheated?" moment before he left the group mid performance.
The movie of the same name has video of this trial vocal performance. In fact, this song is the actual take of that trial.

@Bite Me No, I totally get it. It cracked me up too. And just a note, Johnny Rotten had left the band at this stage. The guy who sang this was a tryout for his position, That's why the vocalists keep changing in this song. They are all trial vocalists. The movie explains it. But in short, Rotten didn't sing this.

Thank you for supplying these lyrics. I've been looking for them for years. Aparently they were originally removed by the owners, (I guess I can see why) but they are beautiful. However, I always find the unworded interpretation that sits in my imagination, away from the constraints of meaning more fulfilling when it comes to Frazer's voice.
I'll forget in time so no trouble. It will return to being ineffably beautiful soon enough.

Talk Talk – Living In Another World Lyrics 2 years ago
I was devastated to hear that Mark Hollis had died. He was only 64. I could have imagined him living into his late years, planting a crop on a small farm away from the music industry he so loathed. His lyrics, especially his later work reflected a deep spirituality and a sincerity rarely found in art, or anywhere for that matter.

This is just a general comment, not specifically related to the song, which in retrospect does have some connection to this. I just looked it up to confirm what I thought he was singing. He never made a great effort to be understood, either in his singing style or his music. Guess that's why I Ioved his music so much. It made sense on a level that words don't operate in. Yet he still found the right ones to place against it.
Love, always.

David Bowie – D.J. Lyrics 2 years ago
I never really listened to this song, assuming it to be a metaphor for Bowies own success, but suddenly it seemed to make sense in having its own story.

He starts off losing his mundane job, no girl, (probably dancing out there
somewhere)

He then reinvents himself as a D.J, goes through the grind of 'fast food, lights and evening faces', making his arduous way to the top.

Finally in success, he has the crowds at his will. He looks down and sees the man that fired him, 'He used to be my boss and now he is a puppet dancer'

and exclaims in victory. "I am a D.J and I've got believers, believers in me"

He has reached a messianic point in his life.

Leonard Cohen – First We Take Manhattan Lyrics 3 years ago
This is about the Jewish plot to take over the world.
Cohen was a Jew. We loved them as losers, but now they might just win. He was one of those Jews moving through the stations to the concentration camps. They prayed for revenge, now their revenge begins.
Guided by their religious beliefs from heaven, to take over the world and reign from Jerusalem, first they take Manhattan, (America) then Berlin, (The world).
They try to change the system from within, but Hitler stopped that and sentenced them to twenty years of 'patience' after 1942, till when the song was written approx.
They are now coming to reward the "goyim" for the Holocaust.
First they take Manhattan, then Berlin…

I never liked this song amongst their other material. Always interpreted it as a wet love song, but then by chance began listening to it as a song from the perspective of a man dying, (which I think is actually the true perspective) and it made all the difference. especially the crescendo.
Now I really respect the song.

Fantastic song! Great vocal performance and evocative lyrics.\n\nI get a dystopian feel. I sense he legitimately doesn\'t know who he is. There is much left to the imagination of the listener with his \'interrogator\' novelistically watching the skies while sipping a soda to say "you got nothing to fear" \n\nNot dissimmilar to the Games without frontiers picture, (same continnuum?)\n\nBrilliant!

Leonard Cohen – First We Take Manhattan Lyrics 4 years ago
Cohen is Jewish (Cohen is King in Hebrew)
Judaic belief is that a Jewish Messiah will come. kill all the Christians and Idol Worshippers and rule the Goyim from Jerusalem.

The Jewish Messiah differs from the Christian one. The Christian one comes down from the sky & is entirely Supernatural.

The Jewish Messiah is not like that. Their Messiah, or Moshiach, is a normal himan being with amazing ruling powers. He is anointed King of Israel, from where he begins his conquest of any Nation that will not bow to the God of Israel and the Nation Israel.

I believe this is what this song is about.

First we take Manhattan, where the largest community of Hassidic Jews live in the World.

Then we take Berlin. Berlin signifies Amalek, the Jews most hated foe. According to the Jews, it is a commandment to destroy Amalek and lay any memory of Amalek to waste.

This song reminds me of the International Jewish Machinations to bring about this World Takeover.

Steely Dan – Pretzel Logic Lyrics 5 years ago
Prior to discovering that the song was about Time Travel, I initially interpreted it as an existential song about the fleeting of time. In this vein, the song struck me down like a ton of bricks.

The laxxy R&B of the verse gives way to a bittersweet chords of (what I felt as) an existential loss that covers the entire time of humanity and then keeps going.

At one point he appears to be talking in the present then that moment is stolen away by the reality of "That was a long time ago - Oh Yeah".

Even if it is about Time Travel, as I know Fagen was in love with Childhood fantasies, I still feel it as a call to our fleeting existence.

Depeche Mode – John The Revelator Lyrics 5 years ago
Songs great but in my opinion it is attacking Christianity where the actual attack in this case should be Judaism. Why.

Firstly, this is not an apology to Christianity or any of the three Abrahamic religions but let's get the facts straight.

Christianity did not 'Steal' God from Jews or Muslims. Islam wasn't even around when Christianity was created.
What happened was that Christians (Who were Jews) came to the conclusion that Judaism was rotten to the core and decided to bring it back to the immaterial worship of a God that the Jews were meant to be worshipping but instead replaced it with a bunch of rituals and self aggrandizing culture. (The Chosen Ones)

'John the Revelator' did not make this stuff up in a hallucinogenic trip on a Greek Isle because he is spiteful.

