| It's not even "sorta" by System of a Down. It's by Serj Tankian, the singer of System of a Down, but the rest of the members were not involved. | |

| The significance is not just that the farm will not be there for the son to enjoy. When families lost their farms, they lost their way of making money. They were terrified that they would not be able to feed their children. | |
| Steve Miller Band – The Stake Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Ha, I think this song is about bondage. "I'll take you over," "tied at the stake." it's rough, kinky sex. And maybe the "four leaf clover" means he's "getting lucky." | |

When I first heard this song I thought of Hamlet by William Shakespeare. The line "let your mother pray" reminds me of "Let not thy mother lose her prayers, Hamlet." Throughout the play, Hamlet is indignant about the way his nation, Denmark, is being corrupted by his mother and stepfather. This is parallel to the indignation in the song toward the attitude of Americans. (sitting around all day, being ungrateful like I explained in my other comment.) "My girl, you know, she lashes out at me sometimes, And I just fucking kick her, and Ooo Baby, she's O.K." In the play, Hamlet is in love with a girl named Ophelia, but one day when she tries to tell him that she cares for him as well, he calls her a whore and tells her he never said he loved her. "Well I'm not there all the time you know Some people, some people, some people, Call it insane, yeah they call it insane," In Hamlet, the title character pretends to be crazy as part of his plan for revenge on his stepfather, who killed his father. In the process, he actually goes insane, but is sometimes able to act rationally in order to further confuse everyone else. (I'm not there all the time, you know) "I've killed everyone" Everyone in Hamlet dies in the end except for one character. Enough about Hamlet. If you've read, seen, or performed the play I suggest you consider other things that relate it to this song. ... A recurring theme in this song is the image of masculinity. "I bought a gun... it's cute," "I play Russian roulette everyday, a man's sport," "My girl, you know, she lashes out at me sometimes, And I just fucking kick her, and Ooo Baby, she's O.K." |

| the part from "i sit in my desolate room... to ...but i'm feeling better" is about angsty teenagers who are depressed when they have plenty to be happy about. They call their bedrooms "desolate" when they really have never experienced being in a desolate place. Also, they are selfish. (I've killed everyone... but I'm feeling better) | |

I am a fan of both Green Day and GnR. I really don't like any of the songs on American Idiot, however, and I definitely like Civil War better than American Idiot. But, American Idiot will still be relevant in the future because the only thing directly related to the current president is the "redneck agenda" part, and we have had, and probably will have, many "redneck" presidents. besides, many songs written about the state of the world in a specific time are still relevant later on. For example, Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Run through the Jungle." History repeats itself, after all. also, I think the "everybody's fightin for their promised land" line is a reference to the conflict in the middle east with jews, muslims, and christians all claiming Jerusalem, but then it could also be applied to other situations. |

| System of a Down – Deer Dance Lyrics | 18 years ago |

i think this song is about the brutality of U.S. authority figures both here and in third world countries. "we can't afford to be neutral on a moving train" This is sung sarcastically like he's mocking someone. I think it's something that war hawks would say about war. For instance, in the Vietnam War, they may have thought of communism like a moving train that would move into Vietnam, then other countries and become an unstoppable force. I have seen pictures on the internet of U.S. soldiers playing with Iraqi children and doing other "peaceful" things in other countries, so maybe the whole "rubber bullet kisses" part is about the contradictory actions of the U.S. military. The title "deer dance" is probably a reference to Native Americans in some way. Serj often says that his religion is the same as that of the trees and the Native Americans. To RudeMinnesotan: your comment was not useful to anyone. all you said was that you liked the song. No one who doesn't know you cares that you like the song. However, some of the essay-length comments were very useful. |
