Something Wicked Lyrics

Where the ancient oak leaf clusters grew, the deaths head hawk moth flew,
Something wicked this way comes.
The swallow is depicted there along your fuselage,
Something wicked this way comes.

I'm not waiting for you.

It's breaking up and getting far away,
I used to know what I wanted to say.
Please remove that field grey coverall,
Your works of nature are unnatural.

Well the lake was clear as crystal, the best tea I ever had,
Something wicked this way comes.
It starts with love for foliage and ends in camouflage,
Something wicked this way comes.

I'm not waiting for you.

It's breaking up and getting far away,
I used to know what I wanted to say.
Please remove that field grey coverall,
Your works of nature are unnatural.

To me this sounds like an apostrophe by a naturalist to a military engineer. I get the impression that the two used to be friends, even lovers, but grew apart when one pursued a military career. This would explain the lines, "I'm not waiting for you" (an inversion of the usual "I'll wait for you!" cliche) and "I used to know what I wanted to say." It seems like the narrator is lamenting the way the addressee turned his or her talents for botany and zoology to destructive ends--"your works of nature are unnatural." Seems like a particularly oblique but uncommonly heartfelt anti-militarist statement, couched in personal rather than political terms. I think it's actually rather genius.

I get the impression that this song is about the usage of nature symbols for militaristic purposes, particularly by the Nazis. The Oak Leaf Cluster is a common military emblem, while the Germans used the Totenkopf (Death's Head) from the days of Prussia up until WWII. A German plane was the Messerschmitt Me-262 "Schwalbe" (Swallow). Finally, the field grey coverall could be a flight suit. BSP seems to be decrying the usage of nature symbols for unnatural purposes.

"something wicked this way comes" is a line in Macbeth, said by the witches when Macbeth is approaching.
