The Butterfly Effect – Reach Lyrics 12 years ago
Gotta think this song isn't specifically about a romantic relationship. First clue is in the chorus- using 'we' and then 'you' leads to the conclusion there must be a third party involved. Second and more telling clue is the video clip for the song, which is a montage of old pictures and videos of boys in groups and pairs, mucking up and having fun the best way they know. This song is about your mates.

I believe this song is about having a friend who is struggling with depression. This song is about wanting to protect the people you love from committing suicide.

Whilst the verses suggest the friend has already died, the chorus (in present tense) is more of a plea to the friend to pull through the bad times with their mates' help. It's almost consoling, begging. It feels as though, despite the desperate attempts, the friend is slipping away from grasp. This is all imagery we use to describe depression.

'We've been trying to reach you / We all fall down like this sometimes'

The key symbolic references in these lyrics relate to dreaming. In particular, the 'fields', which also stands as a metaphor for death (commonly used in literature). There seems to be an association with bad dreams and the depression that ends in the longing for death.

'These fields alive with fire and ashes / Inside these fields we'll find oceans of ashes'

'I'm walking through your fields / of broken flowers / They fall upon my face / like tears for hours'

Another look at the lyrics, and something else becomes apparent. There is a focus in the verses on the narrator being troubled by his dreams. If you see this in the context of the first meaning I've drawn from the song (about the narrator's friend who has committed suicide), then you begin to wonder if the narrator himself is revealing he too will inevitably commit suicide.

First he dreams of his friend, and enjoys them because it feels like he has his friend back, even if he's saddened by awaking:

'These dreams are all I've ever wanted'

'Still water cages, I'm hoping / In these dreams to me you'll come'

By the end of the song, he's dreaming the same sad things about death ('I'm walking through your fields...'). Near the end, there's 'I'm trying' on it's own, stressing the sentiment, which could imply that 'it' isn't working.

Lastly, listening to the chorus again, you hear 'We all fall down like this sometimes' followed immediately by 'trying to reach you', which has been repeated but cut down. Thus:

'We all fall down sometimes trying to reach you'

When you loose a friend to depression, a cycle is created, and it could pull you down too.

The song ends in a definite, 'We all fall down.'

It's an amazing song, and in my mind, a powerful message about looking after your mates and making sure they pull through the shitty times. I know I've certainly had that conversation with the people I love. The line, 'Just keep holding my hand because I'm trying to reach you!' 'I'm never letting you go because I'm dying to keep you!' rings so loudly in my ears. Can you imagine clinging to someone, begging them not to go, not letting them out of your sight? Telling someone, 'If you kill yourself, then I'll kill myself too, I fucking swear it.'

Actually, just on the line 'I'm still looking for these angels in the snow';

I made the comment that this means the narrator is looking for help externally. However I'm second guessing this now. Snow angels are something that you make yourself by laying down in the snow and waving your arms (thus creating "wings"). So maybe the narrator is searching for the strength within himself to help him pull through and heal.

I personally believe the song is about the push and pull mentally that someone who self-harms has when it comes to having people know about what they do. That is, sometimes cutting can be a silent cry for help, reaching out to loved ones when you don't know what to say, and sometimes the compulsion of cutting can make you feel so disgusted with yourself that you want to hide it from the world. Also, it can be hard taking advice from people around you who have found out about your self-harming -- you may feel embarrassed, or alternatively, angry at their ignorance/naivety, lack of empathy or just general poor methods of dealing with the situation.

My clues are as following...

"With the absence of eye, I can start to bleed again" -- He wants to cut when and where he's sure he won't be caught.

"And as it falls from your mouth it seems that you needed it more" -- Someone finds out and confronts him, but it seems to him that they only talked to him because they are obligated and would feel bad about themselves otherwise.

"Get the fuck out, stay the fuck out / It makes me sick" -- He rejects the comfort offered him, and may feel like the self-harming is his private issue. He feels sickened by either the act of self-injury itself or the fact that people are invading.

"(I'm alright)" -- These background vocals are important because they express the undertones of emotion and meaning to the very loud, external and prominent 'get the fuck out'. This makes me think that the people (or person) who confront him are actually loved/close ones, because he didn't actually intend to burst up harshly at them. He just wants to stop them worrying. In contrast to the foreground vocals, the background vocals can also be seen as an unsure after-note.

"Lace me up. lace me up / I'm still looking for these angels in the snow" -- These lyrics are accompanied with a change in pace and melody from the pre-chorus, and essentially shows the conflicting mentality in him that I'm talking about. This is his cry for help. Literally, fix him, sew his wounds back together, if you will. He's looking for an external saviour, someone that isn't himself to help him out of the cold, dark place that he's in.

