A Perfect Circle – The Nurse Who Loved Me (Failure cover) Lyrics 17 years ago
I prefer the Failure version. I think APC removes the element of dissonance that made the song so creepy.

Song's about a guy in rehab who thinks he's in love with a nurse, and she loves him too. But it's just a product of his own loneliness and mental deterioration; in the end, the nurse is a blank slate, not a person, but only the source of drugs.

I think the "apples on the ground" part is just a reference to his ambitions, dreams; once a part of himself, now "sneezed" out in sleep; rejected through an uncontrollable human function - i.e. his addiction that's led him to rehab.

The Verve – Bittersweet Symphony Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is my absolute anthem. I think it's a lot less specific than some people seem to think. It's just about modern life, the hapiness and sadness. We try our hardest to survive, to make a life for ourselves, become "better" people, but in the end we die, leaving behind all the good and all the bad we've ever done. Life is a bittersweet symphony - it has its ups and downs, but in the end, it has to end somewhere.

It's easy for me to get depressed about this song, but man...there's something in the melody and lyrics that's so uplifting, so true.

Kashmir – Ramparts Lyrics 18 years ago
I think this is just about a relationship ending. They act like there's nothing wrong, struggle to save it from sinking, but in the end have to give up and move on.

Oceansize – The Charm Offensive Lyrics 18 years ago
On second thoughts, I think tinfoil is right. The whole religion part is not actually necessary to the lyrics, just another concept of authority. I'm still of the opinion that EIP was anti-religious, but I think the lyrics are ambiguous enough.

Oceansize – Unfamiliar Lyrics 18 years ago
OK, first off, absolutely brilliant song. The climax is just so intense, the tone so shifting, and the mood so diverse.

As for the lyrics, I may be way off here, but I think it's about
war (I know the "in war" part seems too obvious) The first verse talks about how much everybody can complain about war at first, but how those same protestors soon give up, and forget about it all("fresh blood dries", those killed are soon forgotten).

The second is about the public lying back and accepting the fact that war is out of their influence, that their nothing to be done and it is "above our station" - left to politicians and leaders.

"Always the same face" shows how all wars are the same, lead by the same people, "presenting the same lie" - false pretenses of patriotism. Despite this, we "keep walking sideways" and "changing your mind" - we don't have the power to unite and stop war ourselves, because we're too hesitant.

"Obsolete, your voices are" is self-explanatory. Then, "silence" shows that we consider our own hesitance and reluctance to speak up as the safer option.

"Souls and windows" is a difficult one, but I think it's saying that we become blinded by war, boxed in by patriotic and isolationist values. The "needle and thread" part is about how our values are only superifical, that our obssession with our own morals blinds us against logic.

The "water and oil" part reinforces an Iraq image the most for me. "Saw the seashore" is about a sudden desire, seeing a land beyond our horizons and wanting to conquer it. "Unfamiliar" itself I can't really figure out, but I think it may be about how we distance ourselves from war and leadership because we doubt so much our ability to change them. We treat important things as unfamiliar, and leave them to our leaders.

Anyway, sorry for the long post, but I think this is the most likely meaning I can think of. Considering this song leads straight on from "Commemorative 9/11 T-Shirt", I think it fits the theme nicely. ;)

Amplifier – UFOs Lyrics 18 years ago
Wow, I can't believe nobody's even commented on this band yet!

This song is absolutely beautiful. I think the lyrics are about how fascinated man is with outer space and the whole extraterrestrial world. The narrator is tired of humanity being bottled up and hurting each other, all due to being trapped on earth. All we can do is watch space and dream that there's something out there, and dream about escaping.

Anyway, that's my interpretation. This is an amazing song, and an amazing band. It's only a matter of time before they get the attention they truly deserve.

Brilliant song. Especially love the chorus - most memorable BDM lyrics I've ever heard. Nocturnal is a great album.

As for meaning; Armageddon. Needs no more explanation.

Oceansize – Commemorative 9/11 T-shirt Lyrics 18 years ago
I think this is about our inability to let go of certain events, specifically OR as an example, 9/11, and our ambition to exploit and cling to such things long since their effect has waned. We only remember them because society does, and not because of any personal emotion. I think this also might relate to the resultant war in Iraq - the government "cashing in on a misery", exploiting a sad situation to its own ends.

Nice song though. The heavy part near the end always really hits me :) .

Oceansize – The Charm Offensive Lyrics 18 years ago
Brilliant song - there's a lulling, psychedelic quality to it, while it still retains a distinctly heavy, metallic overtone. Very progressive, very good song.

This is definitely about religious authority. The "Charm Offensive" is the procedures taken to win us over by our religion - the words spoken and facades displayed to win us over to the side of religion, attempting to tackle us using diplomacy and smiles, whilst all the while harbouring evil intents.

