| The Mars Volta – Since We've Been Wrong Lyrics | 11 years ago |
| the chorus is such a perfect description of falling out of love. like you've both been so involved in an imaginary world and being "part awake" to reality without any hint of romance would drive you mad | |
| Active Child – High Priestess Lyrics | 11 years ago |
No i think this is about his relationship with his mother. His mother is the High Priestess. He has obviously returned from a journey and possibly ended a relationship and his mother is giving him words of advice.. "What you gonna do? Get a job? Pull your weight now?" She asks what he'll do when the girl calls for him or wants him back or just expects him to make sacrifices and he replies 'Can you help me' as if he's asking for the maternal support he needs to make difficult decisions. Listen to my breath/prayer. Not sure which but this is the voice of his mother. Priestess sitting up on a golden throne - more evidence of his admiration and near worship for this woman. Pat has vivid red hair and the imagery of a golden throne makes me wonder if his mother also has red hair. Maybe not but could be poetic and the symbol of a golden throne works either way. The final line 'No! You'd better get what you came for. Listen to yourself!' is his mother telling him that just because his heart is broken, doesn't mean that he can give up. The whole song pays homage to maternal strength and the power of the feminine. As if he discovers that although he thought he had been discouraged by the end of a love, he was affected far more by his mothers response to his despondence. |

| Volcano Choir – Acetate Lyrics | 11 years ago |
Another way of looking at the Vernon side of things, is the aftermath of his reaction to the Grammys. "I won't crawl on you to validate.." especially rings true with a lot of artists who feel shunned by corregorate award ceremonies like that. Maybe its explanatory and quite fitting considering Volcano Choirs stance on the market. i.e.. an unconventional, earthy rock band; not something the Grammys would digest. |
| Volcano Choir – Acetate Lyrics | 11 years ago |
| Agreed. In terms of his personal life, I'm imagining this has something to do with the end of his relationship with Kathleen Edwards. They were presumably close during the 'fallout' of Bon Iver, Bon Iver and this could be a new project, new perspective track. It's pretty ambiguous but narrative seems to describe some line that's been crossed in his morals or principles etc. but wtf knows | |
| Leonard Cohen – In My Secret Life Lyrics | 12 years ago |
This song isnt as overtly political as some others but I think the the fact he only touches on a political note puts emphasis on how weary and resigned to preaching he is. It's almost a final, futile cry of agony over our developing culture of disconnect and skewed values. "im always alone.. / ..it's crowded and cold" is almost prophetic when considering the age of social networking. I think this song goes hand in hand with Waiting for the Miracle because ithey both depict old, valued relationships and reflect upon the naivety of ideality; the departure of which, he arguably presents and the 'human problem'. |
| Buck 65 – Phil Lyrics | 13 years ago |
No i think it can be taken literally. The name of the song is Phil so maybe he's talking about his brother.... Phil Terfry?.. Its a generally comforting song isn't it. and pretty sure it goes... "20 something years- that's a long walk even if it's night, [and] in a straight line." ...as if, because it was night, the length of the walk wasn't as obvious. Either way, it seems as though whoever he's trying to comfort has had a rough time. |

| Burial – NYC Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Love to see these lyrics written down, never made much sense before. Always heard "Didn't you know this is love?" - just made it all the more emotional but so good as it is. Agreed, Burial getting better and better x |
| The Throne – No Church in the Wild Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| it's definitely not a counter racism song. can't help but think that there'd be no church in the wild if the catholic church had been overthrown by the freemasons. call be superstitious but these themes keep cropping up in their music, it's getting silly. | |
| The Weeknd – The Party & the After Party Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Anybody who's been to a big, hormone-fueled house party with a cheeky wrap of coke in their pocket must have felt like this. Where attraction is second nature and the most romantic place you can be is not the garden under starry skies but crammed into the upstairs toilet with a few eager faces. do drugs |
| Kanye West – Flashing Lights (feat. Dwele) Lyrics | 14 years ago |
it yeezy not beezy or geezy. Yeezy - Kanye's stage name like Hove is another stage name for Jay-Z excellently executed self deprecation. he's rhyming about the struggles he has mixing business with pleasure - girls approach Kanye on a business level where he's a world class producer and extremely successful but they're let down when they discover that personally, he is quite different. Another introspective struggle with himself. badtimes - i wouldn't wanna struggle with him. |
| Childish Gambino – Heartbeat Lyrics | 14 years ago |
nah it's not about a fuckbuddy relationship. he's singing to his ex. saying that he knows what type of guy her new boyfriend is and that he's a dick. he's obviously hung up on her and they still have chemistry so they start sleeping together again but this just makes him more frustrated cos he loves her but she's messing around. i thought the last line was 'but you say the nastiest shit in bed, it's fucking awful' always thought it was quite tragic, as if she was careless because he really cares about her but i guess 'awesome' makes more sense. either way, great tune. wish i could remix it |

