Dir En Grey – Mazohyst Of Decadence Lyrics 16 years ago
It's not written "as if from" an unborn child's pov - it IS written from an unborn child's pov. The child in the song is deformed so his mother decides to abort him. He (the child) keeps singing about how he just wants to be born into a world where he will be loved and cared for despite the fact that he won't come out perfect, but if he can't have a mother who will feel that way about him it would just be better if he dies now.

Other than that this song is f'ing epic - I love the use of more traditional asian instruments added to it and the conversation between the abortion doctor and the mother has such a wonderful sensual sound to it.

Katy Perry – I Kissed a Girl Lyrics 17 years ago
Ugh god this song is so offensive to WOMEN in general. I hate the line about how she hopes he boyfriend "doesn't mind it", it just reminds me of every drunk girl on girl action you see where the girls are kind of like "oops! tee hee!!!!" where you know they're just doing it to be cute. I mean, cuz you know, women kissing women for anything other than drunken experimentation certainly doesn't happen amirite? It's like she's using the same stupid arhument that the "stripping for fitness" classes use of "OMG FEM EMPOWERMENT AND HOW DARE U!!!!" when really all that's going on here is air brained slutness and "omg I hope all the guys will look and obviously I'm too cool and drunk to ever admit to doing it just to get attention".

I Wish Katy would get a clue and just fuck off.

Bat for Lashes – Prescilla Lyrics 17 years ago
I know this is probably going waaaay off target here but I always thought there might be some significance in the names themselves. Priscilla means "old ways" and Karen means "untouched" so I always interpreted it as the same woman speaking about herself in two forms somehow making a plea to fate or old habits to release the "Karen" part of herself from the "Priscilla" part. "She's not your queen anymore, queen of the highway", meaning that somehow she had found a reason to "want to start" and has to rebirth herself in a new form (from her "old ways" to a form that was "pure") to make that way happen and is arguing with herself about it.

Oingo Boingo – No One Lives Forever Lyrics 17 years ago
"So have a toast, and down the cup
And drink to bones that turn to dust"

Oingo seldom gets the credit it deserves, but those few lines are absolutely gorgeous - the pure sense of whimsy and wonder at the act of both living and dying being conveyed is very, very powerful.

The Cure – If Only Tonight We Could Sleep Lyrics 17 years ago
I think there's nothing to support the theory that this song is about wanting to die with someone and movitz's and bloodflowers' theories on the subject are just being overly emo. In fact if you actually *read* the lyrics you'll see that Robert specifically says a lot of stuff that's just the *opposite* such as the words "a DEATHLESS spell" or in the lines "slide into deep black waters" which would imply drowning under normal circumstances, however he adds the lines "and breathe . . . and breathe". Honestly this song is filled with nothing more but some of the most beautiful analogies for sleep and nothing more.

I always picture this song as two lovers spending the night with each other and no wanting to go to sleep and have to wake p in the morning and leave each others sides again.

Switchblade Symphony – Gutter Glitter Lyrics 18 years ago
Ok, I've been doing a lot of thinking about this song and I think I've finally come up with an interpretation that I can live with :

Obviously the central theme the song is written around is the children's rhyme London Bridge Is Falling Down. Now the "my fair lady" actually refers to a Queen or Duchess of the time however I once read that some historians were speculating that it could have been a reference to a very old English tradition of burying a dead virgin where ever a bridge was being built to ensure its steadfastness and I think this is what the lyrics are playing on.

I mean you could technically burry any child at a place to insure your bridge will stand since they're most certainly virgins but for the sake of the song its more fun to imagine a virgin sacrifice instead - the "my fair lady". Also if you want to take it further and say that the duchess involved with its building and ordering of its construction is the one they're talking about sacrificing it would make sense since before the construction of the bridge taxed heavily on the well being of many a family at time. Or you could have a woman who was going to be sacrificed and was afforded a bit of luxury until her time was up.

Gwen Stefani – Harajuku Girls Lyrics 18 years ago
Guys I'm sorry but this song is utter crap. The Harajuku personified in the song is the Takeshita doori version that's put on for tourists who are wandering aimlessly around wanting to see all the "crazy" fashions while in reality Harajuku has some of the least creative fashions I've ever seen anywhere in Tokyo. Most of the people who go to the "main section" of Harajuku these days are middle schoolers and tourists - not exactly the height of fashion creativity sources. To add insult to injury most of the people teh song seems to be targeting here in America who were wearing these brands long before the song came out (Westwood, BTSSB, Moitie, Hysteric Glamour etc) find the song incredibly off putting. If I had a nickel for every time someone used the words "Harajuku Girl" as an insult in one of the advanced comms when a noob comes along I'd be rich. Personally if I want to see some original street/subculture fashion I head to Shinjuku-ku or Ura-hara, anywhere that's not Takeshita-door which is more or less just somewhere to pass through on your way to better shops (such as Laforet or Closet Child).

Rasputina – 1816, The Year Without A Summer Lyrics 18 years ago
As with the rest of the songs on Oh Perilous World the songs are all directly taken from head lines. 1816 actually didn't have a summer - check it out on your own by googling it. The particles of ash from Mt Tambora caused huge fluctuations in the weather that year ~ Vermont and Maine lucked out and only had snow in June, the rest of the midwest had snow all the way through August and the southern states got bizarre cycles of hailstorms which completely decimated crops - it was even reported to drop to 30 something degrees in Georgia one night.

Crazy stuff - my heart aches when I think of what the poor farmers must have gone through. :(

The melody in this song is absolutely mesmerizing - gritty and catching. I think its one of the best songs on the album.

Rasputina – My Captivity by Savages Lyrics 18 years ago
It's not a fantasy - as with many of Rasputina's songs this is influenced by actual events. It wasn't unheard of for war parties to go in and kill families and take the daughters into their tribes to be raised as one of their own. The girls were generally expected to learn the customs and marry Indian men and become mothers. There are even a few very isolated incidents of the women choosing to stay with the tribes they were taken into.

Other than that I think our narraitor has a very high opinion of herself. :P Overall this song just made me giggle.

Rasputina – Oh Injury Lyrics 18 years ago
Although many of the songs obviously support Rasputina's research of old southern custom's and songs I think no other song on the album reflects the desperation and hardships that the poorer classes faced. The song is about poor workers - either in factories, railways, mines etc who would suffer from horrendous injuries.

"He got hurt by the blast.
Oh woe is he, unable to see
In front of his face."

Many times if you were very ill or in pain you had to get up and go to work anyway. Back then if you got hurt that was it - your time was up since there wasn't any health care and the bosses sure as hell didn't care what happened. You can see this reflected in the lines

"One kind of fold, they don't know it's broke.
The others don't care.
They just sit and complain about imagined pain.
About an uncle who fell down the stairs."

The rich are in a different class than the workers. They live a life comfortable enough that they can afford to obsess over little things in their health. To make matters worse around the time many of the songs Rasputina researched a lot of workers were getting replaced by machinery. This was really a hard time for a lot of people.
