Boom Boom Mancini Lyrics

Hurry home early hurry on home
Boom Boom Mancini's fighting Bobby Chacon
Hurry home early hurry on home
Boom Boom Mancini's fighting Bobby Chacon

From Youngstown, Ohio, Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini
A lightweight contender, like father like son
He fought for the title with Frias in Vegas
And he put him away in round number one

Hurry home early hurry on home
Boom Boom Mancini's fighting Bobby Chacon
Hurry home early hurry on home
Boom Boom Mancini's fighting Bobby Chacon

When Alexis Arguello gave Boom Boom a beating
Seven weeks later he was back in the ring
Some have the speed and the right combinations
If you can't take the punches, it don't mean a thing

Hurry home early hurry on home
Boom Boom Mancini's fighting Bobby Chacon
Hurry home early hurry on home
Boom Boom Mancini's fighting Bobby Chacon

When they asked him who was responsible
For the death of Duk-koo Kim
He said, "Some one should have stopped the fight
And told me it was him."

They made hypocrite judgements after the fact
But the name of the game is be hit and hit back

Hurry home early hurry on home
Boom Boom Mancini's fighting Bobby Chacon
Hurry home early hurry on home
Boom Boom Mancini's fighting Bobby Chacon

A tragic after-story:-

Mancini attended Duk Koo Kim's funeral in Korea. It obviously affected him badly as he suffered from depression for some time.

Even more tragic, both Kim's mother and the fight referee suicided shortly after.

Classic Zevon biographical songwriting. Zevon is perhaps the greatest songwriter America has ever produced. He's like Robert Johnson, Elvis, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Johnny Rotton, and Patti Smith all rolled into one. All the best American songwriters multiplied by one another

@TheThornBirds I LOVE ZEVON, but come on man…

How many non-boxing experts first thought, judging from the song title, that this was a song about classical music composer and performer Hency Mancini?

As they say, you can't judge a book by looking at the cover.

Ah yes, another great Zevon song.

No hidden meaning here. It's a musical ode to the boxer Ray Mancini. The Duk Koo Kim mentioned in the lyrics was a boxer who'd ben dehydrated and ill before the bout as a result of losing weight in order to qualify. Mancini inflicted injuries on him that resulted in Kim's death a few days later. As a result of this, boxing bouts were brought down to a 12 round limit.
