| The Cranberries – Zombie Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| Whilst generally the song is a protest song against the violence in N.I. , it was inspired (if that is the right word for such a despicable act) by the Warrington bombings in 93. The Cranberries were on tour at the time. Two innocent children died in the attack and that moved them to write the song. | |
| Spandau Ballet – True Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| The song is indeed about unrequited love, and was confirmed as such by Gary Kemp who wrote it. | |
| Crowded House – Fall At Your Feet Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
The song is about unrequited love. The man is in love with a woman, possibly a close female friend. When she is down, she turns to him. He is upset that she is upset, but at the sametime he enjoys the fact that she opens up to him when she is upset. Maybe he even encourages her to be upset (touches her slow turning pain)so that he can take advantage of it or to keep her around. But when she no longer requires his support, she walks away. Bottom line is, he wants her. She doesn't want him and only comes around when she needs comforting. |

| OneRepublic – Stop and Stare Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
I think it's about someone contemplating suicide, because some tragedy has befallen them and they are struggling to cope. From the lyrics the most potent image I get is that maybe the person is standing on the edge of somewhere waiting to jump.... "This town is colder now, I think it's sick of us It's time to make a move, I'm shaking off the rust I've got my heart set on anywhere but here I'm staring down myself, counting up the years" There are too many bad memories where he lives. Town could even be a metaphor for life. He is on the verge of committing suicide and he is looking at himself (maybe in a mirror, or maybe it's another metaphor for his life) and thinking back through his life. "Steady hands, just take the wheel And every glance is killing me Time to make one last appeal For the life I lead" Is he driving to where he intends to kill himself, or does he tend to drive off the edge of a cliff? Either way he is trying to convince himself not to pull out of his decision, as he is struggling to go on but at the sametime he is looking for one last reason to live. "Stop and stare I think I'm moving but I go nowhere Yeah, I know that everyone gets scared But I've become what I can't be, ohhh Stop and stare You start to wonder why you're here, not there And you'd give anything to get what's fair But fair ain't what you really need Oh, can you see what I see" He feels trapped and no matter what he does he can't move on from the psychological trauma that has gripped him. He is reaching out, crying for help but everyone just seems to be standing by and not helping. He is self destructing and no one seems to care. He is becoming bitter, possibly even twisted and he can feel himself descending into becoming a person that he hates. "They're trying to come back, all my senses push Untie the weight bags, I never thought I could Steady feet, don't fail me now I'm a-run till you can't walk But something pulls my focus out And I'm standing down" He is on the verge of killing himself and he ALMOST does it and then something happens that makes him change his mind at the very last minute. This conclusion may be completely wrong and it could not be suicide but just someone who needs to escape from his hometown, because of bad memories, but looking at the video death definitely appears to be a common theme and him walking in front of the car, or the empty shallow grave (that could signify either his pregnant loved one dying there or him ready to take to his own grave) would definitely suggest to me there is more to this song than just love. Also he is wearing a black hood (death?). I just think the imagery in the lyrics and from the video suggest someone struggling with the will to live. Thoughts? |

| The Police – Synchronicity II Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| I think people are getting too hung up on the environmental side of the song. This was written in 1983, before the real fuss about the environment began. The synchronicity is definitely the anger rising within the father as his crappy mundane life gets to him. The monster is rising from the lake at the sametime. The real giveaway is the last verse for both where the fathers home is looming in the headlights and the monster is at the door of the cottage. | |
| Amy Macdonald – Footballer's Wife Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| Brilliant song and sums up exactly how I feel about the two girls the song is about. Chanelle from Big Brother and Coleen, Wayne Rooney's girlfriend. I totally agree with Amy, both act like big stars and are almost completely devoid of any redeeming talents. | |
| Amy Macdonald – Youth Of Today Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| Great song with very interesting viewpoint lyrics. Ironically in one song Amy MacDonald actually points out one of the major flaws of the youth of today. "Don't care what you have to say at all. ". The biggest problem with modern youth, at least in the UK, is that they do exactly what they want and don't care about any of the consequences. | |
| Jewel – Hands Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| The whole Spirit album is loosely based around God. She'll never be broke because she has God on her side, and no matter what befalls she will pray... | |
| Supertramp – Bloody Well Right Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Follow up song to "School" on the album. School is about a boy at School. Bloody Well Right, the kid has left school and now finding that the things he was told at school weren't necessarily accurate and he is finding it tough in the "real" world. So much so he ends up withdrawing more and more into himself (Hide in your Shell) and going a bit mad (Asylum, Dreamer). | |
| Supertramp – Goodbye Stranger Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
He may have picked the name for its "weed" connections, but the song itself is not about weed. It's the "sequel" song, and Supertramp have many, to Lover Boy on EITQM. |
|
| Supertramp – Asylum Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| The character is going mad. It's difficult to say what brings on the state, but the previous song on the album gives some pretty strong clues. | |
| Supertramp – Dreamer Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| I've heard the song is about a schizo, but I personally believe it fits in with the rest of the album and ties in nicely with Hide in your Shell and Asylum. The main character is becoming withdrawn and "hiding" in his shell. In Asylum he is beginning to lose his sanity. By the time Dreamer comes around the previous two songs have formed this man. The way he deals with his troubles is to "dream"....a theme touched on later in their career with From Now On | |
| Supertramp – If Everyone Was Listening Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| I think the whole album is loosely based around the life of one man living (and wasting) his life. I believe this song is about that man dying. His life is coming to an end, and he knows it and he is scared. | |
| Supertramp – School Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
The song is the perfect start to the concept album that is Crime of the Century. There is a theme that runs though the album, and it starts off with someone (possibly Rudy) in his younger years, and just starting to question life. There is actually a school of thought (no pun intended) that the whole album was about insanity, and schizophrenia. Dreamer is certainly about that, but it could well be a man wrestling with his own alter ego's. Personally I think it is a concept album that, through the life of one man, shows how volatile human emotions are. And the Crime of the Century? Well I believe it's a theme that Supertramp revisited a few times later. The crime is about people wasting their lives by doing nothing. It's the end of the story (If Everyone Was Listening I believe is about the main characters life drawing to a close) in a very fitting way. Great album regardless! |

