| Agalloch – Our Fortress Is Burning... II - Bloodbirds Lyrics | 11 years ago |
|
This song expresses my pessimistic view of life and mankind perfectly. I cannot recall how many times I have shed tears with this song, especially when he cries in agony at the end. This is my interpretation of it. Remember that this is just my personal view on the song. Art is subjective, anyone may draw his own conclusions. "The god of man is a failure" I do not believe they mean literally a god of an organized religion. I think what is meant here is the "God" that mankind has become. A powerful, destructive force that is a bane on this planet, both to nature and to ourselves. "Our fortress is burning against the grain of the shattered sky Charred birds escape from the ruins and return as cascading blood Dying bloodbirds pooling, feeding the flood" I like to think of these 3 lyrics as having a double meaning. a) The planet's point of view: The fortress in this case is nature. A forest being burned along with all the animals that live in it. The fires are extending high against the shattered, blackened sky. The birds being mentioned represent animals and nature and all the collective death that they have seen, all the drops of blood that have created a pool of blood. Nature is dying along with all of its creatures, and mankind is the reason. b) Mankind's point of view: The fortress, under this light, is civilization. We have commited so many crimes towards our planet, that we have forged our demise and our civilization is bound to be destroyed. The sky (Earth) is shattered, and the grains of time that count our demise keep falling. We do not have much time left. We will all be wiped from the face of the Earth, and our arrogance will be our own undoing. We have wounded the Earth beyond repair, and the natural disasters that will occur will be our end. In this case, we are the birds. We are charred, because we live in a fortress that is burning. We become blood in the sense that we all add to the bloodshed of the planet. We are all equally to blame. Imagine all the wrongs mankind has committed as a huge pool of blood, and each and every human as one drop. "The god of man is a failure And all of our shadows are ashes against the grain" After having expressed the opinion that we will all die after having killed everything else on the planet, it is repeated that we, as a species, are a failure. Our shadows are our wretched existences. What was charred and burning is now ashes. We are dying along with nature. The cries at the end... I like to percieve them both as cries of mother Earth as she is bleeding in agonizing pain, or as the desperate cry of a man expressing his shame and wrath towards the rest of mankind. |

| Blind Guardian – Damned for All Time Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| Actually, it is neither about Corum nor Hawkmoon. It is about John Daker, whose most well-known and important incarnation is Erekose. The reason why there are references to Corum, Elric, Hawkmoon and their actions and characteristics is that John Daker is the only Champion who is able to remember all of his incarnations, past and future, so he is also Elric, Corum and Hawkmoon. Apart from the obvious referenced in the lyrics, the title of the song also indicates that. John Daker is eternally doomed to bear the memories of all his incarnations. | |
| Meshuggah – Combustion Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| This song rapes your ears, moves towards your brain, fucks it up, and then proceeds to cleanse your soul through the power of pure awesomeness. That pretty much sums it up. | |
| Death – Voice of the Soul Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| Well, in short, this song is literally the voice of the soul. It's like a desperate attempt to cry out for all the wrongs one has lived in his life. So melancholic... | |
| Amon Amarth – Cry of The Black Birds Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| It says "Dead and wounded, they all are one", I think. | |
| Opeth – Blackwater Park Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
In a few words, Blackwater Park is all about expressing how disgusting and repulsive people can be. However, contrary to what stated before, I believe that in the last line, 'Blackwater Park' is the narrator's own existence. He cannot have any more faith in humanity, so the sun sets forever over his life. He just has had enough. I believe this and some of Nevermore's songs best describe misanthropy, the feeling that you just cannot cope with humanity anymore. |

| Arcturus – Ad Astra Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| I can only assume that this song is about death. I think it is about a person who has searched a lot to find meaning in life, but could not, therefore he embraces death as a way of finding everything he could not in life, everything 'ideal', as he says in the last line | |

