| Antony and the Johnsons – For Today I Am a Boy Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Oh my goodness this whole album is a weird little miracle. I read somewhere that this is about transgendered and that makes perfect sense but that's not really how I personally interpret it. To me it's more about feeling small and if not ugly, then at least unremarkable, and wanting to grow up into something bigger and beautiful and powerful. And I like the way that this song is pretty touching to me in that way. It can work on different levels for different people. |

| Tom Waits – That Feel Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| Man, I found the rest of this album impressive, but it had nothing on this. Gives me that heartachy feel. | |
| Amy Winehouse – Tears Dry On Their Own Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| Parts of this song hit a bit close to home for me right now. Amen, sister. | |
| Feist – My Moon My Man Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| Okay, the anal sex connection? I'm not buying it. The interpretation seems more than tenuous. But who am I to argue with the interpretations of others | |
| Tom Waits – Bronx Lullabye/Smugglers Waltz Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| This is the saddest damn song of all time. | |
| Björk – Mouth's Cradle Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| I think it's more about her wanting to hide from politics than her wanting to participate in them :P | |
| Radiohead – Myxomatosis. (Judge, Jury, & Executioner.) Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| Bloody beautiful. Sends chills right through me every time. My favorite Radiohead song right now. | |
| Bloodhound Gang – Foxtrot Uniform Charlie Kilo Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I remember when this came out and it was all over everything, and I would (seriously) watch the video thinking "What the balls is all this about then?". It wasn't until I took a very good look at the song that I went "F...U... Oooooh." I'm a dick. |
| Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – Dead Man in My Bed Lyrics | 17 years ago |
"He used to be so good to me, now he smells so f**king bad" How on earth has this not been commented on? Best on Nocturama, in my opinion. Don't have any real interpretation though. |
| Radiohead – Everything in Its Right Place Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| Good song though :P Forgot to add that | |
| Radiohead – Everything in Its Right Place Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| Oh man, I was on uncyclopedia for some reason and I was in that misheard radiohead lyrics article. I read the ones for this song and the "Yesterday I woke up sucking a lemon" line. Well, they replaced sucking with smoking. But I laughed hysterically, it was very funny for some reason. And then I listened to the song and realised that they were actually singing about lemons and I could not stop laughing for five minutes. | |
| Radiohead – Bangers + Mash Lyrics | 18 years ago |
This song really, really reminds me of Electioneering. Which is definitely a good thing. I'm never good at looking at things politically, which is probably why I always saw this song as being about an addiction to power, pure and simple. You aqquire some of it, and then you can't get enough (ie the "poison", "and now I want more"). Good song. I find it terribly sexy for some reason :P In the same way as Muse's Supermassive Black Hole. Mmm. |
| The Dresden Dolls – Glass Slipper Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| They played this at a gig I attended. It was one of the most beautiful moments I can remember. | |
| The Dresden Dolls – Will Lyrics | 18 years ago |
It sounds to me like she is talking about a person who she genuinely did love- one of those loves that dominates your life, until little else is left. She struggled to get it reciprocated, but he wasn't interested. Now she is sleeping with him, in what is really just an opportunity to get laid with the male, but for her it is an explosion of sexual tension. By casually fucking him, she is trying to prove to herself that he means nothing to her. "If only we could ride far enough, I'd forget you altogether"- Here is an example of this. She is literally trying to screw herself into oblivion. The bit about her mind going blank refers to the same intentions. (I don't mean to sound crude :P) This is one of the most melancholy, tragic songs I've heard in a while. It's about being so passionate about a person who chooses to pointedly ignore you. Absolutely beautiful. |