"It seems like a runaround" -- He is admitting the dichotomy in his own feelings.

"Words that won't matter / And as it falls from your mouth it seems like you needed it more" -- The people who try to speak to him are not getting through, they aren't saying the right things. Again, the confrontation benefits the confront-er more then him.

"I will colour you all red" -- Him wanting them all to know how much he is suffering.

"Braided conversion" -- Him describing the way his discussions with these people don't feel useful. They're twisted.

Closure In Moscow – We Want Guarantees, Not Hunger Pains Lyrics 13 years ago

I actually believe there to be too many religious connotations for it to be purely coincidental, unless of course the whole song is an extended metaphor (a conceit). Therefore I'm interpreting the song more literally - the narrator is conversing with God, expressing his/her disillusion with the lack of an imminent response from "above", so to speak.

Or to put it simply, shit happens, we pray to God and atone for our sins, and shit still happens.

Just to highlight a few lines which I think conveys my ideas:
'I'll be a martyr for your indifference'
'We want guarantees, not hunger pains / But starvation just won't subside'
Bitterly, the narrator accuses God of being detached from the human condition, and notes that people have died in the name of Him in spite of this.

And the chorus:
'Somewhere between the penance and the patience / You drift away with every word they say / Somewhere between the penance and the patience / I think we've lost our way'
The narrator describes losing faith - preforming the rituals, and waiting for a sign that he/she has been "saved", or that he/she is not wasting their time with something that seems less and less real.

Finally:
'In every room that we walk in / The walls are skin and they're writhing'
Now, this one's a little tricky, but personally, I believe this line is nice way of describing human frailty and our sort of transient, searching nature. We're only skin, and it's soft, penetrable, pliant and itching, separately and all at once! It isn't a strong wall - we make mistakes, we fall down and hurt, we change our minds and bodies, and we're always seeking for something that it seems we're missing. It's a beautiful lyric.

I love how everyone can get such a different take on the same song. Very inspiring words, CIM!

Hahaha... I always thought the lyrics went "but that's the price TO pay" and hence the person being abused shot themself. I thought the song was about how the victim gets to a point where they can't pull themself out of the bad relationship & about how ridiculous that seems.

Oh well, still a bloody good song.

I never thought this song was about anorexia before rather than just general depression [my full (teenie) comment is on page 1], however something just hit me...

You said, 'Wait until light, my dear'
Just wait until light

Could "light" in this line actually mean light-weight instead of day-light? It's quite clever if that's what Dallas meant, and it fits nicely with the next bit...

You said, 'Wait until light, my dear'
Just wait until light
One more day will go by
Maybe today you should try
Look past the mirror and find
Look past the mirror

Hmm, haha, still not convinced, but there's certainly something to ponder on now!

Right on, to the two comments above me, but I'll one setep further on Seizure's view; issues dealing with manipulation of the body, "flesh", i.e. plastic surgery. But it's all very much science versus natural, in general.

Gorgeous song, powerful message!

F*cking hot song, and no more really needs to be said. I heard it in the car scene in the film "Mysterious Skin", and it just blew me away. Totally fit the mood in the scene.

I agree with the above! Good old head-banging, grungy teen angst song! And oh man, what a song! I'm a teenager of the current times, and never thought I'd be dwelling into the music genres of the late 80s / 90s! But wow, I can't stop listening to this song! Looove it.

I think this song quite simply is about 'writer's block'. It fits perfectly, for me atleast, but it's much too late at night to try and elaborate... haha. I'll do so eventually.

The Used – Sound Effects And Overdramatics Lyrics 17 years ago
Ahh, I can't explain the way this song makes me feel. But I do admit I like the version of this song that's on the 2005 Taste of Chaos CD better. It's only a slight difference in sound, but maybe that's where people are getting confused in the lyrics.

As for my interpretation, I was reading a few comments saying that "blue" was a direct refference to Crystal Meth. I can see where that was coming from, but I actually disagree. I took a more general/simple approach to the song.

Yes, it's certainly about having sex, gay sex at that, but I think song is bringing through a story behind the sex.
I think it's a sort of a relationship that Bert's describing.

"When I mention blue, all you thought was color
When you mention drugs, all I thought was sober"

Those lines show the difference between the two in the relationship. You know that game you play where someone is shouting random things, and you say the first thing that comes to mind? And it's meant to show what type of person you are? That's what I thought of apon hearing those lines.

