Metric – The List Lyrics 18 years ago
I think this song is about the transience of many bands' popularity, or perhaps famous people in general, and Metric's fear of becoming a "has-been." (Maybe?) Like, "The blonde dolls smiling behind us/Say one day you'll be just like us," expressing Emily Haine's fear of becoming just a doll, devoid of emotions or opinions. I think it's also about how superficial and fickle fame is: "All dressed up to catch a glimpse of the list/we've seen some success and it looks like a camaro." I think the part about the haircuts is alluding to "scene" or "emo" bands which she feels are not going to last; they are merely a trend. She reassures herself that she is not a trend, however: "But you and I have been through that and that is not our fate/loyal in your shadow." I think the "you" she is referring to is the bands she's looked up to in the past and respected and idolized.