| Coldplay – Swallowed in the Sea Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Claiming that our personal interpretations of songs are invalid, or "inane", because they involve something that you find boring is narrow-minded, pretentious and just plain idiotic. I find examinations of human behaviour and relationships in music and literature far more fascinating than hidden codes and messages. I cannot see what is unreasonable about this. Also, why on earth can't songs about romantic attatchments involve imagery and metaphor? Also of note is the caption above the box that I am typing into. It asks "What does this song mean to you". It invites members to tell their own personal interpretations of songs, what it means to them. A difference in opinion does not mean that one opinion is invalid. Finally, I challenge you to re-read my own (perfectly sensible) interpretation of the song and show me that it is wrong. Not that it is one of many posibilities, but that it is WRONG. That my comments have no connections to the text. I will not have some psuedo-intellectual fuckwit come into a good-natured discussion and claim that his or her analysis is more important than everyone elses because it is less common. This is not clever, nor is it constructive. Noone is impressed. |
| Tori Amos – Body and Soul Lyrics | 18 years ago |
This is certainly a very sexy song. The sexiest on the album, by far. Also one of my favorites. Beyond the seducing of a priest or religious man, I see this as a condemnation of religion's attitude towards sexuality. The bit about his seven devils needing love is telling him to stop feeling ashamed of his lust, to embrace it. The bit about ecstasy is about sexuality being purer than any religion. |
| Muse – Hoodoo Lyrics | 18 years ago |
All the political analysises of this song are very impressive. I can never get political meanings out of some songs. But as plausible as they sound, I like to think of this song as being about two people. That's just how I roll XD I have no idea what this song is about, but it is without a doubt one of the album's finest (Starlight is my favorite, but this is a close second). Definitly the most classically Muse. Also, have you ever had one of those things when lyrics in a song seem to completly, clearly and concisely summerise a thing that is happening in your life? Feels like I've been hit by a train whenever it happens. Anyway, last stanza. My god. |

| Coldplay – Swallowed in the Sea Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I have just completely fallen in love with this song, and after really considering the lyrics (like I haven't in years) I have finally come to a conclusion as to it's meaning. I think it is about a breakup, told more or less chronologically. He wants her back, desperately. "You cut me down a tree and brought it back to me And that's what made me see where I was going wrong" Perhaps he is describing the positive influence that he had on her life, like she made him re-evaluate himself and see the error of his ways, a little. "You put me on a shelf and kept me for yourself I can only blame myself, you can only blame me" Maybe he became restless within the relationship, felt pressured or something, freaked out. Another part of the song hints at his doing something wrong, and maybe this is the blame bit. "And I could write a song a hundred miles long Well that's where I belong and you belong with me And I could write it down or spread it all around" I think all this business about writting a song is him trying to prove his dedication; I could write a really long song with all the feelings I have for you, etc. "Get lost and then get found or swallowed in the sea" Describing the two posibilities ahead of him: Getting lost and then found means losing the woman and then getting her back, and "swallowed in the sea" is the alternative, swallowed up by loneliness. "You put me on a line and hung me out to dry Darling, that's when I decide to go see you" Refering to her leaving him, which made him realise what he was missing, and resulted in this song, or what he's saying in it. "You cut me down to size and opened up my eyes Made me realize what I could not see" Same- Her abandoning him made him realise her true merit "And I could write a book..." Variation on the song, more declarations of his affection "Oh, what good is it to live with nothing left to give Forget but not forgive, not loving all you see" He's asking her why she won't take him back- what point is there to life if there is no love in it, if you're not giving it. "forget but not forgive" refers to the mistake that he made, he means that it was insignificant but she still refuses to budge. "Not loving all you see" reinforces the idea that life is meaningless if you don't love. "You belong with me, not swallowed in the sea Yeah, you belong with me Not swallowed in the sea" On a more personal note, this is the part of the song that I find the most lovely. It's like the whole song was a plea to this woman, almost begging for her affection, and it hit a climax at the forget but not forgive bit, and the end is one final attempt, a sincere plea, please come back. That's all I've got! |

