Jerry Cantrell – Jesus Hands Lyrics 17 years ago
I'm not sure this song is so much about Jesus as it's more about spiritual guidance. Jesus seems like he's being used as a possible example of spiritual guidance, but I don't Cantrell is really dedicating the song specifically to Him.

Iron Maiden – For the Greater Good of God Lyrics 17 years ago
Steve Harris, in that same interview, also said that with this song he wanted to emphasize the fact that (whether you believe in him or not) God is an important part of everybody's life. The lyrics for this song actually sound a bit agnostic as Bruce appears to be searching for the true meaning of life, but without a pre-conceived belief system.

Bad Religion – Atheist Peace Lyrics 17 years ago
In response to Agnostic Soldier, I think you're grossly oversimplifying things. Wars are started generally for two things: Money and Power. Because religion is such a powerful tool, it usually somehow makes its way into war since, when one group of people wants power over another group, they also want to make sure that group follows their particular religion. Cutting religion out altogether does not make people any less starved for wealth and power. It just denies them a potential cover-up for their motivations.

Bad Religion – Atheist Peace Lyrics 17 years ago
I do, however, agree that there's a disappointing amount of ignorance on Songmeanings.net over how the Christian religion actually works. I'm sorry, but just as there are plenty of hypocritical pastors/priests out there, there are also many hypocritical/fraudulant atheists out there too. Just as a Christian can't blindly follow what a pastor preaches, an atheist shouldn't blindly follow what people like Richard Dawkins say either.

Bad Religion – Atheist Peace Lyrics 17 years ago
"What is described as 'strong atheism' should really be call non-theism."

Actually, that's not entirely true. Atheism is a subset of non-theism. But so are agnosticism and deism. Non-theism simply means you don't follow any particular religion. It doesn't necessarily mean you don't believe in God.

Demons and Wizards – Spatial Architects Lyrics 17 years ago
Was it actually Hansi who wrote these lyrics? Because they sound very Deistic (Hansi's a Christian, btw), and Schaffer IIRC is a Deist.

System of a Down – Suite-Pee Lyrics 17 years ago
To elaborate, Tankian once said in an interview that he believes all organized religions are False. However, he said afterwards that when asked whether or not he believes in God, he tells whoever asked to go outside and notice how everything moves in nature. His message is that "everything has a beginning." If you put the two together, it sounds to me like he's a Deist. Plain and simple.

System of a Down – Suite-Pee Lyrics 17 years ago
I think a lot of people are reading into this song too much. It's the first song off SOAD's first album. It sounds to me like it's really just supposed to be a shock-song so that the band could get the attention of the metal community.

As for SOAD being anti-religious, I think Serj Tankian is a Deist. I don't know about the other bandmembers, though.

Queen – All God's People Lyrics 18 years ago
Agreed wholeheartedly. I think that, ultimately, Freddie was pleading for acceptance despite his sexual orientation. With this song, he was basically saying, "Instead of trying to use God as justification to discriminate against people (not necessarily just homosexuals, but also Jews, Blacks, etc), let's all recognize that God has a purpose for us all (regardless of our differences) and fulfill it by loving and respecting one another. And living out the amazing life he's given us."

Anthrax – Hy Pro Glo Lyrics 18 years ago
I'll take a wild guess and assume that the "junk food" he's referring to is relationship that you know you should get out of, but somehow keep coming back to. Kind of like how junk food is something we all know we shouldn't be eating, but we keep craving and eating it anyway.

Queens of the Stone Age – I Never Came Lyrics 18 years ago
To me, this song is about a very lopsided relationship, told from the point of view of the guy. The girl is mistreating and abusing the guy. She's totally wrong for him. And the guy is essentially trying to get out of his relationship with her. The problem? He's sexually attracted to her. So, even though he's breaking off his relationship with her, he can't shake his attraction to her. It sounds like, at the end, he finally gets some closure on the relationship. Confessing (both to her and to himself) that his relationship with her was all about lust, and had no personal meaning.

Lamb of God – Walk with Me in Hell Lyrics 18 years ago
When Randy says, "Pray for this, pray for that." I don't think he's really sying it in a mean or condescending way. I think he's simply refering to common people following faith, and then they have to be assaulted by extremists like those who kicked LOG out of their venu for their old bandname.