| Bon Iver – A Song for a Lover of Long Ago Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Rain you out of me, shake the memory free. Can't squash them open sores can't chase away the hope |
| Bon Iver – A Song for a Lover of Long Ago Lyrics | 14 years ago |
i think it's: Rain on the bar Clinging water mark(s); it hints at what I had and calls up what I can't. Rain you out of me.... ..can't chase away the hope....? |
| Puscifer – Monsoons Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Great song but it's 'without you' brittle, grey and brown. Yeah I agree Slayton although I would go a step further and say that in 'Only you can bring the colour in', Maynard is addressing a more universal entity. I see this song as more of a serenade to the cosmic dance. "Today, a young man on acid realized that all matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration — that we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively. There's no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we're the imagination of ourselves" - Bill Hicks I didn't know that about him scattering his mothers ashes in his vineyard though, i deffers think you're right. |
| Bon Iver – Michicant Lyrics | 14 years ago |
this song is definitely about doing coke when he was younger. im sure there's more to the song and there are reasons he's singing about itk but the coke references are obvious 'frost took up the eyes' 'veins....poison' 'nose up' and in the original version of the song he sings.. 'sorted off and payed up and arranged it on your powdered face' instead of.. 'melic in the naked, knew a lake and drew the lofts for page' |
| Bon Iver – Beth/Rest Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Nobody's really acknowledged how musically cultured all Bon Iver music is. Or the collective Gayngs that Vernon partially led. Gayngs produced a whole album of 80's influenced music with pretty inspiring results. These elements were bound to creep into this album. I agree with jjordenn, i dont know how you can judge a song purely through the use of musical techniques. If this is how everybody approached music, nobody would listen to hiphop. People are confusing popular synth technology of the 80s (which are perfectly legitimate tools) with the over-manufactured, corporate dullness of the decade. I want to have JV over for a few slow cups of coffee and pick his brain about this album. Ive never been so emotionally gratified, satisfied, pleasured, left-wanting and confused over an album. If anybody has a clue about this song - spell it out to me. |

