| HammerFall – Fury of the Wild Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| To me, especially considering which album this is on, this one is about the duel between Oberyn Martell and Gregor Clegane in A Feast For Crows. Of course, it could be about anyone who wants vengeance, really, but considering the overall theme of the album it reminds me of the Viper vs. The Mountain pretty strongly. | |

Actually, having listened to the other two albums, I'd agree with Yaifrog. I got this one badly wrong. :p Jorn is, essentially, as mentioned, Mephisto. So he's not trying to give Tobi hope, or telling him to stop being miserable, he's actually doing the exact opposite. Telling him that he tried being a nice guy and it didn't work out too well, so now it's surely time to 'take your share', i.e., be a bad guy. Be more like him. |

| Avantasia – Death is Just a Feeling Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
I think this is the ghost basically saying "I'm still happy, and I'm dead! Why are you still so miserable?". He swapped 'finitude' for 'diamonds' (sold his soul for wealth, basically), and now considers himself to be perfectly normal... just a little pale. I think he's saying that he and Tobi's character are very alike (Dead and alive/Come a little closer/You and I/Affiliates forever more), he just happens to be dead. But death is just a feeling. So Tobi should join him (kill himself? Seems a bit harsh for Avantasia :P), and then he won't need to feel or do anything any more: Don't hesitate to sign right here Don't be afraid to come with me (the 'kill yourself' bit, or maybe less literal than that, I don't know) Specialized in temporizing Dead to faulty love and time (Temporising = delaying action, procrastinating, waiting. Basically he's saying that love (especially 'faulty (unrequited?) love') and time have no relevance when you're dead. Which makes it a lot more sinister than most Avantasia songs (except Another Angel Down, where Jorn Lande's character says pretty much the same thing. Although Jorn Lande's character is pretty much Satan, so that's kinda expected. Any thoughts? |

Tobi's character in this album is, to put it lightly, a bit messed in the head. Bad things have happened to him, and he was pretty down. The love of his life barely knows his name, and he only has one real friend to speak of (played by Jorn Lande). This song is all about turning your life around and realising that there is something to live for after all. "I am the master of the game that made a fool of you" That'd be that tricky game called 'love'. "You got the aura to enchant them - and a symphony And I have got the power" I interpret this as Jorn saying "look, you can be a great guy, you're pretty awesome when you're not being such an emo. Let me show you". "You better taste - they call it life: my special area I'm breeding winners over there (yeah)" Jorn, in other words, is having a great time. And by the sound of it, getting lots of 'love practice'. "Ain't it a sin to turn your back On what you re given It's time to take your share" I.e., stop contemplating suicide and get out there and have fun. |

A tribute to Dimebag Darrell. One of the best tribute songs ever, to anyone, imo. Hell, one of the best song ever, tribute or not! |

| Avantasia – The Seven Angels Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
The Seven Angels are the seven main characters in the story; Gabriel, Elderane, Regrin, the Pope, Jakob, Falk and Johann. Armageddon is coming, as the wrath of God reigns down upon them. As judgement day approaches: Gabe notes that he’s done nothing wrong, and is confident he’ll go to heaven. The Pope realizes he’s sinned, and wonders if he’ll go to hell. Johann, like the Pope, asks if he’ll die because they lost the seal. Yes, he’s still worried about that. Jakob begins to wonder if they were supposed to lose the seal. If that was the point. Maybe they did the right thing, and will go to heaven after all? Lugaid tells us throughout that this isn’t the coming of God. If only they knew that… The Voice (presumably God) then speaks to them all, telling them to be ashamed for coveting things that belonged to him. He tells them to being back ‘what is his’ (the seal? Or simply their faith in him?), or face the consequences. After hearing the Voice, Gabe tells his life story. He was confused by everyone telling him what to believe, until he decided to give up on it all. He escaped to Avantasia to help the elves and dwarves, who made him think about life even more. He has nobody left in the real world, other than Anna. He’d been alone until the Druid came. Lugaid taught him how to be free, and how to find Avantasia. He says that Lugaid promised to help free Anna if he helped save Avantasia. Lugaid said to go to Avantasia, to open the gate and not close it behind him (i.e, to learn to dream again and allow others to do the same). To stop people living in darkness, and allow them to tell stories and to dream (basically, defy the Inquisiton), or everyone will end up brainwashed. Gabe tells the Voice that, sure, he’ll bring him the seal. But he still doesn’t know why any of this is happening, and he still misses Anna. Then the Dwarf chimes in, and says that Gabe is just exhausted. One day he’ll realise what it all means. The gate is just a metaphor for the imagination, and the seal stands for works of fiction, that allow you to be imaginative and creative, and allow you to escape to another world (i.e, Avantasia) for a while. That’s all it is. The Church doesn’t want people to dream of these fantasy worlds, so they dress them up as ‘wicked dreams’. Elderane says that, whenever Gabe feels lonely, he can come back to Avantasia. |

