An amazing song. Maynard seems to be reaching out to be people in this album and talking about his experiences with his winery. If you watch the documentary "Blood to Wine" about Maynard's vineyard you will really appreciate this album.

Talking more about the song; first some people might think that he's talking about God being the one who can bring color / hope into the world. In reality I think he's praying and asking for the Earth or perhaps even his mother for help give the land what it needs to grow at his vineyard.

The Earth approach is very simple, but Puscifer music seems to be more along those lines, with it being mostly untouched emotions for Maynard to express, in contrast to Tool, which is more of a group expressing their shared emotions.

Maynard talking about his mom (Judith) would also be appropriate. However, if you watch "Blood to Wine" you will notice Maynard mentioning him spreading his mom's ashes over the vineyard so that she can grow into the vines, and become wine and travel the world. It brings me to believe that perhaps one of Maynard's strong beliefs is that his mom (as with other people that die) become building blocks for life and the universe to recycle and become a never ending supply of everything.

Regardless of the exact meaning, it's obvious that Maynard is asking for a "blessing" to his land so that he can continue to communicate with people through not only his music, but with wine as well.

An addicting and smooth song, anyone looking to zone out and let their mind drift should listen to this a few times.

Great song but it's 'without you' brittle, grey and brown.

Yeah I agree Slayton although I would go a step further and say that in 'Only you can bring the colour in', Maynard is addressing a more universal entity. I see this song as more of a serenade to the cosmic dance.

I didn't know that about him scattering his mothers ashes in his vineyard though, i deffers think you're right.

The lyrics aren't "So why am I" he's saying, "So wine and vine."

This song can be summed up simply and generally as a prayer for rain. As a winemaker, Maynard has to depend on the rain to "bring color" or life to "relieve" an otherwise thirsty and dying vineyard. Rain represents hope for a fruitful harvest season.

On a similar note, this song has a strong Earth theme. Maynard knows his place in the order of things when he asks "Why am I to carry on?". He knows that he can do his part but still fail because he must depend on something greater than himself. He is acknowledging the greater forces at work here that could save or ruin him.

This is one of the best songs on the album by far.

Maynard's singing is just beautiful. Combined with the somewhat strange beat it just sounds spectacular.

I believe that he is talking about a combination of the things already mentioned, the rain, his mother, and "a more universal entity" as someone put it.

The lyrics "Long until the heavens relieve us" are incorrect. He actually says "Long exhale to heaven relieve us". Also the lyrics "And cry pouring motion down" I think are wrong. He says "And cry and pour emotion down". Also the lyrics "Without you gray and brown" are actually "Without you, brittle, gray and brown". Also "So why am I can carry on to" is actually "So I and mine can carry on to". Also, "The sky will understand" should be "We pray, the sky will understand".

Other than correcting the mistakes in the posted lyrics, I would just like to say this is an amazing song, and my favorite off the album :)

I'm thinking the song might be seen from the perspective of the grapes, making Maynard the powerful, rainmaking entity the song is directed at. His farm is in Arizona and probably gets a lot of it's "rainfall" from a river or a water reservoir. The lyrics says 'relieve us', I find it likely that it would be 'relieve me' if seen from a human perspective.

Killer song, killer album.

If you've ever lived in Arizona, you'd idenitfy better with this song. I think he is actually singing about the monsoon weather. How it only comes in the hottest part of the year.