| Woodkid – Baltimore's Fireflies Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| im living in a world of shallow people. i'm coming to accept it | |
| Woodkid – Baltimore's Fireflies Lyrics | 14 years ago |
This is one of the most amazing songs. I've spent about 3 months trying to sing along or at least decipher the lyrics and finally they're available. This Yoann Lemoine guy has a great voice, thank goodness he decided to but film on hold while writing music. Im so ecstatic that these lyrics are better in every way than anything i thought, i dont think i can do this justice right now but as far as the meaning goes-- it's clear he's drowned somebody and dealing with sincere guilt and shame. Possibly metaphoric for the end of a relationship. People have to talk about this music! it's rich and rewarding? what the fucks going on!? |
| Kanye West – Devil In A New Dress Lyrics | 15 years ago |
i think thats quite superficial. Kanye cant stop singing songs about bad relationships. i think he goes on tour in the summer and it puts a strain on his relationships and this song is about meeting a girl in a bar to try and patch things up. he feels cheated and messed around by her cos of the type of girl she is and even though he's proud, he's admitting that he still finds her funny and attractive so he wants to have sex with her. he seems to bring the ideas of christian girls and abstinence pretty early and it stays. maybe she was/is christian and that was always an element of their chemistry so he's singing about the way he feels. |
| The Radio Dept. – Heaven's On Fire Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| its about the mainstream music industry | |
| Leonard Cohen – Democracy Lyrics | 15 years ago |
i dont think its sarcastic. i think he's being ironic saying that "democracy is 'coming' to the USA" when the point of the USs existence is to be and have always been democratic although for along time it hasn't been. so at first this song sounds patriotic, preaching manifestdestiny etc when infact Cohen is cleverly highlighting the hypocracy of the whole system |
| Prince – Purple Rain Lyrics | 15 years ago |
the chili pepper song 'purple stain' always makes me think that this song has explicit sexual connotations which i suppose is not very far from the point of prince's very existence. |
| The National – Afraid of Everyone Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I dont think this song is particularly political, commenting on the american media or anything. I think again Berninger, is just painting a picture of a man, possibly representative of a portion of western society. 'Your voice is swallowing my soul' - i think thats berninger talking about this rather pathetic but equally identifiable persona |
| Bon Iver – Blood Bank Lyrics | 15 years ago |
On the other hand, LaurenBrittney could be half way there. It could be about a man and his partner trying to keep illusion of father Christmas alive to their child |
| Bon Iver – Blood Bank Lyrics | 15 years ago |
It is Interesting because the topic of sexual encounters and mor specifically, pregnancy appears several occassions on the blood bank e.p. I can't help but think this song is about Emma- after their break up and his previous band's break up and just before he wrote For Emma, Forever Ago, Vernon suffered from glandular fever more commonly known as the kissing disease because of the ease that the bacterier is transmitted through saliva. I think them being at the blood bank has something to do with that. Possibly, Emma cheated on him with his brother and they all ended up with glandular fever which is how he found out. Thoughts? |
| The Radio Dept. – Heaven's On Fire Lyrics | 15 years ago |
The lyrics posted are from a Kiss song of the same name haha The songs about the hypocratic and unjust mass marketing music industry. Im not sure if the radio dept. are signed but deffers not with a big label. He's just singing about what the initial sample is talking about. but they put an ironic spin on it cos the song is more pop than the rest of their music. So they're kindof criticising the popular music inustry who are afraid to step out of the norm and give support to bands like themselves. Its sounds sort of romantic aswell but i dont think there's any kindof romantic narrative happening xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx |
| The National – Conversation 16 Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Yeah Scott, I think you’re right. It’s a man commentating on the effects that his marriage and middle age are having on him. This could almost be ‘Slipping Husband’ from the husband’s perspective. The chorus confuses me though. It sounds as if he may be making reference to other men in his position — ‘We’ll leave the silver city’. The ‘silver city’ could be interpreted as the “perfect” lifestyle that the narrator’s tired of. Berninger, as always, is extremely self-deprecating although this song unusually contains some justification for his self-pity. The symbolism of a ‘silver girl’ may be reference to his wife and thus, the wives of all men suffering from the dysfunction he describes. The fact that Berninger uses the colour silver may be homage to the bitter feelings he has towards the stereotype of a trophy wife. He acknowledges his flaws; ‘I’ll try to be more romantic’ but ultimately blames this dysfunction on the trophy wives who aspire to mediocrity. Toward the end of the song, the repetition of the line ‘I was afraid I’d eat your brains cos I’m evil’ suggests he left his spouse, returning to a self-deprecating persona because of guilt. |