| Avantasia – The Tower Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
Gabriel returns to his favourite state - confusion. He’s never had a dream that’s been real before, obviously. So he’s confused. He’s gone through a door, and now everything is different - even his appearance. Where should he go? He still can’t work out if he’s in a dream or not. All he knows is, he’s got to help Vandroiy, his only friend. He also knows that he’s got to find the seal, but there’s nothing nearby to show him were to start looking. The Druid says that Gabe needs to stop looking, and start feeling. He’s in Avantasia now, he doesn’t need to know where to go. He can just go there. He should go to the Tower. He meets the Elf again, and Elderane says that although men have good intentions, many of them can be bribed or tempted. He says it’s probably best for Gabe not to know what’s happening. Gabe agrees. Sometimes, you have to do what you have to do. Meanwhile, the Pope has reached the Tower, and a mysterious voice tells him to throw the seal over the walls of the tower. Clearly, the voice wants it. The Pope isn’t (quite) that stupid however, and asks when he gets his reward, and what all this ‘land of illumination’ stuff really is. The Pope’s greed, however, has lost him the seal. Gabriel now has it, as Lugaid reveals. It’s not the end of the war, just the beginning, but it’s a start, right? Finally, Jakob laments the lost seal, and wonders who to blame. Or even if there should be blame at all. |

| Avantasia – Sign Of The Cross Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
The Pope and his consorts arrive in Avantasia (mammon is a biblical word meaning material wealth and richness). The Pope claims they’ve been elected to fight against evil… for profit? How does that work? Gabriel accuses them of being blind, and sees the Church as castigating everything and drowning people in their wine (ramming their holiness down everyone’s throat). The Bishop then brings up the Ten Commandments as a form of justification for their actions, and says his job is to judge anyone who doesn’t fear the Lord. The Elf then warns Gabe that the Pope’s war against Evil will destroy Avantasia (because people won’t be able to dream any more), and when Avantasia is destroyed, the world will be slaves to the holy orders. The Dwarf then tells Gabe that he’s the chosen one, chosen (by Vandroiy?) to help he and Elderane win the war (anyone getting Narnia flashbacks yet?). Regrin wants Gabe to reclaim the book that he read (the one the Pope now has), because the Pope has no idea what he’s doing. Regrin says that Gabe’s mind has been sheltered from the truth for too long, he’s been a sheep in the flock, and now he’s got to wake up and save Avantasia - and himself (and presumably, the world). Gabe promises to do so, saying that a dream is forever (his dream with Anna certainly seems to be…), so Avantasia will be fine. Who could be powerful enough to destroy a dream? |

| Avantasia – Inside Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
Gabe is now inside Avantasia, and meets an Elf called Elderane, and a Dwarf called Regrin. However, he’s convinced he’s just dreaming, and wonders why he’d never heard of Avantasia before. He’s also ashamed of himself for being lost in dreams while Anna needs him. However, he assumes that if he stops dreaming, Avantasia will disappear. |

Gabe is pretty annoyed about the fact that the Church is busy gallivanting in all it’s glory, while he - formerly a proud member of it - is bleeding and hurt, and nobody seems to care. The Druid then tells him to open his mind, to imagine a better place, a place of light and dreams and fantasy. Forget about reality, and what is, and focus on what could be. This Gabe does, and find himself in Avantasia. I assume the book he read, and the ‘magic lines’ in Reach Out For The Light had something to do with this. |

| Avantasia – The Glory Of Rome Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
Johann, the bishop and Falk, the bailiff, are on their way to Rome. Falk is sick and tired of the routine and plainness of daily life, while the Pope is living it up in the capital. Surely that’s heresy in itself? :p Johann has brought the book that Gabriel read (the one that started this whole mess), for the Pope to look at, meanwhile still spouting his prayers of salvation and destruction of the devil. The Pope tells them that they have part of a seal which will unlock ‘the land of illumination’ (absolute wisdom, the Holy Grail, whatever you want to think of it as). Understandably, he wants it. |

