Bluebird - Charles Bukowski there's a bluebird in my heart that wants to get out but I'm too tough for him, I say, stay in there, I'm not going to let anybody see you. there's a bluebird in my heart that wants to get out but I pur whiskey on him and inhale cigarette smoke and the whores and the bartenders and the grocery clerks never know that he's in there. there's a bluebird in my heart that wants to get out but I'm too tough for him, I say, stay down, do you want to mess me up? you want to screw up the works? you want to blow my book sales in Europe? there's a bluebird in my heart that wants to get out but I'm too clever, I only let him out at night sometimes when everybody's asleep. I say, I know that you're there, so don't be sad. then I put him back, but he's singing a little in there, I haven't quite let him die and we sleep together like that with our secret pact and it's nice enough to make a man weep, but I don't weep, do you? |

| me too. what a cleaver song. such beautiful and dark imagery. imaging breaking the neck of a bird. and then being haunted in your dreams by that old familiar tweet tweet tweet. it's like tweedy bird is in your head. | |
| The Cars – Moving In Stereo Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
I think the song is trying to say that everything is inside of your head, and that it is really easy to blow things out of proportion, or get down on your breakdowns, and all you have to do is play with the sound or chance your thinking about the situation, change your head. life is the same life out there, it is just how we perceive it. You might get so down on yourself that the world seems to be mono, but life's the same, I'm right here moving in stereo. It's all on your head. |

OMG the WHOLE SONG gives a a wonderfully decidedly anti-religion vibe. Dave is famous for that and this song continues that tradition. Why I Am, also with anti-religion tones: "I grew from monkey into man, then I crushed fifteen million with a wave of my hand, I grew drunk on water turned into wine, Till I was slave and master at the same damn time" summarizes the last 200,000 years in 4 lines, and does not give a good recalling of the rise of the Christian faith. This song is so dark, primal, and I think, in a word, humanistic. The song starts out, encased in what you think is religion, and then Dave slips you his religion and philosophy, "And naked, you will see, That we are all the same" and "Above all things, If kindness is your king, Then heaven will be yours before you reach your end". Love, when injected into the "dead", those who have no love, no kindness, then makes the "dead" start to squirm and live again. Wonderfully dark imagery. Humanism is a worldview and a moral philosophy that considers humans to be of primary importance. "I'm not perfect, I'm flesh and bone, And I'm exactly what you need" http://newsbusters.org/blogs/tim-graham/2007/11/16/rock-star-dave-matthews-god-more-irritating-santa-claus |

This is such a beautiful song. The persona is singing of a desire not to conform, not to work and just to be in a place where "nothing must be done." He hears far off sounds of others doing work, all those things they feel give life some meaning. He is torn to have to rejoin the real world. He uses the metaphor comparing himself to the trees shaken by the winds. He can't loose the leaves or his feelings of having to conform. He doesn't want to be addicted to a perfumed poison which is work which gives nothing in return. He does not want to lose the wonder of life. He warns of the fisherman who's casting out his line into a dried up river bed which is fruitless work. With these feelings, he feels so alienated. Beautiful |

| Amazing song. Full of wonder and amazement. A Song of love and worship of women and against those who would preach against love. If you have never experienced love, why would you deny it to others? Save your sermons for someone else. Magical. | |
| Dave Matthews Band – Seek Up Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| To addendum my previous comments on this song. It keeps making me think about it. This song is not so much against religion as it is pro-humanist. Dave is trying to put our trust in ourselves, in our own emotions, not to chase treasons (money, god, etc.). We are innocent, our emotions are innocent, life is short. Emotions can vary and be up and down, and we create defense mechanisms to get through life and scary times, but these things aren't evil. Very humanist ideals. | |

Agree with 4T5T6T. Very serious song about religion or actually being agaist religion. When you listen to the song with this meaning in mind, a lot of lyrics come out with very strong meaning: I think he is speaking directly to the man made creation of god when "I'm not going to change my ways just to please you or apease you", look at humanity, 5 billion people, from ashes to ashes. If there is any god to look down upon us, it's' with a mischievous grin, look at him. very powererful gripe agaist god. he is labelling the goals of religion (salvation, forgiveness, etc) these reasons are treasons we are seeking when chasing religon, and forget about them. forget about the guilt religion makes us feel, we are innocent instead (not born with origional sin). this big monster is the god man creates to fight his wars (fears) for him. He is saying that when we bring up strong emotions, this can lead to creating a god figure that we think will protect us, and when we are confronted by this, there is no devil either, and that all religion comes from seeking up emotions and fears. oh my god, I love this song. anyone know the lyrics to the end of the fancy car verse in the 10-22-94 Blue Note Live version from Columbia MO? |

I think the lyrics are from the point of view of a prostitute. It is a very sad song if you read it this way... a prostitute who is very jaded with a bit of an attitude. I’m gonna make it bend and break (She is talking about the John is suppose to meet, probably his dick) She says a prayer before she does the act which is the “good times” in case god doesn’t show and something goes wrong. Through these lyrics she is trying to make things right but it is through her experiences that she can write the song (sort of cry on the couch, all the poets come to life -Thriller). The chorus is the girl flippantly saying bye to the guy, giving him an insincere goodbye and the line so famously delivered in the movie Closer. That line is so awesome, I could see Pete taking that line, creating a character and writing a whole song about it. One night and one more time is the repetitive nature of her business. The second stanza is pretty vague about not seeing the future but seeing the past and mistakes very clearly. (I know where to put all of our mistakes, Every dot com’s refreshing for a journal update –Thriller). Third stanza is key for the prostitute, they think only in making money and crunching numbers. In hotel rooms servicing famous Johns. She has to change who she is before fucking the guy. The liner could be a line of coke for her or the John. The last chorus, Pete echoes in One more night, one more time…. As if she is saying, this is it, just one more time and I’ll quit……. Because of the intro I skipped over this song the last 4 weeks I have been listening to this album. This album has so much depth…… I think they just used this song as part of an intro during the NCAA Basketball finals… Go gadors!!! Their music makes other songs sound watered down. The intensity they put into it is amazing. Their songs are not complex, not complicated, but they use a lot of metaphors, and they are damn catchy, very defiant. The vocals are brash. The music is unapologetic and confident. One of the best albums I have head in a long time. |

This song is about a man's regret and reservations before getting married. After three years, he is thinking about calling the whole thing off and he feels that his fiancee doesn't really know him. These lyrics are very clear. The music is very happy but he lyrics are very sad. The thing that he hates and that he can not define is being a husband. So they end up fighting in public ( so let's cause a scene, clap our hands and stomp our feet or something, yeah something). These are metaphors for infantile fighting because the things couples end up fighting about are almost always infantile). The topics, no one can ever remember later, it is always just something... just something. For him to go on with the wedding, he just has to get over how he feels, how he doesn't think his fiancee knows him, how this whole relationship has changed him. The second verse is about the wedding. Again they are fighting about things like the invite list. He just wants to make a list and it should be easy. She wants to make the wedding elaborate and he just wants to go straight down the ilse (which he thinks is "going down") The bridge is about him trying to reconcile his feeling for being single and not getting married to the benefits of getting married. He is scared to go out and be married, he is pissed off at his friends for putting doubt into his head about this marriage. These lyrics are years beyond the ages of the writers. They are the most beautiful lyrics I have heard in a while. They rival Peter Gabriel lyrics. |
