Just to clarify and mash together all the comments that start with "in the version I have" this was only ever recorded once, and that was live. December 5, 1998 in Athens, Georgia. It was Chris Bilheimer's birthday party. He did the cover for In the Aeroplane Over the Sea. He also did all the covers for REM up to that point, and I believe he's been doing cover art for Green Day lately. Anyway, this song kind of marked the beginning of the end of Neutral Milk Hotel since Jeff was writing songs like this and it was such a departure from the sort of dust bowl penny arcade carnival sound they had in studio. |

This is on the 2007 EP "Arcs Across the City" which I believe was the first recording after Kelly joined the band. Maybe somebody else can correct me if there are demos I don't have. I know she wasn't in "We Left You Sleeping and Gone Now." |

My apologies for the two wrong lines. They have been corrected. I would have done it sooner but I didn't think to check the comments after the first weeks. Thanks for clearing things up! |

I've changed the lyrics to Isle of Wight unless somebody can prove me original transcription. I was using a pair of Shure E3Gs at the time, and heard call of why. Still hear it, but I'll trust what the booklet, which I don't own, says. By the way, this was the first site to get the lyrics for this track. If they were in the sleeve, couldn't you have submitted them a lot easier? I had a hell of a time transcribing percussionist succession words. |

You can find this on the Unknown Pleasures bootleg/EP. Very different track, I didn't like it much at first. But yes, its just a version of Mascara. |

I completely agree the Sawdust version is atrocious compared to the original. Made me question the entire album, to be honest. Vocals timing and tone just seem way off. Shouldn't mess with a good thing. |

Just throwing out another possibility for the 3 kinds of yes. It's probably shoot snort and smoke like was suggested earlier. But before I read that I thought it could be sex drugs and rock and roll. |

I think there are three characters in the song. I, the narrator, he, the singer or band member, and you, the person being sung to. Notice how the first verses are in the first person narrative? Serenade me with rocks. I put a whip to the kick drum. My orchestra.
Then the last two verses are the opposite style. He plays piano with fistfuls. And the even better example, he's impaling the front row, fighting fire with arrows. It's like the polar opposite. Instead of rock music, this guy is fighting that fire. The arrows are probably cupid's arrows, implying a love ballad.
So I don't think it's a bad guess, to say he's trying to escape memories with music, just that it doesn't account for the different uses of I and he. Somebody is reading into it way too much. Probably myself.
By the way, does anybody have a better idea for the line currently "Of broken Belvedere crystal?" I couldn't really come up with anything better. Does that even make any sense? Maybe "velvet and crystal?" Tell me what you think and I'll change it if need be. |

Definitely a track about revenge. He knows somebody is coming for him, even though it's in the past. I assume that he's a changed man, but knows that doesn't matter. Based on the line "I'm gonna take up the Steinway" which is a brand of piano. I had a hard time transcribing that line, because I was thinking it was two separate words, as in the way of the Stein. Then I remembered Steinway and Sons from school and it all made sense.
Great song, love the Western feel to it. |

I believe its:
theres a room for the trouble and there's lovers to be had
those walls will make sinners out of such lovely lads
scaling the corridors for maidens in the maze
and in the anomaly you'll slip into familiar ways |

Drove does sound a lot better now, I'll change that for sure. The call of why/olive white is still open for debate though.
This wasn't easy to transcribe, but I apologize for the obvious joy mistake. Thanks :) |

You mean on the album?? That's a "hidden track" and considered a different song. You're looking for "Sermons V The Gospel." |

You're joking, right?? Adams is Samuel Adams, the dock referring the Boston Tea Party. Only an Arsenal fan would put Tony Adams up there with Beethoven and Nelson Mandela. |