The first verse shows how we are lulled into their grasp - 'perception' a 'camera trick', 'authority' a 'uniform'. We are prey to techniques of display and PR. Religion is 'another name for a second chance' - I think this means that our only motivation is through personal desire to go to heaven, throughout most religions. It is nothing deeper than that, and nothing unselfish.

The song goes on to show how this should be our choice, whilst we are still victim to their attempts on our souls rather than personal choice - and yet we 'take this lying down', we accept it and leave it be. It 'burns us all out', leaves us an empty shell, and moves 'everyone into position', to their seperate sphere and role in society, all of them the same.

Possibly the religious theme is not necessarily present (although the 'second chance' line is a big pointer). Fits with the rest of the album nicely though. :)

Down – Three Suns And One Star Lyrics 18 years ago
I'm certain this song is about an addiction of some kind, and fighting it. I'm not sure what the "3 suns and one star" analogy is, though.

The first part is about quitting or facing the consequences ("or the next trick will be on him "). He's has been experiencing the effect of druggs ("drank the oceans dry", "stopped the time"), and yet still regrets what he has done, though cannot abandon his ways.

The chorus is pretty explantory, but I still can't get the 3 suns one star thing...

The next verse shows how he can't conform to the norms of society (square/circle), and how he is left with no alternative ("both bookends burnded" ).

The rest makes some sense after all that. Anyway, awesome song, definitely best on Down III - IMO, a likely contender for best Down song (along with Ghosts Along the Mississipi).

Alien Ant Farm – Courage Lyrics 18 years ago
Man, this song is so freakin' heavy for these guys! It's a shame they lost the metal sound in later albums.

I listen to this song a lot. I think this is about being in a relationship of criticism. The first verse describes the length's he goes to show his love, but her reply is that "Planets don't quite align" - pointing out the imperfections in his efforts, even when he tries his hardest.

The "courageous" part is calling on her to be more diplomatic, appreciative, and just to STFU once in a while.

The next verse sees him realize his error, but conciling himself to put up with her. The "Alien's ain't farmers" part is a bit of an enigma (I always' thought it was "Alien's saying far out" !), but I think it means that for all the things he does for her, he is not going to work like her slave.

Anyway, brilliant song. And monogroid is right - the best bands DON'T get enough credit, because the general public aren't looking for greatness, they're looking for what's hip, what's cool (few exceptions like Led Zep). It's a shame AAF aren't in the click anymore...

Oceansize – New Pin Lyrics 18 years ago
A junkie continues to use even through his own religious beliefs, denying the adverse effect of his addiction. He convinces himself that "it's all for you", that it's all for the betterment of his life, his connection with God. He hurts those around him with his lies and denial, while he loses his connection with the things he treasures most in life.

The Verve – On Your Own Lyrics 18 years ago
ANorthernSoul76 beat me to it - we are born alone, we die alone, and what comes inbetween is...inconsequential? Irrelevant? Or the most important part of all? I can't really tell from the lyrics. Another depressing Verve song, but a good one nonetheless.

And yeah, I hear the crackle too. And it keeps me up at night...

The Verve – Weeping Willow Lyrics 18 years ago
Pretty obvious suicide song - breakup, depression, death. Very emotional I'd been listening to it on a pair of headphones with the treble side broken for ages. Sounds so much better in full stereo. I love the whole imagery - the music is almost more lyrical than the wirds themselves.

BTW, Em7 = the best opening chord ever.

Toby Keith – Courtesy of the red, white, and blue (angry american) Lyrics 18 years ago
Jesus Christ. You know what, I actually find the American patriotism obsession far scarier than any Islamic fundamentalist belief. This song is a THREAT to those who don't wish to conform to the American "apple-pie" ideal and lifestyle. Supporting a belief is all well and good, but to do so blindly, ignorantly and disrespectfully is what alienates everyone.

This song is RACIST, in that it preaches American superiority - our guns are bigger than yours, are live's are happier, are ideals are more modern. I'm proud that in Europe, this idealism doesn't show it's ugly face since the fall of monarchical society. Sure, 9/11 was a tragedy, but did it warant the action taken? That's your decision, but to decide without a shred of proof to your argument, to blindly follow your nation's superiors and opinions, to promote the consensus without asking questions first, is not something to be proud of - it's backward, primitive and childish.

Blinded Colony – Once Bitten, Twice Shy Lyrics 18 years ago
It's a long shot, but I think this is about global warming - about the apathy of the older generation, and our willingness to destroy for a little luxury.

A few hints:
"What will make you understand?
Holding death in your hand?"
(At what point do we stop? Only when it's too late?)

"And when you`ve come to realize it`s way too late
God dammit you HAVE realized and it`s way too late"
(self-explanatory)

"Await the better days, don't pull your weight"
(Just pretend it's not there, leave it to the younger generations)

"Once bitten, twice shy,
Then how come we all die?"
(as the saying goes, we have seen the destruction for ourselves, and should be more careful now; however, for whatever reason, this is not the case).

Like I said, a long shot, and I probably sound like Al Gore here, but it makes sense.

