Frank Turner – Sunshine State Lyrics 12 years ago
Nice song. To be specific though: California's slogan is the Golden State. Florida is the Sunshine State. Also, don't know about Joni, but Neil Young has lived primarily in California for decades and still does.

Los Campesinos! – Cemetary Gaits Lyrics 12 years ago
Almost certainly a reference to "Cemetry Gates" (sic) by the Smiths, although not a cover. Inspired by the song (poets, etc.).

PJ Harvey – Written on the Forehead Lyrics 13 years ago
The "Let it Burn" and "Blood and Fire" lyrics are I believe a sample from "Blood and Fire" by Niney The Observer.

Fun fact: the theory of the Big Bang was first "invented" by a priest.

Say Hi – Bluetime Lyrics 16 years ago
It's actually Ms. Pac-Man. "Sue" is another ghost from that, while the original Pac-Man instead has "Clyde." Blinky's behavior is a bit more dangerous as suggested by the lyrics.

Xiu Xiu – Master of the Bump (Kurt Stambaugh, I Can Feel the Soil Falling Over My Head) Lyrics 16 years ago
I believe this is a typo, and it's Kurt Stumbaugh. He played saxophone in IBOPA with Jamie Stewart.

Red House Painters – San Geronimo Lyrics 16 years ago
San Geronimo is a town in Marin County, Northern California. There is a place in San Diego called Ocean Beach, but it more likely refers to the one in San Francisco.

Mr. Bungle – Desert Search for Techno Allah Lyrics 17 years ago
"Peacock angel" probably refers to Melek Taus, the holy figure in the non-Muslim Kurdish Yazidi religion.

Flogging Molly – Salty Dog Lyrics 17 years ago
The intro is actually to the tune to "The Kesh Jig," but the lyrics are by Dave King.

Abney Park – Stigmata Martyr Lyrics 18 years ago
There is a Bauhaus song by the same name, but this is not a cover.

Local H – 500,000 Scovilles Lyrics 18 years ago
The Scoville scale is a measure of relative pepper "hotness." 500,000 on the Scoville is somewhere in the range of a Red Savina Habanero pepper. It used to be the hottest pepper known, but the Naga Jolokia is hotter now.

British Sea Power – Something Wicked Lyrics 19 years ago
I get the impression that this song is about the usage of nature symbols for militaristic purposes, particularly by the Nazis. The Oak Leaf Cluster is a common military emblem, while the Germans used the Totenkopf (Death's Head) from the days of Prussia up until WWII. A German plane was the Messerschmitt Me-262 "Schwalbe" (Swallow). Finally, the field grey coverall could be a flight suit. BSP seems to be decrying the usage of nature symbols for unnatural purposes.
