dont know if anyone else has noticed this, but the first minute or so of this song sounds a lot like the great gig in the sky by pink floyd - a song thats supposedly a metaphor for death. and then the lyrics pick up from just after the death of the person in the song, presumably the rev, so this may well have been deliberate. fucking beautiful song. |

theres all sorts of meanings that can be read here, but i reckon this song is pretty literal in its meaning - a man who has lived a life of evil is being dragged down to hell. its basis could be the faustian legend, which has been the basis of numerous books, films, songs etc for hundreds of years - essentially, a person makes a pact with Lucifer, where he is given supernatural power, wealth, and a life of indulgence, but when he dies his soul will belong in hell.
So here we have the character as he dies, being dragged down to hell. Hence he "should have known the price of evil, and it hurts to know that you belong here" - he knew this was his fate, he just never really thought about it while living. the songs message being dont succumb to such temptation ("fight not to fail, not to fall, or youl end up like the others). not literally meaning dont sell your soul to the devil, but dont live a selfish life centred on indulgence, or you will pay for it.
however ive also seen the film jacobs ladder and yeah i think its pretty safe to say that a7x got the idea for the video from that scene. |

| Nine Inch Nails – Right Where It Belongs Lyrics
| 16 years ago

Although i always loved this song, i never truly understood what it was really saying untill i was coming off drugs, and simoultaneously taking a long look at myself and who i was. Its only in those dark introspective times that you start asking questions like, "who am i really?" "why are we here?". You start to question morality and your own perception of it, hence the animal in the cage analogy. Many drug addictions, or any other addictions in fact, alter the reward pathway system in your brain, meaning that your entire way of looking at life and your incentives are changed. You become a different person, and coming off drugs you are forced to look in the mirror, to examine who you are and who you want to be.
I'm not saying that this song is about drugs. Its about those moments of reflection. And it carries an optimistic tone with it i believe, that once you have opened your eyes, asked all those hard question about yourself, then even if you don't like the answers you are far more free and real than someone who "lives in this illusion". Knowing Trents experiences with heroin, however, and the fact that this was his first drug-free album, it would not suprise me if his inspirtation for writing the song was getting off drugs |

what gwynbleidd wrote about this song, i could not agree with more. the whole of closer sums up that state of mind in a way but this is my favourite song on the album, its not so much dark as totally bleak. its that stage after anger/pain where your just empty, cynical, cold, you dont care anymore.
With regards to the "crisis" i think perhaps an event has happened that has shaken him up, but he is pondering if anything will really change or if he'll be back in this state again in a few days, or weeks, months.

| Lou Reed – Perfect Day Lyrics

I think that the people who are saying this song isnt about drugs/heroin are the people that do not have experience of them, because for an outsider it probably doesnt quite make the same sense as it makes to a user/ex-user in this context.
The idea of spending weekends alone, in a haze, feeling happy and content, yet at the same time knowing that this happiness is artificial and will fade is beautifully conveyed in this song. The emotions of euphoria ("what a perfect day"), of feeling passionate love towards the drug ("you just keep me hanging on"), but also the lonliness and self doubt (i thought i was someone else, someone good) - all emotions that come with drug addiction - could not be portrayed more accuratley than here, which is why i cannot see beyond the concept of this song being about drugs. The final line of the song i believe relates to the stage when the drug is wearing off and the comedown is just starting, where you dont feel desolate yet but you know what you are about to experience. you know you are about to reap what youve sewn.
because heroin was reed's addiction that is the drug im guessing its about. but it doesnt have to be, it relates to many drugs. my addiction was e and even though that is a drug assosiated with parties and raves, when your totally hooked it doesnt matter where your doing it anymore, there were many occasions i had weekends pretty much exactly like whats described in this song. the dreamy feel of the music in this song would suggest it was about heroin as well.

macpherso, youve clearly never actually listened to any immortal technique, and assume because hes a black rapper from the ghetto he therefore sings about violence and drugs. the guy fuckin knows his shit, go and listen to peruvian cocaine, the cause of death, or dance with the devil which is probably the most powerful anti-gangster song ever written. there are artists out there who sing "fuck george bush " etc and dont know what the fuck theyre on about but hes not one of them. |

| Immortal Technique – Dance With The Devil Lyrics

Yeah the point is that he suddenly realizes in that second what hes done, what hes doing etc. and the fact that it could have been his own mother, its an ordinary woman just like her. basically the cold front that hes had while being a hardman just falls and his basic human instinct returns. and immortal techniques message is that by then its too late because hes already "danced with the devil" too long, hes already corrupted, and he ends up just killing himself because he cant face this.
"And crying out to the sky cause he was lonely and scared
But only the devil responded, cause God wasn't there"
Fuckin incredible song, as many people have said one of the most powerful songs ive ever heard. But yeah i dont think its literal |

no matter how hard ian tries he's stuck in a different frame of mind, a different state to other people in the world - the "Nothing will hold, nothing will fit" line is talking about how this affects his relationships with others, including his wife. ians lyrics were often his only method of pleaing for help as emotionally he was incapable of doing this in other ways. this song is an example of this. unfortunetly a lot of people only realized quite how literal his lyrics were after he was dead |

| Joy Division – Dead Souls Lyrics

Ian Curtis supposedly had various flashbacks to a previous life, which could well be what the first two lines are refering too. Elsewhere, in general the severe epilepsy and general schitzophrenic personality Curtis had would have created many delusions and distorted his reality. In this song hes talking about these other realities intruding on his everyday life.
Oh and by the way for those of you insulting Nine inch nails, you realize the reason Morris' drums sound perfect is that Martin Hannet dubbed every drum sound indivisually to create the metronome effect. so thats basically synthetic as well - not that theres anything wrong with this technique, the production was one of the things that made Joy Division so unique and brilliant. |

