| Kamelot – Mourning Star Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| I'm fairly sure it's written from a soldier's point of view; many of the lines are about the horrors of war, or the desperation they inspire (cf. the old aphorism "there are no atheists in foxholes".) | |

Lemminkainen, reckless hero, Also known as Kaukomieli, Stood beside his mother, combing Out his sable locks and musing, Brushing down his beard, debating, Steadfast still in his decision, Quickly hurls his brush in anger, Hurls it to the wall opposing, Gives his mother final answer, These the words that Ahti uses: "Dire misfortune will befall me, Some sad fate will overtake me, Evil come to Lemminkainen, When the blood flows from that hair-brush, When blood oozes from those bristles." (http://altreligion.about.com/library/texts/kalevala/bl_12.htm) Silent Waters is a reference to the legend of Lemminkainen in the Finnish national epic, the Kalevala. My limited understanding, based on reading from the above link to a translation of the Kalevala, is as follows: Lemminkainen's wife Kyllikki breaks a vow she makes to her husband, and angrily he goes off to war ("Weaving the Incantation") (during which he shows that his singing is also quite bewitching - "Towards and Against"). Then he desires to marry a daughter of Louhi; Louhi assigns him various impossible tasks to accomplish first, including the killing of the swan that lives in the river of the underworld ("Enigma", cover art); he is killed by the river's shepherd, who slays him with a serpent, in the attempt ("The White Swan"). His mother, learning of his fate, goes to the river, and with a divinely-forged rake, dredges Lemminkainen's body from the river ("Silent Waters"). |

Oops, sorry, "Red with their own blood". I know this song is about Tarja, but I don't think this song is necessarily about Tuomas _loving_ Tarja, more about how her attitude toward the music had apparently changed, etc. |

| I think "love denied" is a clever grammatical ambiguity; aside from meaning "the friendship would die if the love was denied", it could also mean "the friendship would die if exposed to denied love". | |

Minor corrections to the chorus: So many dreams [were] broken and so much [was] sacrificed Was it worth the ones we loved and had to leave behind So many years have [passed] toward a noble land of lies Will all our sins be justified? My favorite song from the album. |

| Dark Tranquillity – Format C: For Cortex Lyrics | 19 years ago |

This song seems to me to be about resisting brainwashing, especially from society. This comes out in the verses There is no need for you to start revolutions I don't want you to talk to the minions Just show me a brand new face an open mind against a dying race and In time all your questions will be answered Not what you hoped for, not what you dreamed All preconceptions crumble This is particularly supported by the title; see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disk_formatting Additionally confirming Ddadutta's comment: Stanne whispers (though loudly) "Format C: for Cortex" around 3:39-3:45. |
