she wants to commit suicide but she knows that God says it is selfish because you are letting others suffer while you get off easy..at the end she decides not to kill herself because she knows someday there will be happiness in heaven and if she kills herself, she will never get there. |

in my opinion, i think this song is about saving someone and telling them about Christ. we are wasting our time and letting it slip without telling others about Him. "how could i have been so polite, to simply let her die?" is saying that she didnt want to pressure someone into accepting Christ so she just let it go, but that causes the person to be seperated from eternal life. "the darkness thats killing her, well that is just not my concern." is saying that she didnt want to bother with telling others about Christ and she was more concerned with herself. "Who am I to spread my fingers after God has filled my hands?" we are given oppurtunities to save others but we are letting them go. |

penholder isn't just about her songwriting, its about her life. everything that we do in life isn't through our strength but Gods. she also mentions that in perfect "im running on just your strength alone". we dont deserve anything in life..not even pain. it's only through God's grace that we can take each breath. "i just held the pen that day" and "ill show you what he did but i wont take the credit" refers to how God works through us to reach other people. we are not the ones doing the work, God is using us for his work. if you understand that, the rest of the song should make sense.. |
