It is a great song. It's lyrics remind me of "A New England." I think this song is about Margaret Thatcher; I she was in office till late 1990, which was only a couple of years before this song was released. |

This song is a lot more than a "glass half full" anthem; it advocates a complete emotional break with material things (including one's health). If one feels no sense of attachment to one's things, than he or she can escape sorrow. This is Buddhism (or Stoicism) in a nutshell. |

I agree with CALLEY, this song is about an individual's struggle with his/her spirituality. |

I think boggles is closer to the mark. The Great Depression is somewhat weakened by the fact the Great Britain weathered the Depression relatively well compared to other Western nations. |

"This European opulence is literally scandolous, for it has been founded on slavery, it has been nourished with the blood of slaves and it comes directly from the soil and the subsoil of the under-developed world."

This is a great song, with outstanding lyrics and music to flawlessly complement them. Like all poem, the lyrics of the song operate on many different planes. Yes, this song does speak to the emptiness of suburban life. But, more than anything else, this song is ANTI-COMMERCIALISM. This song, like many more by the Clash and also on London Calling (see Koka Kola), attacks commercialism for not delivering on its promise of offering happiness. |

Wow, I didn't think the satire in this song was that difficult to discern, but it seems that about half of these posts believe this song encourages drinking. I'm going to go eat some Irish babies now with Jonathan Swift... |