| Casiotone for the Painfully Alone – Young Shields Lyrics | 16 years ago |
this is just about young impulsive people. i dont think he's commenting on socio-political status or a certain generation. It's just about being young. Maybe the transition into adulthood where you believe in anarchy and true love and adventure. It's really clever though and i expect alot of people would identify with it if they heard it. It's how me and my girlfriend used to act - running away, being impulsive etc |
| Busted – 3 AM Lyrics | 16 years ago |
yeah great song and very clever. i think they're taking on the persona of Emily Rose from the Exorcism Of Emily Rose. Daemonic interference usually takes place at 3am (a satanic inversion of 3pm, the hour at which is commonly accepted that Jesus Christ was crucified). She's evidently speaking to Father Moore explaining the symptoms of her possession. |
| N.E.R.D. – You Know What Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| best opening line to any song. fairly self explanatory - he feels guilty about the sexual chemistry he has with his girlfriends sister | |
| Bon Iver – Roslyn Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| mrvidal's deff right aswell | |
| Anya Marina – Satellite Heart Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| The phrase Satellite Heart is explained by Anya in the chorus. Not sure this song was actually written with Twilight in mind | |
| Bon Iver – Roslyn Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| wow really wow. i think Bon Iver and Iron+Wine are abit above the likes of teen vampire romances but havent they just done fucking incredible jobs | |
| Bon Iver – Blood Bank Lyrics | 16 years ago |
i dont know. it could be a fabrication to play into our hearts but if not pregnancy definitely a love affair. Emma is Justins ex right? and they had a hard breakup for some reason which is why he went away around the time he wrote For Emma, Forever Ago. maybe Emma cheated on him with his brother and maybe this is written from the point of view of his brother. hmmmmmmm? yeah? no? maybe? |
| Kid Cudi – Pursuit of Happiness (Nightmare) (feat. MGMT & Ratatat) Lyrics | 16 years ago |
AMDdecker kinda right i think. I basically think the whole album is quite introspective. In the Cudi theme song he says 'they have no clue what I'm capable until I show a side of me no-one had thought could be within'. I dont think Cudi found growing up very easy so he got into smoking weed. Not to deal with depression but to be introspective and try to get his head round everything he didnt understand. As he grows he becomes more interested in drugs, psychedelia and the human psyche (which we see in Enter Galactic when he does shrooms with his girlfriend). Finally toward the end of the album he becomes more reflective about his development into adulthood and content with himself aswell as the unanswered questions around him. But the album finishes with a kindof epilogue stating that this is all just a stage and the journey goes on. great song and album though Cudi doesn't realise or won't acknowledge (maybe deliberately) that he's not the only one who's in that state of mind |
| Kid Cudi – I Poke Her Face Lyrics | 16 years ago |

| having "died" with someone is a (sometimes old) way of saying that you had an orgasm with someone | |
| Paloma Faith – New York Lyrics | 16 years ago |

love this song but the chorus is: her name was new york it's clever she's referring to new york city as the lady her love was leaving for. reminds me of my love |
| Kid Cudi – Pursuit of Happiness (Nightmare) (feat. MGMT & Ratatat) Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| what? isn't this song just about rolling up a joint and getting high even if your feeling abit down. Just moved along way from my girlfriend and this song is my song at the moment. | |

| Kanye West – Last Call (feat. Jay-Z) Lyrics | 16 years ago |

why does JayZ tell kanye to fuck off. at first i though it was cos Kanye was getting him to record his voice for the high parts in the song ("mr rockafella....") but i slowed it down and its not JayZs voice. WHYYYYYYYYYY? |
| Bon Iver – Blood Bank Lyrics | 17 years ago |
yeah this songs very clever. there at the blood bank for whatever reason - blood test or whatever. and it becomes obvious that she's pregnant with his brothers baby. she's tryna convince him and maybe herself abit that there's been a mistake cos the two brothers blood is similar and couldve been mixed up or something. then he talks about sitting in a car with her. but they still love eachother. he's in love with her honor that she doesnt want him and his brother to fall out so she lies he's in love with her cheek cos he loves the fact that she would be bold enough to do it and lie afterwards even though they both know and accept it because they've fallen in love blah blah blah |
| Bon Iver – Brackett, WI Lyrics | 17 years ago |
and as for manuelturclos its worth downloading 'for emma, forever ago', his first album. this is one of those songs which is very obviously rich musically and its so addictive i love it. but so is his whole previous album. Blood Bank - EP is abit different - still worth every penny. but i'd say if you like this, you're probably gonna like Flume, re:Stacks, Skinny Love, Wolves, Blindsided etc... its all really great music ____________ Gwilym Charles on iTunes. New E.P - Check it out! |
| Bon Iver – Brackett, WI Lyrics | 17 years ago |
presumably its about Brackett in Wisconsin (where he recorded For Emma) i think maybe he's nostalgic. i know that the town Brackett has disputed territory rights. granted, i got this from good old wikipedia but maybe that's important in the context of the song. it reminds me of where i grew up and everybody's moods and behavior were so easily dictated by the weather and the season and every summer is a hot token to the cold, cold take of lust. and every autumn singes with the business of sadness. |
| Mindy Smith – Out Loud Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| i like this song but i always thought it was 'hey friend, why are we always high?'. the narrative is more interesting with 'high' because of the implications. | |
