Ryan Adams – Crossed Out Name Lyrics 15 years ago
@drudo182 when he first "leaked" it via sock puppets on youtube, this tune completely reminded me of a Whiskeytown song (rough cut, acoustic only, just him, still working with it) ...and two years later, it holds up as every thing this man writes does. amazing song.

Pete Yorn – Long Time Nothing New Lyrics 16 years ago
This is an AMAZING song. It's pretty straight forward- Pete has talked about the song being inspired by always wanting to get out of the small NJ town he grew up in, and then realizing years later what was inherently good about it- or what he could see of value in it- now that he's spent that time in L.A.,and tramped all over the U.S.

for me, this song touches me right now in my life in a big way...and I think it rings true for so many. The economy's in the tank, we're all STUCK- we fantasize of "breaking out" of the same old town, the life, the circumstances we find ourselves in...unemployed, in a job we hate, strapped under a mortgage on a property now worth "half" it's previously over-inflated value.
It speaks to the wanderer in us all, lusting for the next best place over the horizon...
"it burns on in your mind"

truly stunning in its simplicity and beauty. Yorn is at the top of his game- a great songwriter. good to see more people discovering him.

He's shy, introverted and pouring his soul all over the floor for you...buy his music.

Pete Yorn – Country Lyrics 16 years ago
Just beautifully composed...the hook is addictive. Pete is truly hitting his stride as a songwriter- and the time in Omaha is showing on the composition and construction of recordings. Caught him three nights ago live- and he and his band are just SOLID!
if you can see him live- you'd better hurry. don't think he'll be on these smaller, more intimate settings tour next year.

Better Than Ezra – Juarez Lyrics 16 years ago
4 in the a.m. is the perfect analogy for this tune; haunting, half awake...lyrically, it also beautifully captures the rhythm and tone of life on the road for a band. the fact that kevin griffin used "busking" , and rhymed his way through the map, demonstrates his song writing skill, and his homage to the greats like McCartney, Dylan and Petty. The band perfectly weighs in (musically responds?), on the track. Seriously, a top ten track by this band.

Pete Yorn – For Us Lyrics 16 years ago
Funny how everyone maps it to be Pete singing to a woman, or someone he was sexually involved with...i always took it more in a male communication way. As in, a friend, buddy, someone he cared for- who is bogged down, lost, all fucked up (not necessarily addiction issues, but definitely using something to numb out). Perhaps someone else in his circle of friends from a similar background, or just experiencing new found "celebrity" in whatever dose or way. Someone struggling with the issues of identity that the false idolatry and worship of celebritydom brings about...but, that is just my take on it, sitting here listening to the album again. Can't wait for Back & Fourth release! YES

Pablo – This Will Be Our Year (The Zombies Cover) Lyrics 18 years ago
Couldn't say it any better than boringbriana did...as far as what this song means to me...currently it is an everything anthem, and a reminder to smile, be very THANKFUL for a new romance, and a man who maps to the lyrics, EXACTLY. it reminds me, life is a lot of things, and often difficult, but without love, it is meaningless. and, yeah, it was all a long time coming. but without that part, you never would appreciate the positive when it shows up. Thanks Paul and band for covering this song. It holds up well over time, and now an entire new generation will know it (caveat: i never heard the original by the zombies! haha) :o)

Pablo – Half The Time Lyrics 18 years ago
Can't believe no one's commented on this song! (can't believe I always write that)
I really dig this song. Even if I can't profess to understand the "meaning", it means a lot to me- viscerally and musically.
The gut-wrenching vocals, the rhythmic call and response of the song.
I so love this:
"I'm gonna wait all night
just to fall in line
knowing that nothing's gonna change"
indeed. When you already KNOW all you need to know...but you're not through the grinding. processing loss. despondency. feeling all alone.
this song works. because
it haunts.

Trevor Hall – The Lime Tree Lyrics 18 years ago
Can't believe no one has commented on this song! brilliant. beautiful. enchanting. As far as what Trevor means...
hmm. I take it, all of it, music and lyrics, as such a testament to the beauty of the relationships that make up our lives, enhance it and shape it. The love in those moments and connections. How it is the only thing that lasts, that sustains us, and carries us through loss. Rising above a dark time when (perhaps?) the temptation to get numb led you to imbibe maybe more than you know you should be...but still you needed it. you were hiding. but, still wherever that love "found you" - sought you out- you were saved by it. and, even when you still sip a bit of wine, you remember that in your darkest times, it was this love that came through. I adore the imagery in this song. he's a wonderful, talented musician (how do these humans on the planet for such a short time come to such enlightened, wise conclusions so quickly?) Amazing.