| Coldplay – Sparks Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I have had to more or less ban myself from listening to this song, because it always has me in tears by the second verse. Musically and lyrically, one of the most purely beautiful songs I know. It conveys a hopelessness, a desire, so many things that I know far too well. |
| Richard Ashcroft – A Song For The Lovers Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| I like this a lot. I interpreted the lyrics as having something to do with... um, awkwardness? Like he wants to sleep with this chick, but he's intimidated or anxious about it. Or maybe it's not sexual, and he's just kind of apprehensive about begining a relationship with her? I don't know. Maybe the 'can't stop looking back' implies that he's been hurt in relationships before, and he's scared of starting a new one? | |
| Regina Spektor – Us Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| This is simply a wonderful song. I was thinking about the lyrics, but i couldn't come up with anything. First i thought about it in a love kind of way, but that didn't work too well. Then i thought about communism and came up with some tenuous links to the end of world war two (they were really tenuous). So i stopped trying, because this song is delightful just how it is. Possibly one of hre best :D | |
| Coldplay – Politik Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Bah. It bugs me when people insist on forcefully interpreting things politically. I never thought this song had anything to do with specific political goings-on. That said, this is a fantastic song, probably my second favorite from Coldplay. Also, you must see it live. You really must. It was nothing short of ORGASMIC. |
| Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – Abattoir Blues Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I only have a vague understanding of this song. I interpreted it this way- This man in the song, he has a rather bleak outlook on life. He sees it as pointless, he feels like everyone is just aimlessly drifting towards death- "Drifting down to the abbatoir". He sees himself as a part of this awful world, a "jerk". His only comfort appears to be this woman, who means the world to him, and he desperatly wants her to see the world through his eyes, "Do you see what i see dear?". He wants her to save him from his reality, which scares him. It's a beautiful song, so melancholy. I'm hooked on it right now. |

| Björk – Crying Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Great song, one of my first bjork ones. I remember buying the album, listening to this track and thinking "WTF" until it grew on me and i saw it's genius. | |
| Björk – Aurora Lyrics | 18 years ago |
"utter mundane" Are both english words, noparty. At least spelt like that. I love this song too, it evokes the mood of the album well. Very hushed and soft. I don't know what's it's about, but the vocals are lovely. |
| Björk – Innocence Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| I heard this before Earth Intruders, and i must say i love this so much more. Earth Intruders is gorgeous, but this is so simple and lovely. This woman is my favorite musician ever, and she always delivers :D | |
| Muse – Blackout Lyrics | 18 years ago |
This is a beautifully put together song. I'm a sucker for strings and Bellamy's voice is especially wonderful in this song. Meaning is pretty simple to me, a doomed relationship. It's not really specific but it conveys that sense of loss, like they're in love but they know they've got to go their seperate ways, before things go bad. It's so poignant and lovely and it makes me want to cry every time. |
| Muse – Sober Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Man, i always thought "Solid" was "sordid". don't know why, that's just what it sounded like to me :P | |
| Björk – Bachelorette Lyrics | 18 years ago |
This is a beautiful song, both musically and lyrically. I of course expect this from Bjork, but this one is especially delightful. I agree with the 'Passive object/passionate animal" But i also agree that she isn't afraid. The title as well as the lyrics says to me that she has seen a lot of men come and go, and she is describing the cycle of relationships. She goes through the motions of a love affair- attraction, passion, obsession, and the disintegration of these feelings. "I'm a tree that grows hearts, one for each that you take" I believe isn't aimed at one man but all suitors- if you break my heart, and you eventually will, i will grow more, and come back to love another person again. she says that men will come and go and so will love but she is eternal. A bachelorette. :D |
| Björk – Alarm Call Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Heh, this is one of those infuriatingly happy songs that makes you want to go hug trees and swim with dolphins and things like that. The line about the buddist thing seems to me like shes saying i don't have to be a buddist to achieve enlightenment, i just look around at this pretty awesome planet with my unnatural optimism and everything is groovy! And she wants us to see it too. |
