| The Weakerthans – Virtute the Cat Explains Her Departure Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
This song absolutely OBLITERATES me. I am not prone to emotional outbursts, and the first few times I heard this song, I didn't really listen to the lyrics, but got the impression that the singer was comparing himself to a stray cat in a metaphor about love. When I REALLY listened to it though, and read the lyrics, my heart broke violently. He puts the whole story in such simple terms, but really conveys how it must feel for an animal that runs away; strange new surroundings, and slowly forgetting it's previous life, except for how happy it was. |

| The Decemberists – The Perfect Crime #1 Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| A little strange hearing Colin drop two F bombs in one song, after being relatively clean in every other song (save for a few pieces of 'regional dialect' and timely crude words. | |
| The Decemberists – After the Bombs Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
A touching ballad of love found in dire conditions; a flower that blooms in the fires of war, tempered by trials, and finally let to flourish after the war machine finally dies. After the bombs, the lovers enjoy a momentary reprieve to share a dance in the early dawn, forgetting their hardships, if at least until the bombs begin all over again. I cannot listen to this song without being overwhelmed, especially thinking about the love of my own life. That Hammond organ is just plucks at all the right heartstrings. |

| The Decemberists – Grace Cathedral Hill Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I get the impression that this song is after a funeral. The lighting of a white candle in a cathedral, the imagery of 'dust' , 'bones', 'stone', and 'decay', as well as mention of tears, and comforting a loved one. Also, the quote "Some way to greet the year" seems like a sarcastic comment, that the death ruined the beginning of the year, and what should have been a beautiful day. Finally the mention of the world being long for you, seems like the singer consoling the girl, telling her that she will not die any time soon, but neither can she controll the flow of life and death. all in all a very deep song! |