Pete Yorn – All At Once Lyrics 18 years ago
There's an article online somewhere that addresses this, and I would presume, what Pete felt like revealing about it. i think it is EXTREMELY personal for him, it is about his grandfather, and it is about looking back with the wisdom of an adult and seeing how "off" you were in your impression of a person as a little kid - he understands now how wrong he was, but with kindness and forgiveness to the little boy- I was too young to understand.

if you read that interview, you'll see the full story...he has great, incredible admiration for his grandfather. He was the youngest in the family... the youngest is always "protected" and left out of so much in a family dynamic, by folks who mean well. His grandfather is an immigrant to this country who BUSTED his ass to make a better life for his son, put him through dental school, etc. I think it is probably so very much more than we could ever know. i am impressed he was willing to share so much on something so personal. Perhaps it is a tribute too to his grandfather. The music is beautiful.

Pete Yorn – Closet Lyrics 18 years ago
My take was, it's definitely an obsessive nut job, a man, who was beaten as a child (and clearly, very scarred)
He met a woman named Bilie (i have a woman friend of the same name and spelling- so I immediately mapped that right over! lol).
Perhaps she shared that she was beaten as a child. Perhaps he just stalked a 12 step group for survivors of abuse.

But he's sick, inappropriate and waaaay over obsessing about her.
and now he has "lost control"- he's broken in to her home, wanted to be near her, even literally walking around her closet - hell, he's so creepy he's definitely been through the undies drawer!

Actually, with the above construct, the "walking around your closet" is even better fit for a metaphoric construct. Dude's so far gone, he's sure to be presuming he just KNOWS the object of his obsession so well, he can mentally walk through all her hidden secrets...
or, wait, is that just another aspect of his overblown imagination?
The don't stop, don't turn around is just even more of the stalking behavior (be spotted would blow his cover and his twisted fantasy).

in short: NO boundaries!

It is so well written and constructed: it's anxiety inducing to read, while blissfully just rocks out, played very loudly in the car!

HA! :o)

oh yeah- last thought, if the name was spelled Billy, I would equally change all the pronouns around, including same sex construct(s)- that says a lot about how well Yorn writes dark lyrics, and tells great tales of the human condition (crazy naked apes!)

Pete Yorn – Shampoo Lyrics 18 years ago
This song means so much to me that I am not even prepared to discuss it out loud yet...

question?
wondered where these lyrics were acquired.

I thought this section was this:
so we rise,
off to make another run of it,
past the time we say goodbye.
here we are enclosed,
wake me up, i'm ready to go,
all the signs said tonight.

Also- I thought it was "trend", not "train" that was passing. LOL. actually, either works well...hmmm.

It's in rotation at Pete's MySpace page (music player)- sure wish he would release it on iTunes (saw someone posted the same desire at the page as well, so maybe...)

anyway- thanks for posting it. I really adore Yorn. His shows are still relatively small- DO catch him in those venues while you can...the way he can construct tunes, he will have something pop BIG soon.

The The – Love Is Stronger Than Death Lyrics 18 years ago
I can't believe no one has commented on this song yet! It is AMAZING. This song is very important to me...I love the hook, and the changes in the music. It soars, and speaks of the eternal optimism of the living, in their struggles with surviving loss, mourning death, and continuing on - just like nature and the Seasons. All returns, the circle continues...I think in some ways it asks us to also consider that while our feelings make sense in light of loss, perhaps we are too caught up in our preciousness, our "uniqueness", our egos finding it incomprehensible that death exists, and just looking at the natural rhythms of the world, we see we are just a part of a larger whole. That existence, consciousness are our concepts- but nature continues on. True to only itself, it's very disposition.

The Jayhawks – Save It For A Rainy Day Lyrics 18 years ago
I always pictured Marina as a woman, living on the street, and the writer taking poetic license weaving a story in his head about her, as he stood at a bus stop. Maybe he met her...maybe they always caught the same bus. The hook also hints at irritation with her...maybe she was off her meds, but still struggling to maintain her dignity, and he felt for her. The hook hit his head, and he built the rest of the song around her.

Short version: it's about the human condition
