This song is performed in the movie "Young@Heart" and is absolutely a must-see, simply for the climactic performance of this song. (I really recommend seeing the whole film, not just the YouTube clip, so you can really get a feel for what the song means. You will not hear these lyrics ever the same again, I promise. When we watch someone we love go through something difficult, our instinct is always to try and "fix" everything, and we end up feeling just as helpless as our loved one that we can't fix it. That's the most that anyone can do though, is to (even if we know we can't) promise that we will *try* to fix them. |

This song is a masterpiece! It sounds out as just a breath, and ends with the full band. The arrangement of the song tells the story just as much as the lyrics do, in my opinion. It starts out so slow and simple in the first verse but builds quite gradually as the narrator's insistence grows. I imagine Sara's fiddle solo after the first verse to be Helena's sad response - pleading with the narrator to please not leave her, even as he tells her there's another woman she begs him to stay with her. The narrator's second verse (and his reply to Helena) is harsher and more insistent as he tries to paint a clearer picture for Helena. I think that deep down he cares about her, but he makes himself out to be such a "jerk" in order to make the split easier on Helena. He knows that he's in love with the other girl, but still knows that Helena deserves better than him. |

This song sounds nothing like anything released in the last twenty years - brilliant haunting song. I believe this song to be about a woman who is still in love with a man who doesn't love her back. She is determined not to be the kind of desperate girl who keeps clinging at a relationship that's not there - but she knows she can't do that when she's in close proximity to her beloved. She decides to leave town with her pride intact so she can mourn her lost love privately. |

| I really enjoyed this song. It is rare to find a song with homoerotic messages that is widely accepted and enjoyed by the rock community. I don't know anything about the sexual preferences of the band members, but I salute them for being able to present what could be a controversial subject matter in a mainstream song. | |