| Supertramp – Child of Vision Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Child of "Vision", basically means the television generation. It's how people don't live their lives as much anymore, and spend time in front of the gogglebox. | |
| Genesis – Silver Rainbow Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Yes, the song is about sex. And the silver rainbow is a zipper. | |
| Genesis – Just A Job To Do Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| I remember reading somewhere that the song is actually about a hitman for hire. | |
| Genesis – Home By The Sea Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| That should read "All of this happens" not and of this happens! | |
| Genesis – Home By The Sea Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
The song is indeed about a haunted house, and anyone who has gone to a Genesis concert in recent years will testify to that. Collins does the routine of contacting spirits in the other world with the crowd, and in LA 1984 he had this to say just after doing that, and prior to the song "Now that we have made contact with...the OTHER WORLD, we're going play for you a song about GHOSTS and things that go BUMP in the night. And of this happens *manic laugh* in a home BY THE SEA!" then the song starts. |
|
| Sting – A Thousand Years Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| The song is about two lovers through the ages who live, die and then get reincarted but no matter how often it happens their newly reincarted form always ends up with the other. | |
| Sting – Bring on the Night Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Bring on the Night is actually an older Police song, that Sting did live after he left The Police. The song is about the execution of Gary Gilmore. | |
| Genesis – Tonight, Tonight, Tonight Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| The song is about drugs. An addict is desperate for his fix, but can't get hold of his dealer. Simple as that really! | |
| Genesis – Domino Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| The song was wrote during the Cold War and is actually about the aftermath of a Nuclear war. The man's love has been killed during the conflict, and he himself is dying from radiation poisoning. | |
| The Police – Wrapped Around Your Finger Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I'll do the breakdown too. "You consider me the young apprentice Caught between the Scylla and Charibdes Hypnotized by you if I should linger Staring at the ring around your finger" He is falling for this married woman, who is seducing him. He thinks she see's him as some sort of plaything. He is caught in two minds about what to do, he is very interested but the wedding ring is there to constantly remind him that she is married woman and what he is doing is wrong. "I have only come here seeking knowledge Things they would not teach me of in college I can see the destiny you sold Turn into a shining band of gold" As already stated he is fixated by her wedding ring (band of gold). It's a common topic at colleges that "older women" are better in bed. The young man is there to experience this. "I'll be wrapped around your finger I'll be wrapped around your finger" He knows if he goes there and succumbs she will have a power of his lust/love. "Mephistopheles is not your name I know what you're up to just the same I will listen hard to your tuition You will see it come to it's fruition" The first line could mean two things. a) he knows she is not a bad person but, etc or b) he knows exactly what her motives are. The last two lines relate back to sex again, he is there to learn about sex from an older woman. "Devil and the deep blue sea behind me Vanish in the air you'll never find me I will turn your face to alabaster When you find your servant is your master" At first he is enthralled by her but as time goes on he will lose interest and at that stage the tables will turn. |
|
| The Police – Wrapped Around Your Finger Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| The song IS about a married woman and Sting confirmed this. It was inspired by The Graduate. The young college student has an affair with an older married woman. At first she has him under her spell, but as the relationship goes on the power switches to him. | |