Hey, Blackened89: First of all, you cannot judge Warrel Dane's knowledge of religious matters, as you simply do not know how much he knows, neither can you assume where his knowledge stems from. The fact that he has not studied Theology does not make him incapable of acquiring knowledge from different sources, which, as far as I know, are many. Supporting that a person may only express his opinion when he has a diploma on the certain subject is not only contrary to your latter comment about freedom of speech, but also utterly ignorant, as in that case people would be, more or less, robots designed for one sole purpose. I am not going to even comment on your indirect insult about LSD intake, as it was just too immature to deserve any of my attention. Moving on: THE MEDIA? Brainwashing into DESPISING religion? Seriously, when was the last time you saw the media doing that? I am only 17 years old yet I've seen and read enough to know that the media is possibly the greatest source of propaganda when it comes to religion, but in order to drag us into it and force us, in their own way, to believe and not the opposite. Moving on once again. The more you talk, the more you sound like women above 70 years old here in Greece, honestly. Who are you to say that whoever does not belong to a group of any organized religion, submits to society? So by stating that, you are saying that there are only two aspects in life; Society and religion. Therefore religious people are enemies of society, and politicians or anyone who cares about social studies, are atheists or anti-religious. Once again, too ignorant. Well, I am really sorry that I had to be the one to tell you this, because obviously you have never heard of it before, but religion has direct connections with society and its benefits. For starters, since its very roots, religion was either used or manipulated in order to lead the humble people. May I remind you of something called 'war'? Now please tell me that 98% of the times, the cause of war was religious differences. Moral codes? Laws? Leadership and its corruption? Have they, or have they not, been affected to a dramatic extent by religion? Of course, you could always lick on the same lollipop any religious person does and say that "that is man's fault". Is it, or is it just that man created religion in order to benefit from it and that all this started from, and end to, mankind? Moreover, what some people perceive as "nothingness" and "meaninglessness", others view as a way of life. It's about personal ideology and belief and stance towards life. We also mock and find your way of life mislead. Once again, you have no right to judge. Einstein, eh? Let's see. You started your lecture by saying that Mr. Warrel Dane has not studied Theology. When exactly did Einstein study Theology? Why do you suddenly admire a person who has no valid diploma over a certain matter? To end with, I would like to say that as in every group of people, there are also extreme atheists who believe all the things you said. I am an atheist, and I criticize them too. But I am afraid that atheism doesn't necessarily mean that you have no personal sense of what is right and what is wrong, thus chasing the former and avoiding the latter, or at least trying to. This is a complete different subject. When you help someone, you help him because you know that it is right, and that you too would like to be helped when you need to. Life, suicide...yet again, personal view of life. To sum up, I've got two words for you. BLIND and IGNORANT. And that is what you are. Good day to you. |

| Poisonblack – The Living Dead Lyrics | 18 years ago |

Strange that nobody has commented on this song, it's very meaningful. To me, this song is about when you cannot have what you really want, so you have to compromise with what you do have. And when eventually you embrace what you want, you realise that even that is not good enough. I prefer skipping the last part's meaning though.. |

| Anathema – Are You There? Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
Honestly, Terry84's words touched me. At least I know that there are more people except for me who feel exactly what the song means. Obviously, the song is about the mother of the Cavanaghs, but I guess it can mean anyone that any person loves and has lost. |

| Anathema – One Last Goodbye Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
yesterday Anathema performed live in the Rockwave Festival in Greece, and Vincent said the following words before playing One Last Goodbye: "This next song is dedicated to a person we really loved who passed away...But it can also be for a person you love and you lose without his or your will" I think it sums it up.. |

| Anathema – Lost Control Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I agree with oswen, the intro is a bit...silly if I might say. It sounds completely emo. However, the rest of the song is just great...it's actually referring to any depressing situation, the kind of situation when you feel you've literally lost control of your life and the way its led. |

| A Perfect Circle – Pet Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I am like 3 years late to post the definition of this song, but I'll do that nevertheless :) Many different opinions have been posted so far, mostly about Bush, parental care and organized religion. The way I see it, it's not about a specific fact, such as the above, but it's generally about deceiving others and playing them like puppets in order to coax them into believing you, to make them think that you are the only one who wants their benefit. But as you can understand, the most bright examples of this 'trickery' are politics, religion, and parental love, which -sadly- includes hiding the complete truth in order to keep children safe in a bubble consisted of fallacy and illusion. |