All his prophecies were actually from the Judaic, Talmudic, traditions brought out of Babylon which believe that Jews will only 'repair the world' (Tikkun Olam) once all idol worship is destroyed and non Jews rule globally over the Gentiles in a Judaic paradise, making everyone worship God under punishment of death. Gentiles will server the Jews as Slaves to help the Jews keep the world in a proper state of God Worship.

So you see, John the revelator is not the bad guy, nor are Christians. John is the guy telling us what the Jews have in store for Idol Worshippers (Christians) and sinners (basically non Jews (Goyim - Nations -Cattle) who will not submit to Jewish law and take the cattle mark of 666) and that is death by the cutting off of ones head in a global blood bath in the Messianic Age when the Jewish Messiah is anointed King of the Earth. John considers this King that the Jews await as the Antichrists.

John is not creating this, hoping for it or planning it. It is a warning against the Jewish aspiration to rule the planet from Third Temple in Jerusalem. All this is fact checkable.

So in my opinion, this song is wrongfully attacking Christianity. (So frikken cool to attack Christians and so frikken dangerous to attack Jews - Who is your master?) Interesting that Daves' son married a Jewish girl living in Israel, so you can see where the love lies. Great band though. Need Wilder back though.

I forgot my book
At the fountain stairs
At a chapter on symmetry
Nobody cares
And I had a smoke
While I traced the squares
Put my finger to concrete
Felt the autumn air

When I look around
I can feel it spinning
Feet on the ground
Head on the ceiling

Sun on my shirt
Sweat on my hands
All falling in retrograde
Cancel all my plans
And I had to look
At the marching band
Skip across the pavement
Nobody's there

When I look around
I can feel it spinning
Feet on the ground
Head on the ceiling

The Human League – Mirror Man Lyrics 9 years ago
Speculation about who was the titular 'Mirror Man' was ended in 1988 when, during interviews to promote the band's Greatest Hits album, Oakey revealed that it was about Adam Ant. Oakey had become concerned that Ant was starting to believe his own publicity, and was in danger of losing touch with reality. Oakey had avoided revealing this at the time for fear of offending the song's subject.

Joni Mitchell – Otis & Marlena Lyrics 10 years ago
I don't think this open to any range of interpretation. There is a definite theme here, one that often runs through Mitchells work, of societies mediocrity and superficiality. In this piece, I think she is describing a cheap vacation scene. Otis and Marleena, a couple of stereotypical retirees 'enjoying' their opulent Miami holiday. They spend their time playing cards with age freckled hands, taking the view on their 10th floor holiday flat under 'meat red' skies. The whole scene is a cheap pink rose. They spend their soulless self-indulgent time while remaining ignorant of more serious situations, (while Muslims stick up washington) . Basically a song about white trash and the american way.

Empire of the Sun – We Are the People Lyrics 10 years ago
While this song is abstracted out to non-specific nostalgia on the mundane level, the music and certain phrases in the song lift the heartfelt meaning to a much higher existential level, surprising for what is basically a light pop song. What I get out of this song is a celebration/lament of the passing through the great passage of time, beautiful people, billions of us who 'rule the world' in our brief lifespan. For me, this song momentarily strips away the problems and trivialities which blind us to the impossible beauty and improbable fact that we exist right here, right now in an infinite world of unimaginable complexity and that really, we are moving through & out of it without even taking much notice. In my mind, this song is a dedication to all of us, the world and existence.

Placebo – Special Needs Lyrics 11 years ago
I always thought it was about a man in a wheel chair who had a monetary relationship with a very young aspiring actress who would perform sexual services for him in return. He allowed himself to believe that she may have actually cared, but she was only doing it to support her dream of become an actress. He ultimately concedes that she was only in it for the money & asks only from her (possibly only in his mind) that she remembers him when she reaches her goal.

This Mortal Coil – Fond Affections Lyrics 11 years ago
So bleak. To me this song is about death and the ultimate end of everything including 'fond affections'. The end of life will be as the beginning was, "There is no light at the end of it all" as there was nothing before we were born. "There's no light in the beginning"
But what is even more bleak is that when we are in that death bed, when it is being 'forced upon you' we will either be very old or very sick, or both and that person next to us, waiting for us to die, will probably be either repulsed by our decrepit age or will be as old & cold as ourselves (Now it's just that person by your side remaining distant). In any case, even our loving partners love will cool (I can tell by your face that your heart is getting colder).

Basically, there is nothing to look forward to. Let's all sit down and cry. It's bleak, awful, but honest & a brilliant translation of the music.

The Cure – All Cats Are Grey Lyrics 11 years ago
This is most certainly about death, as is most of the album and as was the Last song on their previous album & the First on their next. A lot of imagery is shared with tracks on the Pornography album. This is not simply about 'death'. It is at the Pinnacle of Smiths poetic. What he writes about is the inexpressible, incomprehensible idea of nothingness, and fornever-ness, for even 'nothing' does not come to describe the infinite. So in order to describe this he uses metaphors; "A single note rings on and on and on" in the death cell. The everlasting hopelessness of a single note ringing quietly without pause, like tinnitus, forever, is only an effort to impart what we as 'existing' can never experience, even in death. "No shapes sail on the dark deep lakes" is a mechanism to describe the negative of the void. "No flags wave me home" is the final acceptance that there is no afterlife, heavenly or otherwise. "I never thought that I would find myself in bed amongst the stones"; In our timeless existence, as days come and go, and come again, it is difficult to believe it will move to oblivion once again, as it had been before birth. "In the caves all cats are grey" is describing all our common deaths.
This certainly in no way about life or experience.