Lamb of God – Walk with Me in Hell Lyrics 18 years ago
I think the song is LOG's response to the way they were kicked out of that tour venue three years ago because their old bandname. It's essentially a metaphor for the band touring. "Walk with me in hell" being "Come and see our shows, regardless of what fundamentalist Christians may say about our music." Meanwhile, the "liars" they refer to are probably the club that kicked them out, and how a lot of people (the "believers") will use that to justify LOG being an "evil band you shouldn't listen to."

Randy Blythe himself said in late-2005 that, aside from this one incident, he doesn't have anything against religion. So I can't really imagine this song actually attacking religion itself.

System of a Down – Chop Suey! Lyrics 18 years ago
To me, this seems like a song about celebrity suicide. Using a religious metaphor to add dramatic flair. The "put a little make-up" part is a dead give away.

System of a Down – Science (feat. Arto Tunçboyacıyan) Lyrics 18 years ago
Pretty much like everybody else said. People tend to put more faith into Science than they really should, because Science can only go as far as human beings can possibly take it. There's still probably a lot that we are and always will be incapable of reaching. And the song is pointing out that faith in God is something that can never be adequately challenged, no matter how hard some people try.

Certainly, this song suggests that SOAD are definitely not atheists.

Queens of the Stone Age – Leg Of Lamb Lyrics 18 years ago
I'm pretty sure Josh Homme was only kidding about the whole "Cannibalism" bit. Josh Homme always likes to crack these kinds of jokes, both in concert and in his music.

It basically sounds like another QOTSA break-up song. It starts off with the guy and the girl arguing, and the guy pointing out all the girl's faults (for example, she's educated but she likes to brag about it). She finally leaves him, and he doesn't care. He wants to do something to get back at her, even if he's going against his own will. He finds himself flashing back to their relationship, and finally realizes he was an idiot for breaking up with her.

This is what I get out of the song, at least.

Alice in Chains – God Am Lyrics 18 years ago
Agreed with most of the interpretations here. Although, I do think the song has a joint meaning. The verses are, as one poster here pointed out, like a disappointed prayer. Where he's basically feeling like, no matter how hard he tries, things keep getting worse and worse for him. And he's questioning why, if God's an all-loving God, he seems to have no problem letting things continue the way they do for Layne.

The second meaning is in the chorus. Where he's questioning whether it's really possible for human beings to be perfect, as God is. I think "Can I be as my God Am"? is really meant more to be a rhetorical question. As in, "Is it really possible for me to be perfect as God is"? It seems to tie into the verses as a sort of plea for forgiveness. Layne's basically saying, "God, I know I've made some mistakes in my life. But no human being is perfect. Can't you still forgive me?"

Beautiful song.

Queens of the Stone Age – Another Love Song Lyrics 18 years ago
A woman he was with was mistreating him and abusing him. And so finally, Nick's breaking up with her. Pretty self explainatory.

I love the irony in that it's called "Another Love Song." Making fun of how shallow a lot of love songs are, and then singing about the obligatory break-up/loss in almost every love song.

Queens of the Stone Age – Do It Again Lyrics 18 years ago
A simple love song. There's definitely some obvious sex, here. But I think it's also a live-for-the-moment song. He wants to enjoy the girl he's with as long as possible.

Probably one of the most upbeat and fun QOTSA songs ever written.

Queens of the Stone Age – Little Sister Lyrics 18 years ago
By the way, Josh Homme once mentioned that he often tries to write song lyrics in such a way that you can interpret them however you like. So there probably isn't really any "wrong interpretation" of this song. It just takes a topic (love), puts a unique twist on it, and expects the listener to decide for himself what he gets out of it.

Queens of the Stone Age – Little Sister Lyrics 18 years ago
I think it's about being in love with a really shy girl. The pet name "Little Sister" seems to mean that the girl he likes is acting like a little girl (being so shy and timid), but he's actually quite charmed by it. So he calls her "Little Sister" out of affection.