God im sick of people saying every joy division song is about epilepsy! This song was written long before ian was even diagnosed, it was an early song. I dont think it was till like half way through the unknown pleasures tour that he was diagnosed. I actually dont know what this songs about, its a great song but its never seemed one to really read into for me But its certainly NOT about epilepsy! |

| Joy Division – She's Lost Control Lyrics

i find it pretty chilling that ian wrote this before he knew he was epileptic, as is described in the recent, incredible, biopic 'control'. whilst working in a jobs centre he helped a girl who was epileptic find work. He witnessed her having a fit whilst at the centre, when he phoned her a few weeks later to see if her job was going okay he discovered with shock that she had died whilst having an epileptic fit. he wrote shes lost control about this. ian had experienced abscences as a child, a well known indicator of epilepsy, so one wonders whether perhaps even if he did not consciously know he had it, on some level he had an idea. simply because of just how dark this song is, and because it would just be too ironic if he wrote this with no idea that he had it |

This song really sums up drug addiction. you have a problem but its so big you cant comprehend it and the moment you have to face it you hide away, denying it andnormally takin more of the drug to forget you have a problem...and so the cycle goes on, you dig a deeper hole, which is unfortunetly what peter himself ended up doing. |

I dont think this song is about a hallucinagenic drug trip, i think its someone indirectly killing themself whilst on cocaine/E or a similar drug. The whole astronaut thing is a metaphor.
In the first verse, as people have said he's nervous, excited, people around him hoping hes gonna be alright.
then with the whole 'youve really made the grade' bit, its the drug kicking in. when drugs like coke kick in you get that feeling, your top of the world, everyone loves you, your invincible. so then he goes and starts taking risks, doing things he wouldnt normally do - 'now its time to leave the capsule if you dare' etc . its all mixed up in his mind, he thinks its his friends (ground control) egging him on, when really its the drug.
at the end he's gone and got himself into a fight or done something really stupid, people around him have lost control of him, he's gone mad. maybe it could be overdosing, whatever, still amazin song, my interpretation might be completley wrong but i think its certainly got some connection with drugs |

| Bloc Party – Hunting for Witches Lyrics

This is not about terrorist attacks or the war on terror at all. Its about the media witch hunt which has followed it, and the way that the government is using it to keep people in line - hence the line Desperate and misinformed
Fear will keep us all in place
After 7/7, the government passed a set of ridiculous set of 'anti terror' laws that in truth were just violations of freedom of speech, but coz the nation was in panic, everyone overlooked them. the line about middle class indecision is brilliant as well - i talked to friends before 7/7 and everyones happy to critisize the government, critisize the war on terror, and all of a sudden afterwards everyone just has a go at you if you even suggest all may not be as it seems. i personally believe that the government had a hand in this terrorist atrocity because from it they have simply achieved so much - theyve got people on their side, theyve got a scapegoat, theyve taken away civil liberties. and distracted from the atrocities in iraq as well. this is a brilliant song, its great that a band as prominent as bloc party have come out with it |

the 'do unto others' line is brilliant - the people running the american government are proclaimed christians, yet they are destroying the world.

| Nine Inch Nails – Mr. Self Destruct Lyrics

this is definetly about heroin for me -how it totally hijacks the reward system in your brain meaning you base your whole life around getting it, how once youre hooked you will do absoluley anything to get youre fix - hence 'i am the bullet in the gun' - someone who was previoulsy a decent person can be turned to serious crime.
however it emphasizes the point that although by the end the drug is in control, the drug cannot entirely be blamed. the drug has not injected itself, the person has allowed this situation to arise.
it sets the tone brilliantly for an album basically about this charecters life falling apart in every aspect because of the drugs and all that goes with them.
ultimately it will lead to him wasting away - 'i am the end of all your dreams' |

| Pulp – Sorted for E's and Wizz Lyrics
|
this is an excellent reflection on everything thats wrong with the E culture. the repeated line ' that's okay cos we're all sorted out for E's and wizz' is emphasising the fact that the drug totally demotivates you from doing anything, or caring about anything. everythings alright, as long as youve got more pills left.
the last verse portrays just how awful the comedown is. at its peak, you just feel so guilty and false, hence the "Mother, I can never come home again" line.
overall i dont think its an anti-E song though, its a satirical overview of the whole thing. coz you can be a drug user and still see the many hypocrisies and problems of it. and i think really thats what jarvis is doing here |
