| Xiu Xiu – Tonite And Today (What Chu Talkin Bout) Lyrics | 11 years ago |
| I've always personally read the "make me see it's my last year" as JS accepting he can't live on memories alone and looking for validation in deciding to end it all, sort of playing off the "when I give in, will it be okay?" line that precedes it. | |
| Kevin Devine – I Could Be With Anyone Lyrics | 12 years ago |
|
Think it's: 'Cause I can talk to anyone Care just enough about her wounded pride Her ballerina dreams and lead foot life Her sugar daddy and his clueless wife And I know that it's not right I just don't always know how or why And: So I can stick to anyone At least for a little while A caffeinated stream of cartoon smiles And conversations sharp and deep A tempting sample of who I could be Without the broken glass that's waiting underneath... |

| Metric – Combat Baby Lyrics | 12 years ago |
|
Hmm. I always thought the last part was: Combat baby! Come back, baby. Combat baby, come back. Fight, fight, fight, fight, fight, fight, fight, fight, baby. Combat baby, come back. How I miss your ranting. Do you miss my all time lows? It just makes more sense to me that way, I guess. |

| Neutral Milk Hotel – Oh Sister Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| Weren't "Oh Sister," "Communist Daughter" and that part at the end of "Oh Comely" originally all supposed to be parts of the same song, hence the similar lyrics and mentions of Rose Wallace Goldaline? | |
| Le Tigre – Much Finer Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| I really think the song is about dealing with feeling feminist burnout while also dealing with the expectations that come with being a woman. In the line "so go tell your friends I'm still a feminist, but I won't be coming to your benefit" it seems like she's saying to some critical (male) person, 'yeah, I believe in feminism, but you're an ass, so fuck you and have a nice day,' but that's just my opinion. | |
| Polaris – Hey Sandy Lyrics | 13 years ago |
|
I always heard the lyrics this way.. took it to be about a boy with a crush on a (neighbor?) girl with a dog: "Can you settle to shoot, baby, or have you picked your target yet? Hey Sandy (Ai yai yai yai!), does your dog bite? (Ai yai yai yai!) Hey, Sandy! Boppin' away; end of speeches, the end of the day. We was only funning, but guiltily, I thought you had it coming." |

| Xiu Xiu – Smear the Queen Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| Think it's about BDSM, an abusive relationship... or maybe about a hate crime? Or maybe it's all these things combined as a kind of metaphor for a emotion. | |
| Beastie Boys – (You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party!) Lyrics | 13 years ago |
|
The Beastie Boys have themselves said that this song is making fun of certain subsets of their audience. As Mike D said: "The only thing that upsets me is that we might have reinforced certain values of some people in our audience when our own values were actually totally different. There were tons of guys singing along to 'Fight for Your Right' who were oblivious to the fact it was a total goof on them." However, hearing the recent Coldplay cover/tribute of the song changed the meaning of the song for me, or rather, added an additional one. I understand now that the song is also about how difficult it is to gain independence from your parents, and try to figure who you are while also trying to survive in the "real" world. |

| Amanda Palmer – Guitar Hero Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| To me, the song is a warning about idealizing/romanticizing people, situations and/or things too much, whether it's soldiers or celebrities (or video games/songs/movies/etc. about them) or just someone you find attractive. It's also a comment on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, school shootings, relationships, the music business, and just celebrity culture in general. The thing with games like Guitar Hero and Call of Duty are that they are *based* in reality, but they *aren't* reality. The saying "The truth is stranger than fiction" definitely applies here. | |
| Why? – Light Leaves Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| Sex/masturbation as a form of suicide/death? It's a great metaphor. | |
| of Montreal – Spiteful Intervention Lyrics | 13 years ago |
|
"The rancor of our last conversation; that forbidden word you've deformed to handicap me, then abuse your advantage. "There's nothing to fight; it's just a bitter fait accompli." "Feels wrong to celebrate; we need to suffer more: face our puerility, ban converts that vitiate, devise new stratagems to disavow our quotidian characters." "Lately I'm rutted in the filth of self-authored agonies that really should fill me with shame, but all I have is this manic energy." |

is there one sweet one that I must reach for, then I'm done? is perfection a place or just a glimpse at hard work's pace? is there one sweet one that I must reach for, then I'm done? is perfection a place or just a glimpse at hard work's pace? is there one sweet one that I must reach for, then I'm done? is perfection a place or just a glimpse at hard work's pace? is there one sweet one that I must reach for, then I'm done? pop on some music trapped in its time mad-man muse brought tears to my face dressed in the form of classical rhyme like the dawn, electrical grace kicked back the fuse, then left like a mime man, your shoes are hard to replace topped off the brew that rushed like a tide here are days when friends pass away accept the news, the weather is mild when loud(?) used to love, cry and play blue from a bruise but able to smile hide your blues and sink in the waves pop on some music trapped in its time mad-man muse brought tears to my face dressed in the form of classical rhyme like the dawn, electrical grace |

|
some corrections: 'And you hope it won't take all afternoon The TV's waiting to talk to you' 'Your alarm clock lies You get to school on time' 'You looked cold still, your collar was high And I tried to talk to you, but you walked right by I don't know which I said then, hello or goodbye Or that we're all trying to be pure But it isn't a very easy thing now, is it, to do?' haunting. |