Kashmir – No Balance Palace Lyrics 18 years ago
You're right kirbsta - this is definitely one of the best songs on their latest release. This is one of the more progressive songs by Kashmir, and is almost psychedelic at times, and the heavy distortion, almost shoegazer effects on the guitars makes it so atmospheric...

As for the lyrics, I have absolutely no idea what they mean. Got this from their website:

"A song that in many ways sums up the themes of the whole album: Love, death and the decline of western civilization."

From that, make your own guesses. :)

Kyuss – 50 Million Year Trip (Downside Up) Lyrics 18 years ago
Great song. I love the psychedelic conclusion - I could literally listen to it forever.

I don't think the lyrics are right here either, but judging from the title and the first half, I'm guessing that this is about fighting an addiction, and, ultimately, failing due to the memories spent and attached to the drug (probably teh_weed).

Machine Head – Imperium Lyrics 18 years ago
Words do not describe how fucking amazing this song is. It's my anthem.

The meaning is pretty clear - to be yourself, resist conformity, no matter what obstacles society throws in your path.

Incidentally, "Imperium" is the order of society in ancient Rome. Gotta be the best title ever.

Kashmir – She's Made of Chalk Lyrics 18 years ago
I think this song is about moving on from relationships - making changes, starting afresh, readjusting. I think the She's Made of Chalk line refers to her instability - how she, and the relationship, can crumble away, and is fragile.

Awesome song, anyway. I love the whole psychadelic vibe running through its entirety.

At the Drive-In – Cosmonaut Lyrics 18 years ago
As everyone knows, the Soviet Union gained a reputation for cover-ups and censorhip in its country during the Cold War and Stalin years. This song is obviously connected to the consipracy of failed flights conducted by Russia before Yuri Gagarin succeeded. I know that Cedric has an interest in conspiracy theory, so this doesn't seem unusual.
Firstly, the title "cosmonaut" is a clear reference to Russia's space program. The whole first verse describes a library metaphor, as the Soviet Union "tore a page out of this chapter", erasing all evidence of any occurrence harmful to its reputation.
I gues the "is it heavier than air?" line is describing the failure of rockets - heavier than air in, broadly, they fail to launch or fall to the ground. The "black box lying" is the destruction of any files relating to the incident.
The second verse, I'm not so sure about overall, but it seems to be continuing the theme of the first. Soundproof costume is a reference to a space-suit.
Finally "Am I supposed to die alone?" is the plea of the astronaut, who has been sent out into space and forsaken by his leaders.
OK, that was a little too long, but I think I got my point across anyway. I really love this song - it just has so much powe. t's also pretty heavy for ATDI, which I love, and the distortion just makes it seem sort of blurry and exciting.

P.S. sorry if I didn't credit what you've already said.

Machine Head – Halo Lyrics 18 years ago
Rob Flynn says:
"This is basically an anti-religion song, about the stuff that's been going on in America like them trying to make abortions illegal again. It's a halo over our demise".

This is about how America, though supposedly a country of freedom, is still under the strangelhold of Christianity, as evidenced with the recent abortion debates. This song reflects exactly how I feel about religion and America - that society is still under it's grasp, no matter how progressive we claim to be. It's a sad, epic call for freedom from the chains of Christianity. I'm glad Rob's prepared to write such controversial lyrics.

Machine Head – Beautiful Mourning Lyrics 18 years ago
I think Rob Flynn wrote in Metal Hammer:
"This is one of the more personal songs on the album, and is basically about when I was much younger and fried on acid, really depressed and took a razorblade to my wrists. Something stopped me, but I don't know what."

This is such an emotional song. I love how the clean interludes contrast with the sheer rage of the heavier parts. The lyrics are so poetic and sorrowful, and every time I hear it, it still overwhelms me.

Great song, great album, great band.

Arch Enemy – Machtkampf Lyrics 19 years ago
My favourite song on Doomsday Machine.

For some reason, this reminds me of WWI. But Machtkampf is German for "Power Struggle". So, I'd guess its about a power struggle occurring within - the narrator has a darker side that seems to be taking control of him/her. The narrator seems to be unable to reverse the dark side, and is in a struggle to "End this game" - to make the step to eliminate the alien force.

Anyway, that's just my interpretation.

Ride – Vapour Trail Lyrics 19 years ago
It's in the way that the tone doesn't seem to be happy or sad...it seems uplifting at time, and at others it seems like a kind of hopeless, whistful reflection. I totally know what velmaxcorgan is talking about - sometimes, I wish I could be alone more often to enjoy this song (being in highschool, it's hard to escape). But I love walking alone on those cold, moonlit nights, with this song. It's just so...right.

Anyway, lyrically it needs no explanation. The words themselves aren't important - Andy's voice speaks more in tone than words ever will. It's a shame he ended up in Oasis, of all bands.

And yeah, I'm gonna buy the book too, just cause you guys told me to. Cheers!
