Natgry is almost right. This song is about Norman Mailer and Marylin Monroe, but it is also "a kiss off" of his exwife, the mother of Jordan Zevon. After the breakup of Zevon and his first wife, he found out that she was sleeping with another musician, and in the liner notes of "Warren Zevon" (the new version) Jordan says that his mother confessed to him before she passed that the song was a "fuck you" to her for sleeping with this other musician. |

I love this song. My favorite part: "And if California slides into the Ocean, like the mystics and statistics say it will; I predict this motel will be standing, until I pay my bill."
I just find that line so literate, so verbose, I can't describe it. Hearing excellent songwriting from People like Warren and Ellis Paul just makes some of the crap that actually gets people famous even more disappointing. |

I have to agree that Buddy isn't dead. The last thing he saw was the flashing red light (the light that goes off when you score a goal). I just think that he was knocked unconscious. I never even thought of the death angle until I saw this debate. I suppose it works both ways, but I like the idea of Buddy winning and getting to retire. |

This is an amazing song to listen to, and obviously its about the South during the Civil War, yet it is mixed in with modern things (were there really high schools in the south in the 1860s)? I don't know enough about education in the US at that time to guess if thats right. I don't think that this is a song about promoting racial differences, but how is Warren, as the rock'n'roll guy he was (drinking, etc) comparing his "renegade" actions to Dixie? |

I think this song is about a couple trying to work through issues, and the girl won't let the guy help her deal with her problems, or open up to her. The black leather bag must hold whatever it is that she uses to cope or isolate herself... |

I can tell you what this song really is about, straight from Ellis' lips. I heard him explain the meaning of the song at a concert in Mass last year. Basically, one of his good friends broke up with his girlfriend, and he'd had this secret crush on her. There was a spark between them, but Ellis knew that acting on it would ruin his relationship with his other friend, so he had this made up relationship with her in the song. And her name wasn't maria... Still, an amazing song... |