One partner thinks of'colour when given the word blue, showing that he thinks of the big picture, and the more exciting things.
The other partner thinks of sobre when given the word drugs, showing that he's really the opposite, thinking of being safe without the fun.

Anyway, the verses describe their experience though sex, and possibly being on drugs (though it might be just comparring similarities between the two). The chorus brings a different light to the relationship. I think maybe the first partner is just into the relationship for the high points (sex, being high), and the second has realised this.

"Smile, cut it out for me this time, smile"

Cut out the charade, smile for real, actually mean something, committ to the relationship.

"Haven't seen him smile in a while"

Do you know what I mean? I think the second partner (the guy from Bert's p.o.v.) might just be tired of just going along with the sex and drugs, and is worried.

Well either that, or he doesn't give two shits as long as he gets off. Haha.

It Dies Today – Black Bile, White Lies Lyrics 17 years ago
I heard this song recently on Triple J Short.Fast.Loud. and I really like it. It's definitley a sort of new sound for IDT, but it's really refreshing.

The lyrics are written really well, and I'm just starting to try and get a clear meaning from them.

Ahh, from what I'm getting so far.. perheps a boy who has had a rough past but he fought his way to the top basically. Only now he's forgotten how hard it was for him and now he's placed himself before anyone- like he's the best, untouchable.

"Lost in self again"- lost in self love?
"Bow to the king of nothing."- mocking him, becasue really he's not that great.
"Reared himself a throne."- he made himself all he is now.

That's pretty much what I got on my first go listening to it. Although I'm pretty sure there's quite a lot more to it. So when I get time, I'll come back and have another go with these lyrics. Maybe I'll read them from a different perspective or something, who knows?

Alexisonfire – Control Lyrics 17 years ago
Okay, I'm going to start this off by saying that this song is probably the most meaningful song to me in the world. Big statement, I know... but this song just does something to me.

My take on it is that's it's about being self-conscious or having low-self esteem, but being in denial of it all. Not wanting to face up to an emotional problem because of on-growing pressure.

This burden's not a heavy one, but I assure you it's present.
-Talking about how depression may not be a big deal when comepared to other disasters in the world nowdays, but it's still a problem and it's still hard to deal with.

You say that you're in control, you say that you are. I can't think of a time when you've looked less alive.
-I've experienced these very lines in real life. I've seen my friend throw his life away by smoking and drinking and using all sorts of drugs, YET he continues to insist that he's just dealing with everything in 'his own way'. He tells me that he's in complete control. But he's not. And it's very obvious.

You said, 'Wait until light, my dear', just wait until light. One more day will go by, maybe today you should try to look past the mirror and find (look past the mirror) that there's something inside, something more to your life.
-'Wait until light', I believe, is kinda like a metaphore for 'I'll do it tomorrow'. So maybe after this person has come out of denial, he/she still is putting off on getting help. But Dallas says 'One more day will go by, maybe today you should try to..' because he sees through what this person is trying to do. 'Look past the mirror' conects with the issue of poor self-esteem. This person may not be confident with what he/she sees on the outside, but Dallas sings about the deeper things inside a person that count. Something more to life than what's only skin deep.

My words won't heal you now, my words won't heal. It is you who decides, it is you who decides.
-Nothing that anyone says to a person will fix depression in him/her. This person needs to decide for his/herself whether or not he/she wants to get better and overcome all of these confidence issues.

Believe that you are just fine, believe that you are. You'll feel so alive, you'll feel so alive.
-Again, believing in yourself is one of the only ways to tackle depression and self-hate. The healing process does rely a lot on the person him/herself. And it's true, by letting go depression, you feel like you're alive again. You can breathe again. You're no longer trapped within yourself.

Be what you are now, be what you are. Do not keep it inside, that hate will not subside.
-When someone is depressed or self-concious, they aren't letting themselves fully be themselves. They hold back on things, because they are either shy, embarrassed, don't fit in, or they just don't believe they are capable. 'that hate' is meaning the self-hate, and how it will never sink down to nothing. It's never going to vanish or cool if you keep it inside. You have to let it go.

Haha, don't worry, I'm done now.

:]

I'm really relieved I got all of that out because I've been dying to do this for, like, EVER. Like I mentioned before, I've experienced this personally through my friends as well as myself. This song still makes me cry, no matter how many times I hear it. And it's just amazing that the lyrics can mean so many different things to everyone.

So TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK OF MY TAKE ON IT. I'll be glad to talk to other people about it! I like hearing about people's OWN thoughts!
