| The Hold Steady – Yeah Sapphire Lyrics

"You were feisty at first but I broke you and showed you the tempo". Also, spelled "skeptic". Good early lyrics though.
Probably the catchiest THS of, you know, ever. Such good driving song. |

Small correction also:
Some nights it's just entertainment/and some other nights it's work.
Definitely one of the album's top three. Almost as good of an album ender as Separation Sunday's. |

| The Weakerthans – Reunion Tour Lyrics

JKS said that this song was based on the band Great White, who caused 100 deaths when their pyrotechnics went...well, horribly awry during a show and the venue caught on fire. I think beyond that there's also a lot to be read in this song about basically the billions of asshole bands in existence who break up in a way that seems like they just want to market getting back together down the road. I think that "Reunion Tour" doesn't refer to the Weakerthans -- who never broke up -- but is actually more of a criticism of the bands who do. At least for this song. The album title I think refers more to the superseding theme of reuniting (or not reuniting) that's in the other songs. |

| The Weakerthans – Virtute the Cat Explains Her Departure Lyrics

If the cat's name is the "sound" that is lost -- which is brilliant -- then what's actually lost here is both identity and "strength" (the translation of Virtute) on both the part of the narrator and Virtute herself. I love how this ties right back to the chorus (so much as the Weakerthans have choruses) from "Plea" -- "I know you're strong". |

I think it's also worth mentioning that this song furthers the theme of "reunions" throughout the album -- this one being an impossible reunion, that exists only in the narrator's imagination, and his longing for it. |

| The Weakerthans – Night Windows Lyrics

Like "Sun in an Empty Room" off the same album, the title "Night Windows" is actually the name of an Edward Hopper painting (remember they lyric from "Hospital Vespers" off of Reconstruction Site --- "I brought books on Hopper and the arctic"?)
I'm curious as to whether other people think possibly that the dead person recalled in this song (that he sees "suddenly alive") could possibly be whoever is references in the (Manifest)(Hospital Vespers)(Past Due) sequence from Reconstruction site -- like the dead person is a recurring "character" in the same way that Virtute the cat is? |

| Phil Collins – In The Air Tonight Lyrics
| 19 years ago
|
"I don't know what this song is about. When I was writing this I was going through a divorce. And the only thing I can say about it is that it's obviously in anger. It's the angry side, or the bitter side of a separation. So what makes it even more comical is when I hear these stories which started many years ago, particularly in America, of someone come up to me and say, 'Did you really see someone drowning?' I said, 'No, wrong'. And then every time I go back to America the story gets Chinese whispers, it gets more and more elaborate. It's so frustrating, 'cos this is one song out of all the songs probably that I've ever written that I really don't know what it's about, you know." - Phil Collins (BBC Interview)
So...I think it's...about...divorce. And you're all ridiculous :) |
