There�s a drumming noise inside my head That starts when you�re around The Drumming noise to me, is her thoughts and feelings, collated into one mass, the drumming noise. It's basically desire, but more than just sexual, it's emotional as well. It's the sickening feeling you get when you see someone you utterly adore. I ran to a tower where the church bells chime I hoped that they would clear my mind They left a ringing in my ear But that drum�s beating loud and clear There are references to the church, and religion in this song. To me, that's about repressed emotions and urges, the side of love that's held back, and not allowed free. She goes to the church, to religion, trying to 'clear her mind', in an effort to get rid of the drumming sound, the church bells do leave an impression in her head, but the drumming noise is still there despite that. Louder than sirens Louder than bells Sweeter than heaven And hotter than hell This means her desire is far larger and louder than anything else she could ever hear, nothing could match it. 'Sweeter than Heaven, and hotter than hell', ties into religion again, this would be better than heaven, but possibly more sinful than hell? I run to the river and dive straight in I pray that the water will drown out the din But as the water fills my mouth it couldn�t wash the echoes out She either tries to cleanse herself in the river, or drown herself, whichever interpretation you prefer. But despite that, the echoes of the desire is still there, no matter what she does. I swallow the sound and it swallows me whole Till there�s nothing left inside my soul As empty as that beating drum But the sound has just begun Eventually she gives herself up to the noise, to the desire, till it's eroded everything else away, and she's just shell. The obsession had destroyed her life and herself, but it still continues. Despite everything. That's my interpretation anyway, I like this song :) |

This song (to me) is about love. And I do believe it's a love song. But there is nothing pretty about this kind of love. It's about desperation, it's about loss, and the possibility of loss, and what that could do to him. It will rip him apart, but he will do it despite it, he will continue, even if it kills him, which it probably will. For me. There is a person, who I couldn't live without. Not romantic love, but they are my rock. They've saved me from the brink of death, pulled me from the deep black pit of depression. But it's not reciprocated, and there's no way it will ever will be, it's impossible. That in itself, often pushes me to the pit of depression. So there's this very damaging relationship (to me anyways), where this will hurt me, but I can't be without it, and I wouldn't be without it. Almost relates to another NIN song, - Something I can Never Have. Regardless... I love this song. It is just powerful and raw. Not watered down pop trash, he sings with his soul, and it comes pouring through. |

What I love about the NIN lyrics, is that you can interpret them to suit your meanings. Listening to the song reminds me of losing your identity, fading away, and being absorbed by the crowd. The first first reminds me of almost a military general yelling it to a solider.'head down' - head down, and be quiet sorta thing know your place don't ever forget - Know your place, you are one of those forgetables. Then it enters the chorus (which I love). and this is not my face and this is not my life - almost disbelief in what he's become. He refuses to believe that he's ended up here, ended up like this. The great thing is, that 'this' can be anything you want. Any place the listener has ended up. Drugs, Depression, loneliness. The song can be tailored to suit the listener this is all a dream and none of you are real - still, refuses to believe this all i'll give anything - at the end of the chorus, it's almost a confession. This is real, this is what it's like now, and he'd give anything to change it. Fantastic song. I love it. |

I love this song, but why Muse, must you have such ambigious lyrics? The 'I just don't care if it's real / That won't change how it feels' verse are to me, almost saying 'This may be fake, it may be created, but it still feels like it's real, it still hurts' - Like a relationship that might be delusional, or I see it as someone longing for the other person to love them, and even if they don't, it still feels like they do, and this person will still love them The 'Shroud' and 'Glass needle in the hay' are about something being hidden, or hard to find. 'The Sun forgives the cloud' - What does the cloud do against the sun? Covers it? Like a shroud, so those two link together. So the person is like something that hides or covers the truth. 'And you can't resist' - The other person is toying with them 'Making me feel eternally Missed' - I'm not sure about this line. I think 'Missed' could have more than one implication here. The 'Eternally' part may link to how they will always love this person, to eternity. Overall, it is an ambigious song. I think it about someone adoring an other, as if they loved them back, and they know nothing will ever happen, but they keep clinging on. The other person can't resist ignoring them, or toying with them, and the person will always feel like this, feel 'Eternally Missed' I just love this song, one of the best b-sides, a close runner up to Fury, and Hyper Chondriac Music. |

I love Hyper Music, and it's my 'angry song'. But I listened to this, and it's just as good. The two are a pair. I agree with lauradonaghy up there. Hyper Music is the argument, the anger right at the time, but I listen to Hyper Chrondriac Music, and it's most old anger... That's disapated, or slowed, but it's still there. Like... long term hate for someone, when you've run out of the energy to be angry-angry at them (when it was like Hyper Music), and this is what's left. I LOVE this song, and it's the best on the Hullabaloo album in my opinion. |

Out of all her songs, this is my favourite, I can't believe no-one's commented on it yet. Heh, this song could've been written for me, it's scary. It's about unrequited love, but when it gets so so painful, it's hard to cope anymore. It's a love thats incredibly destructive and shameful to the person - 'Love is killing me'. Also, as the person kept clinging onto the hope that the love would be returned, she's almost is breaking her own heart, cause she clings to false hope, and it hurts. The 'Save Me' verses are just a cry out, to anyone for someone to just save them. Self-explanatory really. I love the pain, hurt and desperation in this song, it portrays the emotions beautifully. Definitely my favourite. |

