Mind's Eye Lyrics
What's it take to make the dime drop
All these kids they think they're quick on the draw
Always shootin' at outlaws
I'm busy keeping my Colt cocked
I'm gonna know you when you finally come, 'cause I got you in my mind's eye
I got you in my mind's eye
I'm gonna take up the Steinway
Waitin' for the bullet that I'll never see come
I'm gonna start me a new way
I'm puttin' up with you, lie awake
Calling me out to the middle of the street
Oh, I've got you in my mind's eye
I got you in my mind's eye
Oh, I got you in my mind's eye
My day might be coming, but your's is coming first
I'll knock you out of your day lights
And when you come for me some night
You better bring a shovel, be expecting the worst
'cause I got you in my mind's eye
I got you in my mind's eye
Oh, I've got you in my mind's eye
I got you in my mind's eye
All these kids they think they're quick on the draw
Always shootin' at outlaws
I'm busy keeping my Colt cocked

i'm not sure because i can't find the lyrics sheet, but i think it's "i'm putting up with you lightweights." but yeah, this song is probably josh ritter's most badass song yet, i love it.
Definitely a track about revenge. He knows somebody is coming for him, even though it's in the past. I assume that he's a changed man, but knows that doesn't matter. Based on the line "I'm gonna take up the Steinway" which is a brand of piano. I had a hard time transcribing that line, because I was thinking it was two separate words, as in the way of the Stein. Then I remembered Steinway and Sons from school and it all made sense.
Great song, love the Western feel to it.
Has anyone else noticed this song completely rips off London Calling by The Clash? The first time I heard it, I actually thought it was a cover. What do think goes through someone's mind when they are plaigarizing one of the most famous songs in Rock history? Is it; "Maybe no one will notice?"
Funny enough, I downloaded both of these songs at the same time, and so I heard them in a fairly short proximity when I was listening to my Recently Added playlist. The opening beats are VERY similar--so similar I couldn't tell them apart when they started playing. However, I feel like they're just slightly different enough in rhythm, and very different in tone, not to be a rip-off. I doubt the similarity was intentional.

But yeah, pretty bad-ass song. Love him.

I like to think of this song as another Historical Conquest i.e. a song about a woman. It's an aggressive kind of situation, for sure.
Infinitepet is right, I think, he's saying "I'm puttin' up with you lightweights" Also I think he's saying "I'm gonna take it up the sly way" not "Steinway" think about it in the context of the following line "Waitin' for the bullet that I'll never see come" if you don't see it coming that means the person who shot you was being sly
But it sounds much more like Steinway, Steinway & Sons being a manufacturer of pianos. The line 'gonna take up the Steinway waitin' for the bullet I'll never see come' meaning that he'll pass the time learning the piano, possibly implying that it will be quite some time.