Anthrax – Blood Lyrics 18 years ago
It's basically about human nature, and how it's naturally selfish. Pointing out that, even when we know what's right and what's wrong, it's sometimes difficult to do the right thing when the wrong thing seems easier and more "pleasurable."

Monster Magnet – See You In Hell Lyrics 18 years ago
To sum up what everybody's said, I think this song is about a poor, down-and-out couple living in a ramshackle studio apartment in the big city (possibly New York City). It's being told from the wife's point of view (assuming they're married - they may not be). Her husband's a failed punk rocker with a serious drug addiction, so they have almost no money. Neither of them is well educated. The husband went so far as to sacrifice their child so that they could survive. And so, finally, the wife decides it's time for them to split up (with the baby sacrifice being the final straw). It's like an ode to stereotypical white trash, if you will.

Queens of the Stone Age – God Is In The Radio Lyrics 18 years ago
Superficially, it could be about the frequent religious broadcasts on AM radio every Sunday Morning. Not only does the song's intro demonstrate this, but it basically consists almost exclusively of stereotypical Southern Preacher-type broadcasts and church songs. Although, going a little deeper, it could be a metaphor for the control the media seems to have over what goes on the radio (they're basically "God", choosing only to play the songs and bands they consider appropriate, and there's nothing we can do about it because our communication with these people is ultimately limited to what we hear on the radio). It could even be Queens Of The Stone Age venting a little over the fact that, at the time, they were probably getting less radio play than they would've liked.

But I also believe the song's intended to create a strong image in your mind. An image of a higher spiritual being (God) slowly tuning a giant shortwave radio. Hence its haunting-yet-grandiose sound. It's really a song that's probably more meant to be experienced than analyzed.

Garbage – As Heaven Is Wide Lyrics 18 years ago
Believe it or not, I think this song is about Shirley's misadventures with her parents (specifically, her father) as a child. She came from a very religious household, and she had a lot of issues with them as a child. Finally, at age 12, she blew up at them and renounced her religion. She made peace with them eventually (not really sure when), but she was really bitter about religion for a while. I think this is basically an autobiographical song about this whole experience.

TestAmenT – Hail Mary Lyrics 18 years ago
Sounds like it's about somebody on his death bed, who's looking back on his life and regretting a lot of his mistakes. Now, in his darkest hour, he's basically praying for one last chance at redemption before his death. The Catholic reference suggests that this song could indirectly be about a real life person Chuck or whoever wrote this song knew (ie. a Catholic who went through what the speaker in the song is going through).

Nevermore – Believe In Nothing Lyrics 18 years ago
As far as I know, Warrel Dane never said he was an atheist. And the idea of Nevermore being a "very atheistic" band sounds to me like it's just hopeful/wishful thinking on the part of some metal fans (which, if you think about it, is ridiculous).

Judging from interviews and this song in particular (which, to me, sounds indirectly religious - despite not directly mentioning God), it sounds like Warrel Dane's an agnostic but leans more towards atheism than theism (similarly, the bandmembers in Kamelot strike me as agnostics who lean more towards theism). In this song, he's proclaiming that right now he has a difficult time believing in God. But he also knows that he could be wrong about his disbelief, and he's not flat-out rejecting God either. Despite being a devout Catholic, I can empathize with and understand what he's saying (even though I don't agree with it). It's a song of wonder, curiosity, and questioning. Not an anthem or declaration of belief.

In a way, Nevermore is like a heavy metal version of Bad Religion. They intellectually QUESTION theism, but they don't flat-out reject or preach against it.

Slayer – Seven Faces Lyrics 18 years ago
One thing people need to realize when interpreting song lyrics is that the lyrics alone often don't entirely define a song's meaning. The actual tone of the music often mixes with the lyrics to paint a pretty solid image in your mind of what the song is about. Seven Faces has a very gloomy/depressive tone, suggesting (at least to me) the the song isn't quite so rosey and optimistic as "Do whatever you want and you'll be free!"

Bad Religion – Sorrow Lyrics 18 years ago
Greg claims to be an Atheist, but he often acknowledges the fact that he may be wrong about his disbelief in God. So whether he's really an "atheist" or more of an "agnostic" is debatable. He QUESTIONS religion and religious belief, but he doesn't attack them. He's not an anti-theist (somebody who's against religion and belief in God), and when his music does attack something in regards to religion, it usually attacks the practices of certain religious people. Rather than faith in God itself.

