The Smashing Pumpkins – Here Is No Why Lyrics 12 years ago
Wow. I just couldn't disagree more with this post. MCIS is brilliant by itself, but when you add all of the extra material on the Singles/The Aeroplane and it's just an incredible testament to the creativity and productivity of the Pumpkins at this point in their career. It may not be as coherent or flowing as Siamese Dream, but it is NOT infinite bullshit.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Quasar Lyrics 13 years ago
With my CD liner notes in hand, here are the correct lyrics:

God right on!
Krishna right on!
Mark right on!
Yod He Vau He Om
Let's ride on!
Right on!
Let's ride on!

Fated One hold me down
Know my blur and my keep
Do I know you?
What keeps us free if you believe?
Please allow me to say hello to you
Yes I understand
Yes I know thy will
Yes I am that man
Yes, I
Yes, I

Lover, lover, catch me slow
You can serve me notice
You can have my sight
Lover, lover stay with me tonight

Yod He Vau He Om
Brothers, Sisters roam!
Sunlight ride on!
Yod He Vau He Om
Let's ride on!
Right on!
Ride on!

Yes I understand
Yes I know thy will
Yes I am one man
Yes, I
Yes I understand
Yes I know thy will
Yes I am one man
Yes, I
Yes, I
Yod He Vau He Om
Yod He Vau He Om
Yod He Vau He Om
Om...

Rise Against – Survivor Guilt Lyrics 14 years ago
It's interesting to listen to this song and read these comments as I am an American soldier currently deployed to Iraq, the place that several commenters have opined this song may be written about. I just downloaded the album tonight while at an MWR wi-fi hotspot on our FOB.

The first thing that needs to be said that hasn't yet been pointed out is that "Survivor Guilt" is something that happens to people, particularly soldiers, who experience a traumatic situation such as a buddy's death in combat. People with survivor guilt find fault with themselves, believing that their survival was a mistake that may have resulted in the traumatic event. "Joe wasn't supposed to have gone on that patrol. It should have been me. He's dead because I didn't go on that patrol."

McIlrath is clearly talking about war in the Middle East. Folded flags and Purple Hearts symbolize the casualties of war. The song's protagonist seems to be a fallen soldier, demanding an explanation of the cause that sent him to his grave. A cause he once believed in. McIlrath claims we are engaged in war against an artificial enemy, invented to line cowards' pockets. By giving voice to this fallen soldier, McIlrath gives voice to his own survivor guilt.

I've never completely agreed with Rise Against's politics. I don't fully agree with all of the claims McIlrath makes in this song, having personally spent nearly two years of my life on the ground in Iraq, working closely with Iraqi citizens. Nevertheless, I've always been a fan of McIlrath's passion and eloquence. His words are powerful, and this is another great RA song.

My favorite line from this one: "I fought with courage to preserve not my way of life but yours." Amen, Tim.

Rage Against the Machine – Mic Check Lyrics 15 years ago
First of all, I absolutely love this song. Great beat, amazing work with the guitar. Some of the lyrics are very clever as well. I love the comment that the line about the priest, the book and the congregation may be a metaphor for the government. Religion promises to take care of humanity's spiritual needs. Government promises to take care of humanity's temporal needs (whether or not it should do so is subject to debate).

But I still think Zach is out of touch with reality when I hear lines like "Those naked and wageless/Now scream within cages/What, they make you pull your shit/Just to get your share, what?"

You mean, you gotta WORK to survive??? WTF?!!

The Weakerthans – Our Retired Explorer (Dines with Michel Foucault in Paris, 1961) Lyrics 17 years ago
All right, all you francophones, what's the French in this song mean?

"Comment allez-vous ce soir? Je suis comme ci comme ça"

I plugged it into Babel Fish, and got this:

"How are you this evening? I am like Ci like that"

Obviously the second part of the translation is messed up. Any thoughts?

Weezer – Miss Sweeney Lyrics 17 years ago
guy digochi, I think you might be on to something there. Suzanne is actually the first song that comes to mind when I hear this song. This is a new classic for Weezer. Very funny, but its got that Pinkerton emotion.

Can anyone tell what's being said in the Nextel conversations in the background?

Weezer – The Greatest Man That Ever Lived (Variations on a Shaker Hymn) Lyrics 17 years ago
fsm is calling this the "song of the year," consolation says "this is the greatest song that ever lived," but dagrim thinks it's "the worst fucking song I've ever heard," and sporkism registered with the express purpose of slamming this song. Seems like it's kind of hard to be indifferent about this one.

I can't wait to hear it live!

What is the deal with the "radioactive" line?

Weezer – The Greatest Man That Ever Lived (Variations on a Shaker Hymn) Lyrics 17 years ago
"After the havoc that I’m gonna wreak / No more words will critics have to speak"

Seems like he's provoking the critics here. Sort of like, "You don't like me? Then you're gonna HATE this..."

"Hey, this is nothing new / I’ve got more than enough for you."

I think this part is almost an acknowledgment that this song is a departure in a lot of ways - while it still manages to stay true to the Weezer sound, and what the band stands for. And it's also a reassurance that Weezer's still got more in store, more to give to its fans. They're not done, so don't count them out, and don't act so surprised!

Long live the Weez!

Weezer – In The Garage Lyrics 18 years ago
bubblegum lemonade hit it earlier, but this is the best song about a reticent rock star since Brian Wilson wrote "In My Room," IMO.

Here's a great compilation of similarities b/n Weezer and the Beach Boys:

http://mattbrundage.com/music/weezerbeachboys.html

Here's a pertinent excerpt:

"In the aforementioned songs, both mention laughter: Brian's "...laugh at yesterday" and Rivers' "..no one laughs about my ways". While Brian relies on the room itself to shut out the fears and pain, River relies on personal possessions to keep his mind off things: posters on his wall, role playing games, et cetera. Both have a personal attachment to their rooms, and use them as vehicles for self expression. While "In My Room" is somber and lonely, "In the Garage" was written immediately following Weezer's signing with DGC Records, so naturally the song comes off as light and happy."
