Interesting, and probably right. the "Seventeen months a year" is saying its been like a sort of eternity, then, that the person that he used to be is separate, out of reach, and as the song progresses ("but now I understand") he realizes he "can't find the truth" because it is gone, and he has to remember it, use it maybe, but not try and get it back. In a sense, it's like growing up, still feeling like a kid but bearing the responsibility of an adult. |

in acoustic, this song is probably among the best seal has written. i have only actually heard that version though, so I don't know about the natural. must remember to get hold of it. it has a very subtle feel (at least acoustic vers. does) as though the relationship deteriorating was something that was always going to happen. no anger, only a soft sadness and fond memory. |

aak, drug ideas. understand the references but i can never believe them completely. strikes me as someone who used to be looked down on/worse off than others finally "becomes clean" and suddenly popular. but most of the people are only friends because of the new status, and Seal's saying the real friends were the ones who thought the person was amazing BEFORE they were popular. |

| after fame? trying to carry on even though nobody remembers you for what you used to be? that's the impression i get here. "I shut my eyes dream who I could be once more" and "If they only knew who I was before..." these sound like someone who had their 15mins of fame and is having trouble adapting back to normal life. call me out on if I'm wrong though. | |

i never realized he song was so complicated until i wrote it down. i'm not certain what the song means exactly, but parts of it sound like some sort of romance - "caught it on your face I know it's true" indicates somebody is trying to keep it hidden but cant deny it? help me here people... i'm not sure of this one. |

quite interestin nobodys actually mentioned what the songs about yet in all those comments! should b quite obvious 2 any1 whos seen HSM2 and not just got it off a friend or something - somebody has been so focused on what they wanna do and achieve they have accidentally pushed away evry1 else in getting it. this song is sort of a new resolve and realisation of this and the start of amendin it. |

I've gotta admit, this song confuses me too. Hmm. Meaning. Human struggle against all evil? It sounds like evil is being described in this woman and it is her attempt to take over and humans are resisting by "holding on to the love" This may sound strange, but all the talk of lies, disunity and pain seem to say this. |

it makes much more sense said that way. it is a bit of a strange meaning for such a powerful song, granted. At least it's not the meaning of the song that sells the album, it's the music. After all some songs have some damn weird meanings behind them. Look at the pizza hut song, that's about the Russian Mafia. Either that or I don't like it much. |

He's torn. Amazing song. The "trapped" references are him saying that the guilt is tearing him up but he hasn't the courage to admit to his crime. He doesn't want to be seen as a bad person, but deep down he knows he is, at least partly. It's about an accident, yes, but then the internal struggle and guilt that follow. |

Hmm. Maybe. It's just actionfrankdoll was fairly rude about my comments on Second Home By the Sea, and I have seen Genesis in concert. Just bear in mind that for somebody who's so sure that this isn't about a haunted house, actionfrankdoll seems to be avoiding what they actually think it IS. I suppose songs are free to interpret, but people should at least write what they think rather than just say "YOU ARE WRONG" Anyway, even if Collins is lying to the audiences of this song, Genesis has taken the lie a bit far, especially with their backgrounds in concert. |

Is a burglar going to care who/what lives in a house he's about to try and rob? He's more interested in what they own that he can sell!! For people who've read the comments on Home by the Sea, rather than just jumped at the chance to have a go at somebody, Phil Collins has said that this song is about the supernatural. So I can write what I wrote, smartass. Also for ghosts trapped somewhere for ages, what else are they going to talk about? The view out the windows? From their point of view their lives prior to getting stuck somewhere would be the most interesting thing they could talk about. Finally, who the heck knows what people are going to write songs about? People think of all kinds of different things and turn them into songs, some that don't even have words. |

if anyone's wondering why this one's so short it's the second half of home by the sea which makes it 11 minutes long for some reason. Home by the Sea was done just at the time the big long songs were fading out of sight, and it's one of the last done. So people don't get bored of it nowadays, they split in two and the second part is mostly instruments and acoustics. It is a pretty good song if you manage to listen to it for nearly 12 minutes, and rather than the people on the first half's comments, I'm gonna be blunt. IT'S ABOUT A HAUNTED HOUSE THAT SOME IDIOT BURGLAR BREAKS INTO AND GETS TRAPPED IN. THE SHADOWS/GHOSTS DECIDE TO BORE HIM TO NOT-QUITE-DEATH BY TELLING HIM STORIES OF LIFE BEFORE THEY GOT TRAPPED. I mean, you can tell half that just by looking at this verse! |

how can you say this song is about drugs? i get the references but it's not Seal's style at all. Interesting that love is "power, pleasure, pain". I've heard it said by Bill Bailey love is "betrayal, hatred and depression" and surely that's more accurate. Anyway, what's "light on the dark side of me" got to do with drugs? I reckon the whole drug thing started of as a malicious rumour which people considered in greater depth and here's the result. general slagging. |

well what if he's the one who can't live up to it? "you know i love you but i just can't take this" sounds like he's struggling and he's the one that wants out, and the promises bit sounds like he was expecting something else which he didn't get, and feels hard-done by. maybe the "you're leaving" just means the decision's already been made, and that she agrees. it's a hard one to call, this. |
