It seems that he’s talking about a relationship in terms of seasons—how spring is birth, summer is the prime, autumn is growing old, and winter is death. The relationship isn’t quite dying yet, but it’s definitely losing its steam and the vitality it once had, and he wishes he could recapture what it was like before. “So make, again A dime-a-dozen love clichés” There’s something desperate about these lines, as if he’s willing to try anything to save this relationship, even saying cliché romantic phrases in hopes that the words will help them remember and bring that spark back. He’s fighting to keep the relationship alive and well, and there’s something about that which just makes it more heart-breaking in my opinion. He’s not just lying down and accepting it (at least not at first); he’s fighting and trying so hard to make it work, and all his efforts can’t do a thing. Then there’s the acceptance. “Just find the moment,” he says, still trying, denying the reality, but then he finally realizes: “It’s not coming back again.” I think it’s important that the line “Your hair, it danced in summer wind” is in past tense compared to the other lines—it danced in summer, but no longer does now that it’s autumn, and he knows this. “I don’t really know The meaning, cause, and attributes of fall” For such simple lines, there’s SO much going on. The word “fall” works on so many levels. Literally, it can mean the season of fall and their relationship in terms of the season, but it can also be read as the fall into love—and consequently the fall OUT of it. I think they’re possibly the saddest lines in the song, too. He knows something’s wrong, but doesn’t know why it’s happening or what led up to it; he wants to fix it, but doesn’t know how. All he can really do is watch the relationship continue to fall apart. This has to be one of the most beautiful (and sad) songs I have ever heard. Not only does it just sound great, musically, but the lyrics are strong enough to stand on their own. There’s so much going on, emotionally, and then combined with the imagery and the metaphors of the seasons...gah! Just beautiful. I can't wait for more from this guy. |

| BT – Blue Skies Lyrics | 18 years ago |

The lyrics above are severely off. Here are the correct ones: Oh, yeah… ‘Cause blue skies overhead Blue skies in my head All the time clocks are marching Soldiers sob And I say, let’s go, let’s go, let’s go To this magic wonder show And I’m walking in Crawling in Certain all I’m seeing I, I, I, I I, I’m seeing… Blue skies are in my head I said, blue skies are in my head I said, blue skies are in my head I said, blue skies… (blue skies) Touch rocks lazy, I can see-saw I can see it on my lullabies Just when she sings, I can see-saw I can see it on my lullabies You can go just where she’s going on a… Blue skies are in my head I said, blue skies are in my head I said, blue skies are in my head I said, blue skies… (blue skies) Need a little joy Need a little joy Need a little joy Could I have a baby boy? Need a little joy Need a little joy Need a little joy sometimes Need a little joy Got my baby boy Got my blue skies Blue skies Oh, I said, blue skies over my head Blue skies are in my head I said, blue skies are in my head I said, blue skies are in my head I said, blue skies are in my head I said, blue skies (oh) are in my head I said, blue skies are in my head I said, blue skies… (blue skies)… (The song was part of the "Party of Five" soundtrack, and Tori Amos did the vocals for the track, by the way. I'm not sure if she wrote the lyrics, but they do seem like her style, so it wouldn't surprise me.) As for the song, it's a strange, non-stereotypical feel-good song to me. Things aren't cloudy and stormy for her--she's got clear blue skies. Pretty ambiguous and/or hard to decipher, but it's a kickin' song. One of my first exposures to BT, and it left a damn good impression on me. :) |

| Depeche Mode – Get the Balance Right! Lyrics | 18 years ago |

For me, I immediately heard it as realistic advice a parent would give their child nowadays. You know—life is not all honey and roses. Understand the views of others, compromise, don’t compromise yourself, and sometimes lying is preferable or even necessary. Help others, but don’t give more than you can afford to. If you reach the top, don’t get a big head, because what goes up must come down, etc., etc., etc. Very much growing up and learning a healthy balance of optimism and cynicism, and so on. (And I think the video, particularly the beginning, really emphasizes this). There does seem to be a streak of social conformity as well (and it isn’t VERY different, but I hear it as “don’t tend this way, don’t tend that way”). On a side note, I absolutely love the samplings in this song. It’s like a surprise every time I listen—this time around I heard a squeezy toy, and I have no shame in admitting that it completely made my day. |

| Depeche Mode – Halo Lyrics | 18 years ago |

This song (specifically the previously-mentioned Goldfrapp remix) will always hold a special place in my heart as being the song that really kicked off my interest and eventual love with Depeche Mode, and since the original has been discussed, I think I’ll instead talk about the remix. I immediately fell in love with this mix—a big compliment to Goldfrapp, because I generally can’t stand remixes. But with this mix, they do what I think should really be the point of remixes—they bring something new to the song, an aspect that wasn’t there in the original mix (such that it actually causes me to interpret the same song differently, depending on which version I’m listening to). With “Halo” the beat gets stripped down and the result is something very atmospheric and even tragic. Whereas I interpret the original in much the same way the other posters before me have, with the remix, it’s a bit of a different story with the couple in subject. They fell in love, and due to circumstances of some sort (bad timing, distance, etc.), ended up apart. Their lives developed separately, they both settled into other relationships (or at the very least she did), and then they somehow come upon each other again, after all those years, and that love gets rekindled. There’s still an element of suggestion, even entreaty on his part, definitely, but with a female voice added in, we get her side of the story too, in a sense, and she wants it as much as he does. I can just see him catching her at home when her husband’s away (maybe at work, or if you want to get even more dramatic, off with possible kids), looking at each other while he stands at her door, and there she is, looking back at him, and with each second she leans closer to the idea of just packing a suitcase and leaving with him, then and there. God, I love this song (both the remix and the original). Simple as that. (P.S. I also love the video for this song, especially the part at the end when Dave gets rejected—call me sadistic, but it just made my day when I first saw it, to see a video where the front-man DOESN’T end up getting the girl, hehe.) |

| Fall Out Boy – Dance, Dance Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
(Am I the only one who hears it as “and these are the LIES you love to lead”?) For anyone who’s done any ballroom/Latin dancing, where there’s a definite lead (man) and follow (woman), it kind of puts an interesting spin on it, like she’s the one with the control, since she’s the one leading in this situation. As for hearing it as “lies” instead of “lives” (whether that’s what it is or isn’t), I think “lies” has more impact—especially when coupled with “why don’t you show me a little bit of spine you’ve been saving for his mattress” (which I think is a wonderful little phrase). Like he’s telling her to just get the nerve to come straight with him—stop lying about things and/or “dancing” around the subject. I only want sympathy In the form of you Crawling into bed with me Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t hear these lines as sad or desperate so much as angry and bitter—like he’s saying, “Only say you’re sorry if you’re coming back to me,” because otherwise the phrase is meaningless (assuming you read the song as a relationship falling apart because of or therefore leading to her cheating on him). And someone mentioned it before (sorry I can’t recall exactly) but I agree with what they said about the lines “Tonight it’s it can‘t get much worse versus no one should ever feel like” being a struggle between feeling sad/dejected and angry. As for me, I’m hardly a Fall Out Boy fan (and avoid MTV like the plague), but I do like this song (and though I like the original well enough, it’s the Lindbergh Palace Remix I’m addicted to). It’s certainly not the deepest song in existence, but so what? Lyrically it may not be spectacular, but (other than the “how misery loved me” part and the arguable overuse of “dance”) the words aren’t cringe-worthy, and even have a few interesting turns of phrases. It’s fun and ever-so-damn catchy, and while I’m not the clubbing type by any means, it makes me want to dance, or at least go driving fast on the highway. |
