I think Pitchfork got this one completely wrong.
This is layered song for sure but as far as the bottled message to the press is concerned I hear it as a sincere (if somewhat complicated) feeling of forgiveness, not a "funny put-down" << Pitchfork.
P4k is so odd sometimes. Do they get this record or don't they? Do they really appreciate the "essential complexity" of Bejar's music or are they just being placating?
OK I'm just pissed that somehow this is 1.2 points short of the PERFECTION achieved by Kanye.
I know, fuck pitchfork. But ARRRGH this record is SOOOO GOOOOD |

Why? – These Few Presidents Lyrics
|
Hopefully some of you noticed that this astounding lyric:
two first names and an ampersand
embroidered proudly on a kitchen towel
you're a beautiful and violent word
with the skinny neck of a chinese bird
in a fading ancient painting
Is merely a description of an ampersand (&) than only Joni Wolf could pen. See the skinny neck?
God I love this album. |

definitely my current favorite, there's something about this record that reveals more with each permutation. |

The National – Rest of Years Lyrics

Pretty sleeve-hearted if you ask me: Berninger is depressed about his loss, and pissed at himself for being depressed, and depressed becuase he's pissed off at himself. This is pretty much the theme of every song on the album. |

The National – Cardinal Song Lyrics

I definitely see this as a post-relationship creation. I agree with Tom Selleck cardinal eyes meaning the deepset dark eyes of the red cardinal. The National often uses bird names as poetic devices. |

Thank you so much for the translation! The song is of course beautiful on its own but it has so much more depth to me now. I can't stop listening to this album. |

My good sir,
although I appreciate your emphatic, somewhat repetitive responses, I question the sensibility of your hypothesis. Is it one that, in fact, you even have faith in?
Obviously, the etymologies of the possible words have been taken into consideration on this end, but don't you find the connotations of "done" much more apropos in this case? Certainly "dumb" has the capability of describing such a muted presence as a dead father, but a play on words as you put it, of that sort, would in most likelihood take into account the more common semantics of the term.
Thusly, no. |

Talk Talk – New Grass Lyrics

Every time I revisit this album I can't help nominating it as perhaps the greatest of all time. In general, if you're reading the lyrics to this song on this website, you probably agree. At least that will be my assumption.
It's strange how oddly narrative and familiar these songs become, even with Mark Hollis speaking in tongues almost entirely throughout. Like consuming some great tragic novel through your auditory canal. Maybe this is what it felt like to follow Christ - lost in some grand, haunting mystery, esoteric yet personal. I believe Astral Weeks had some part in this effort, but both works seem to born of the same subtle energy this song captures (channels?) so well. I may sound like a crazy person at this point but we're never gonna survive unless |

I feel like I'm constantly thinking: The name of this website is song mmmmeanings; but no one really cares I huh. Well Shearwater anyway is a project I think demands immediate analysis. Few songwriters are as cryptic or as pithy. |

ALRIGHT,
I've had enough of this shit it's time for a linguistics lesson up in this bitch so listen up bitches: it sounds like "dumb" because when the bilabial of the next word ("but") comes in it closes the open "n" sound which modifies the intended phoneme. It's okay to try this at home kids!
Whether that's intentional on AC's part I don't know but come on, "dumb"? What is this a schoolyard taunt? No this is. Welcome to the big leagues. |
