Grey Skies was also the name of Devin's first band, and the grey references pop up in other songs e.g Voices In The Fan - "grey days that I'll remember the most", Deadhead - "the grey line...the Greyhound home", The Way Home, etc. For all it's silliness, I like that there's still some deep moments in the Ziltoid record :) |

I just saw Pinback live tonight, they were amazing! They didn't play this, but it's one of my favourites. It has a personal meaning for me as I used to be a carpark attendant. It was an underground carpark, and being underground we couldn't get radio or TV reception, so most of the time I would stream local radio stations on the internet. Funnily enough, that was where I heard my first Pinback song, 'Good to Sea'. I must've listened to that song at least 20 times the first day I heard it. Later I was transferred to another nearby carpark that was part of a shopping centre, and it was the single most soul-crushing job i've ever had. 'Grey Machine' reminds me of the way I felt doing that job. Aside from having hardly any interaction with people and feeling trapped in a multi-level concrete box, people treated you like absolute sh*t to boot. No one is happy in shopping centre carparks, trust me. You see the most mundane and materialistic aspects of life every moment of every day. It was such an isolated job, sitting there all day in my cement box, but it gave me plenty of time to reflect... and listen to Pinback on the internet. So thank you subterranean hell, without you I may have never found Pinback :) PS - @HC MOS I completely agree with your analysis. |

| Devin Townsend – The Way Home! Lyrics | 14 years ago |

Yeah, the line in deadhead is "Now the rain it comes, the rain it blurs the grey line ...the grey line...the Greyhound home". I love that line so much, it conveys such a heavy sense of depression and movement in so few words. Anyone who ever took a long depressing bus trip home (or far away from home)can relate to this I think. And the reference definitely adds another layer to this song for me. I love this song, and I love Devin's music so much. He just keeps getting better. I didn't think much of Addicted at first (loved the 1st track, hated Bend it Like Bender), but over a year later, I have this song (The Way Home) on repeat at the moment. So many of Dev's greatest tracks are 'growers' for me. It's like my brain is physically incapable of realising how good certain songs are for at least a year :p |

I know lots of people are complaining that this song (particularly the parts below) are chavvy and crap songwriting. But I think that in the context of the song as a whole (eg the chorus being quite complex and melodic in structure)it just makes these lines even more powerful - she's clearly a smart person, yet this relationship is causing her to be increasingly shallow and petty: "You said I must eat so many lemons 'cause I am so bitter I said: "I'd rather be with your friends, mate 'Cause they are much fitter," & You've gone and got sick on my trainers I only got these yesterday Oh my gosh, I cannot be bothered with this" I think these words (and the way she sings them) when contrasted with the beautiful melody of the chorus make it even more apparent that she's wasting herself and her life here, making herself a worse person in the relationship - and hints that the guy is maybe not that bad, just stuck in the same spiral too. It's a tragically beautiful song about relationships and how we seem to prefer to grind each other down and screw each other over out of desperation to simply avoid being alone, or having to start again with someone else. |

| I love this song - I'd completely forgotten it, but it came on the radio the other day and I just had to look it up again. Interestingly enough, I always wondered who the girl singing was, and it turns out that it's Sia Furler (she did 'Breathe Me', the song on the Postsecret video), who's currently dating JD Samson from Le Tigre. | |