TestAmenT – So Many Lies Lyrics 18 years ago
The Southern Preacher sample towards the end pretty much says it all. It's about these self-proclaimed "messiahs" who say that you will go to Heaven if you give them a certain sum of money. And then they just use that money for their own pleasure.

The Ritual is a vastly underrated album.

Slayer – Seven Faces Lyrics 18 years ago
I'll be the first to not completely agree with Darkspot. While the song certainly isn't punishing the desire to commit the seven deadly sins (and it's describing them in a very human manner), I don't think it's really supporting the desire either. It sounds to me like it's being sung/spoken from the point of view of a depressed, hurt and failed individual (possibly a drug addict) who's basically looking for serenity in things like lust and greed. Basically, he's trying to escape from reality through them. The song isn't punishing him, but it certainly isn't suggesting that he be a role model either.

Queen – All God's People Lyrics 18 years ago
And in response to Decapsuleur, you're wrong. Freddie's AIDS sentence really gave him all the more reason to become religious. He was obviously thinking a lot about what would happen when he died. Where he would go, etc. And I think he really wanted to make ammends with the world and be the best person he could be before death. Particularly as a child, he was actually a very religious person (not a Christian, but a Zoroastrian).

Queen – Bicycle Race Lyrics 18 years ago
I can't believe that even THIS song is interpreted as something really sick/perverted like Anal Sex. When, clearly, it's just about having a good time. Freddie wrote this song as he watched the Tour De France pass his hotel. And so, for fun, he decided to write a song about bike riding. It's not supposed to have some deep metaphor or meaning. It's just supposed to be an all-around fun and goofy song.

Again, topics like Anal Sex and Drug Use were still very risky back in 1978. It's amazing how a lot of young people seem to think we've always had things like South Park and Grand Theft Auto. WE DIDN'T!!!

Queen – Don't Stop Me Now Lyrics 18 years ago
Something that I think must be brought up is that some of you are looking at this song from too modern a perspective. Back when it came out in 1978, topics like drugs and sex were still quite risky in rock music. If a musician blatantly sang about such topics, he/she would've garnered immediate controversy. Which Queen never did (outside of Freddie's non-musical life). Of course, today such topics are perfectly common and accepted in rock music. But back about 30 years ago, they weren't so much. So I honestly think all these interpretations about it being about "drugs" and "gay sex" (did Freddie even realize his homosexuality at the time? - I think around the time that song was written, he was actually in a relationship with some woman, whom he broke up with shortly after) are way off.

Queen – Don't Stop Me Now Lyrics 18 years ago
It should be pretty obvious that this is simply a fun party song. Not just in terms of the lyrics, but also in terms of the music itself. Very fast paced and upbeat, with a very "fun" sound. And you can tell Freddie's having a blast playing the piano. May be there are some sexual allusions, but they could also simply mean "hooking up at the party."

I don't know about the rest of you guys, but this particular song sort of reminds me of Billy Joel's music. Freddie's singing style, the liberal use of the piano (the only real guitaring here are Brian May's solo and a couple extra guitar bits here or there),

One of my favorite Queen tunes.

TestAmenT – Sewn Shut Eyes Lyrics 18 years ago
It's basically about how, no matter how much we try to love one another, everybody also has a natural tendency to be angry. But we often keep it repressed, so we're generally blind to the hidden angers of other people (hence, "Sewn Shut Eyes" = "Blind to the anger and hatred going on in the world").

The CD booklet shows a beautiful woman sleeping with her eyes sewn shut. Perhaps suggesting naivity.

TestAmenT – Down For Life Lyrics 18 years ago
Angiaz is right, but I think the song is also suggesting to avoid making it a co-dependent relationship. The "I can't help my friend help himself" line suggests that, even though Chuck will help his friend best he can, it's ultimately up to his friend to respond to his help.

No, Testament's not really anti-Christian. They're against some of what goes on in the Church, but not really against the Christian faith. Actually, Testament is probably more moralistic than a lot of other thrash bands.