The first part is perfect love, which was taken too fast, and needs to be slowed down, pretty easy to see. The next part is someone telling the other that they don't want the relationship to be ruined, they don't want go down that track of bitterness, and doesn't want things to end that way. What I like about this song (and it's hidden track) is that the hidden track is very similar to the first (intro) song 'Life in Technicolor' so you can just listen to the album on loop, and the two ends blend into each other :) |

I don't interpret this song about being about Sex... then it wouldn't really mean that much to me, I'm sorta a bit young for that yet :P God, Chris Martin's lower register is just... weird... Good, but strange... like unusual to hear him sing that low, he can though :) You could also interpret it being that he's waiting for her to say yes for a relationship to start in the first place - 'when we started we had high hopes' that could be the intial flirting/hoping stage etc etc. 'If you'd only, only say Yes' - Just say Yes to the relationship, cause he's getting tired of being lonely. I know you can see the sex aspect of it, but I see it my way :P |

Grow up This isn't a reviewing site anyway, it's for discussing the song meanings and the lyrics I like this new album, it's very different from their previous stuff, but a little different is good sometimes :) other it'd just get boring if they recycled the same old songs over and over. My view on it. This song is vague with it's meaning, but that's why I love coldplay, they leave you to make the interpretations. I think it's about someone searching for something, a truth or meaning, 'to see god in their own way' it describes their journey. Meaningful for someone who is searching for some truth or meaning in their life. |

For the first part, I'll agree with legoman163 up there. The first part is about memories of people who are either dead, or have gone and left you, and people always say that 'You'll live on in our memories' but this person has became so grief-stricken, and absorbed with the memories, he's 'fallen under the spell' and is living in the past with them as well, and not living life in the present, to the full, and hasn't moved on from the loss 'Time is so short and I’m sure There must be something more' - is maybe his more logical view saying 'Life is too short' but also him asking himself 'is there anything more to life now that these people are dead and gone?' The final part of the song, I'm not so sure about it, it's certainly Chris addressing the dead, or the ghosts. It might also refrence to the fact that 'those who are dead are not dead' cause their in his head, so the ghosts can't be free of the earth, and get to heaven, but they can forever be remembered by the people that loved them which will be almost a compensation, 'but you made it close' You didn’t get to heaven but you made it close |

It's an odd song, and it's meaning doesn't leap out of the page to me, but it also means that you can interpret the song to suit yourself My view is that it's a song about defeat, and being beaten, but not in a negative way, the first two verses are 'Yes, I've been beaten, hurt, I'm lost, but I'm not defeated, I'm not all gone' It's also like a statement against the other person who's accusing them of this, like 'you may laugh now, but soon the same thing will happen to you' I listen to it for defiance, quiet rebellion. And I adore the heavy drums beat in the album version, absolutely adore. |

This song is very very differant. Many of his songs are. It is sad and hopeless, but it is also slightly reassuring. I think the meaning is similar to what Sarah Stagedive said. A bit like 'We're all so screwed, there is nothing we can do, so in the mean time, lets 'Relax, and take it easy'' There are also serveral differant opinions in the song, theres the 'We're all so screwed' and the accepting side 'Well if it's going to happen, theres no point worrying about it' This song is haunting and sad, but it's also comforting at the same time, one of my Favourites. |

I just love this song, it has so many parts to it. But some of it seems contradicting. I do think it is about a breakup. That you have brokenup and probably she doesnt care about him anymore. And the lines ''If you want to live, let live, if you want to go, let go'' to me mean that she just doesn't care anymore. The 2nd to last paragraph, starts with 'In a dream' And earlier in the song she said 'I'm not afraid to dream- to sleep, sleep forever'' So During all that time it may of been perfect in her head, in a dream. But ''guess it wasn't real after all'', she finally relaises it aint perfect. And she's all alone again. And she knows that alone is better than being with the guy. ''remember that all alone is where I belong'' Sorry If this is complicated. I did sorta break it apart and analysis it a bit. The title i think is a reference to the saying ''Up on Cloud Nine'' . That means, sorta up. living in their own lil' world, in a perfect fantasy. |

Very odd song, especially when I first heard this, but I didn't listen all the way to the chorus, and I think the Chorus, really makes this song wonderful, it has an uplifting, yet also hopeful chorus like Chasing Cars and Run have (2 of my all time favourite snow patrol songs) Just listening to any of these give you Hope The Meaning... Well, it is certainly about 2 people who are so far away from each other, and want to be together again, I think Set the Fire to the Third Bar, when I first heard it I thought make Electric Fire, with tempreture setttings, weird, but i know better, but maybe after 3 bars (drinking ppl ones) they got sick sick of not being with each other they torched it? (freaky) I hang my coat up in the first bar There is no peace that I've felt so far The laughter penetrates my silence As drunken men find flaws in science '', first bar to get drunk at to forget? but all they hear is drunk ppl arguing... Their words mostly noises Ghosts with just voices Your words in my memory Are like music to me And the drunk people arguing just make noise, while the sound of each is like music (better obvisous I know) I just love it! I maybe be speaking obsolute gibberish, but I just love it |