| Avantasia – Farewell Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
Gabe reflects on his childhood with Anna, frolicing (to 'gambol' is to run/skip/frolic around in a playful manner) around in 'paradise', another use of the word, this time to mean a place of safety, rather than heaven itself. Their home, in this case. Gabe was her protector, and obviously loved her dearly. Something happened to tear them apart from one another, and they spent their days praying to see each other again. Gabe never let go of the dream they shared, and still hopes that one day they'll be together forevermore. Awww. Then Anna speaks, which considering she's currently being crucified, must surely be in a dream or vision? She asks Gabe where he is now, why he isn't protecting her as he did in days past. Gabe says that he's been in prison, as we know (also, less literally, he's been hurting and desperate to see her again). But now he's made his mind up, and no religious laws (or even literal holy water) can make him give up his dream of being with her. Then the Druid chimes in, with something stereotypically cryptic. |

| Avantasia – Breaking Away Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
This is a refreshingly simple song. Lugaid the Druid is helping Gabe escape from the prison to go and free Anna. ‘Always been a novice in quest for paradise. Hope they will forgive me for I apostatize. I can't be no hypocrite, can't wear a masquerade... New horizons wait...’ Gabe finally grows some balls, and decides to say ‘screw the Church, Anna is more important. They’ll forgive me if I turn out to be right’. ’And now the time has come to go another way. To learn for life and to grow ripe and prevent the decay...’ Gabe decides to learn life his own way, and become his own man, not keep rotting away as a cog in the Church engine (or, more literally, in his prison cell). |

| Avantasia – Malleus Maleficarum Lyrics | 18 years ago |

Simply an example of the scare tactics Jakob was talking about in Serpents in Paradise. Falk (a bailiff/officer/inquisitor-type) is torturing a girl for heresy. That's basically it. |
|
| Avantasia – Serpents In Paradise Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
This song carries on the themes from Reach Out For The Light - namely, the struggle and confusion between good and evil, and temptation. In the beginning - verse 1 - Gabriel is either watching, or has heard about, Anna being crucified for witchcraft (the Malleus Maleficarum, or Hexenhammer, is the Medieval law of Witchcraft and Heresy). Afterwards, in verses 2 and 3, he goes into uber-coward mode, and starts begging for mercy, claiming that although he was related to her, he hardly knew the real Anna (‘Father forgive me, for I’ve hardly seen the human deep within’), and would never have stood up for herhad he known she was a witch (‘Prayed for salvation, I fought for her soul, scarred by the horned’). Serpents on the way to Paradise I’d hope was obvious. Garden of Eden, serpent, apple. ‘nough said? It’s all about temptation, and how (according to Friar Jakob), his congregation are faciong more and more of it each day. ’Father forgive me for what I have done. For I betrayed the one that I loved like a son. Demons and spells are they reality?’ Now it’s Jakob’s turn to say sorry to God, for letting Gabe stray from God’s path. ’The pest and the schism; the power of the Moor’ The Moors were North African Islams, who lived in southern Iberia/north Africa during the Medieval period (in what is now Morroco, Algeria, southern Spain and Portugal). Christians considered them evil - basically because they weren’t Christian. ’We've got to fight. Keep our people afraid... Keep them away from what they shall not see.’ The classic Medieval scare tactics. Prevent people from realising there’s an alternative to Christianity. If they don’t know an alternative exists, they won’t keep trying to find one all the time, and will keep people like Jakob rich. Then we’re back to Gabriel, who’s now questioning everything again, and asking God what God would do if he were in Gabriel’s shoes. He’s confused, because everyone says Anna is a witch, but he keeps having visions of her crying in a tower. Does that make him a witch too? Or is Anna not a witch, and actually in trouble, which would mean Gabe was the good guy? Eventually he gives up and turns to the Druid for help. |

| Avantasia – Reach Out For The Light Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
Gabriel - the main character - is a novice of the Dominican order (the ones who helped Inquisitors and the like to hunt witches). Prior to the song, Gabriel has seen his step-sister Anna awaiting trial for heresy, which didn't go down too well with him, and now - knowing what a good person Anna is - Gabe is starting to doubt his faith. He snuck into a library and started reading forbidden texts (the 'works of evil' in the song). Unfortunately, he was caught by his Mentor, Friar Jakob, and sent to a dungeon, where we begin the song. So, the first few verses are Gabe moaning about being in a dungeon, wondering why God is letting this happen, and then realising that it probably has something to do with those forbidden texts he was reading. Enter Lugaid the druid. Lugaid basically tells Gabe to stop worrying about pleasing God, and open his mind. Being good is more than just praying and serving God. The books he read weren't evil, they were some kind of magic texts. Then poor Gabe is left more confused than ever, and starts questioning right and wrong, wondering if he's good or evil, whether or not Anna is innocent, and - given time - would probably start questioning up and down, or hot and cold. This leads into Serpents in Paradise... |