| Björk – 107 Steps Lyrics | 19 years ago |
If you haven't seen the movie, i can't imagine the song making much sense. As for the movie, it's defidently worth seeing. I would have liked to see the music kick in a little earlier, but other than that absolutly no complaints. Bjork did a beautiful job. |
| The Prodigy – Serial Thrilla Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| Hehe, my favorite too. Dunno why. Must be that secksy hair-guy. | |
| The Prodigy – Smack My Bitch Up Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I'm amused by the fact that this song with 2 lines of lyrics that really don't mean much can generate this much discussion. It's kind of cool actually. I love you guys. Anyway, last guy i asked said they were talking about their speakers, which seems to make sense, although he's hardly a reputable source. |
| The Prodigy – Baby's Got A Temper Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Right, they like rohypnol, i think that's about it. Doesn't need much defining :P And i for one found the video rather entertaining. Especially old business-like briefcase toting prodigy. |
| System of a Down – CUBErt Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Im Iranian, you sound right to me. Sounds like he's talking about how we're wasting our lives, lack of individuality, merely spectators instead of trying to make a difference, blah blah etc. Yes, the concept itself is a little cliched but it's well written and sounds fantastic, so i don't mind. These dudes can make an song about pottery and fruit sound fantastic! |
| System of a Down – Darts Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Firstly, this may be my favorite song from all 5 albums. Every SOAD fan i personally know seems to love Toxicity the most, but the self titled album will always be my favorite, for songs like this. The homosexuality theory doesn't sound right to me, they don't seem very homophobic to me. Sounds like it's about modern religion, the thing in the CD booklet about how people used to worship a whole array of gods and now, in a lot of big religions only worship one and that's a big clue. I always interpreted it as modern, one-god religions are too oppresive and dominate our lives too much. |
| System of a Down – Nuguns Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Firstly, yes i think this is about prostitution, makes sense. I would also like to make a more general complaint about the fact that everyone always tries to define every SOAD song ever in a political way. Serj himself said that it was a common misconception. It just... I don't know, BOTHERS ME. Makes me all twitchy. |
| System of a Down – Vicinity of Obscenity Lyrics | 19 years ago |
This song is the absolutely beautiful madness that enabled SOAd to steal my heart. It defys classification. Anyway, i would put good money on this being written by a very stoned band member. (if i'm going to get yelled at for that, take a peek at the 'drugs' section of SOADfans.net's photo gallery :D) Although of all the theories, the STD one seems to make the most sense. |
| Björk – Vökuró Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I'm surprised that the lyrics are so cheerful and pretty, the song always sounded so sad to me, like a hymn or like she's mourning something. | |
| Björk – Pluto Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Drinking, masturbation, anything that provides a release makes sense. Like getting wasted, forgeting all of lifes little annoyances and feeling "brand new". And the bit about being a bit tired tommorow, that could mean a hangover! I love this song. It's the closest bjork gets to RAAAWK. |
| Björk – The Anchor Song Lyrics | 19 years ago |
BEAUTIFUL SONG. The horns annoyed me a little at first, but they really grew on me. Has anyone else heard the live icelandic performance with a choir? I saw a fuzzy recording on youtube and i was almost in fangirl tears. |
| Björk – 5 Years Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Firstly, isn't it "show me your powers"? I'm sure thats what it says in the booklet... but everyone seems to disagree with me. Anywho, i love this song. This is Bjorks POWER SONG :D Go screw yourself, commitment-fearing menfolk! That kinda thing. |
| Regina Spektor – Samson Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| This isn't much of an analysis, but Samson is one of my favorite love/heartbreak songs EVER, and there are a lot of good 'uns. It's one of those songs, along with Coldplay's The Scientist and the Shrek version of Hallalujah, that just makes me want to cry. | |
| Regina Spektor – 20 Years of Snow Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I read all your explainations and they all make so much sense, my theory was that she lived somewhere rural and out-of-the-way with her father and she wanted to experience the world she had read about. But that makes much more sense. stop jaywalking, it's "feel the waltz", but it IS hard to make out :P |
