Ani DiFranco – Egos Like Hairdos Lyrics 17 years ago
this one is a really cool cover, i've never heard the song before, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UplfUGSoUAE but just listening to this gave me the jist idea... haha what albumn is this from.. i like this song. its about how she doesn't want people to be egotistical.. i like how "egos like haridos- depending on how they slept last night" can have double meanings..just like having your hair weird from sleeping on it funny.. or the other sleeping...

Ani DiFranco – Names and Dates and Times Lyrics 17 years ago
this is one of my favorite songs, i like the live at carnegie hall version, such a good song. it's about her old friends and everyone she knows and has met along the long journey of her career. She's talking about how there are so many people and she doesn't remember all of them, and wants to meet people that are different that she wouldn't be able to forget. She is in search of unique people, and I think some of the content is similar to "Face Up and Sing", how she has had so many people do the same things to her, and she just wants something different!

Ani DiFranco – Reprieve Lyrics 17 years ago
^^that quote predicts the future for her, how she is pregnant now, she talked about that in one thing i saw, how her songs often know more about what will happen then she will. I wrote alot alot more on this comment, I don't know why it cut it off.. is there a limit or something? (haha) Well I'll write more what got cut off later

Ani DiFranco – Reprieve Lyrics 17 years ago
This is such a strong poem/song. I wish i went to that NOW conference, i didn't even know about, and i live about 10 minutes from Albany, I was so mad when I found that out! I saw the video of this on youtube though. I did see her in November though, and she played some songs from this albumn, but not this one. This is probably one of my favorite songs on this albumn, but i like her older albumns better, I think. This song is so dramatic, and truthful. Its a map thats gone off alittle off the course, and it all fits somehow, It's about feminism, and how the women race is sort of put in the back seat, and patriarchy. "To split yourself in two is just the most radical thing you can do"

Ani DiFranco – Looking for the Holes Lyrics 17 years ago
"i don't wear anything i can't wipe my hands on", how pure and truthful, i love that line, its so ani-ish, and talks about how she doesn't like dressing up fancy really, or being someone she's not, she impresses people by her guitar playing, knowledge, outlooks on life, poetry, political strengths, and so much more,...she doesn't care what her personal appearance is, and doesn't mind to wipe her hands on her own clothes, its un-practical to wear clothes you can't get dirty! i agree with this line, also the like "each breath is recycled from someone elses lungs", i loveeee that line, and totally agree with regardmylashes, and it makes me think and is almost a weird creepy-ish thing to talk about and think about, like we are all connected by the oxygen we breath, and so much more. I cannot end the number of metaphors in this song, i love it!

i absolutely love this song. there is so much hidden meaning, and everytime i listen to it, i find something else new i didn't remember hearing at all. there are so many lines of inspiration, and really it describes i think the way that people and community? is brought up, and maybe ideals and morals., this song makes me think alot, and the lines of "there are so many ways to wear..", its like there are so many opportunities that you can make of your life, and there are so many forks in the road and mistakes and everything! Any decision could change your life forever, and no life is lived the same way.

this is such a great poem. i love it. can't believe i'm the first to comment!
even though its really short, i think the simpicity is the best part about it, and the eloquent movement jof the words., she's talking about her infamous boots! ahh gotta love ani.

Ani DiFranco – The Next Big Thing Lyrics 17 years ago
I love this song, its very upbeat, and I think its about how the music business is run by men, and how all they want is the "next big thing", and they're not really out there to look for talent. They're out there to get the person that will make them the most money, and the six people sitting at the bar i think are the people who are her audiences, and she'd rather perform for them and please the small people than the men in their business suits willing/wanting to change her, and make her "glam" or just the next big thing that'll pass like an old trend. This also seems to me, as well as the media-induced world, to be referring to prostitution, possibly?... and how she doesn't like the give it to rich men, but i don't really know? it could have two different meanings.

Ani DiFranco – 4th of July Lyrics 17 years ago
I agree with regardemylasheskgm, and I think this song is about the simple-minded-ness of kids, and how they don't judge anyone, either. They judge based on who is nice to them and who takes the time to talk to them, but they don't judge people based on their background or what they wear or anything like that.

I am always wondering who "Jason" was, and where he is now, that must be so cool to be in an ani song, i wonder if he likes ani or if he is just like different now, or if he kept his non-judgemental ways..hmm. it's interesting to think about. He was seven when the song was written, and it was written from puddledive in 1993 i believe (one of my favoite albumns!), and that must mean that right now (2006, almost 2007), if his birthday is really on the fourth of july, that he is 20 now, i think. Wow., it really shows how much ani has changed her music, how many albumns she put out and such. haha...
Anyway, I love this song, and the lyrics are so honest and the rhythms and instrumentals are just so happy. This is another one of her up-beat songs, and i remember the first time i heard it i had a hard time believing it was ani! haha., i wonder if she ever plays this live?

Joni Mitchell – Chelsea Morning Lyrics 17 years ago
This song just reminds me of one of those summer days where you just chill and have no where to go, but it's so wonderful, and you're with people you like to be around. The lyrics are so pretty, and her voice ties it all together. My friends and I used to listen to this song on repeat and burn inscense. It just lifts your mood =o)

Joni Mitchell – River Lyrics 17 years ago
You know, he put me at ease
And he loved me so naughty
Made me weak in the knees
Oh I wish I had a river
I made my baby say goodbye

^^^ when i first heard these lyrics, the first thought that came to me was abortion, i don't know if that is utterly incorrect, but thats just what i thought.. it almost seems like she was raped or something with the rough-ness she describes, or possibly with an older man who was using her?..or just moving too fast..

The song is beautiful but sad, and reminds me of christmas. It's in Almost Famous, too.

Ani DiFranco – I Know This Bar Lyrics 17 years ago
i'm surprised to see that i'm only the second one to comment on pure artwork. This whole song is somewhat sad and mono-chromatic, thats what my interpretation, there are these people at the bar, who go there everyday and are in a routine day to day, it becomes numb, her narritive in this song is the outsider i believe, and she tells you where all these people are going to be, and at what time, because they're there everyday. I'm not sure if that's supposed to be taken literally, but thats what i think. The kids on the street are even a symbol for nothing changing, because they still have the same hairstyle as always, (nothing changing). The bar is a symbol for being stuck in a rut. Ani used to hang out in that part of town, according to the song, and probably is looking back and it almost seems as if she hasn't been to that bar in a few years, and then she comes back and it hasn't changed positively. She used to hang out there, and it used to probably be her second home (she used to go to alot of bars, for obvious reasons- making her music more well-known, and she used to work in bars illegally in Buffalo, before she was even old enough to drink, it used to be kept quiet, so she could make a living,-- she was fiercely independent, and moved out of her house before most people go to their junior prom or whatever). This bar was probably her escape, and now she looks back on it in a different, almost dark light, and is seeing that now it is exactly the same. She has changed, but this bar has not. She knows all the "killer lines" on the songs, and what number they are, and probably used to love them, and now she doesn't exactly remember them anymore

Tegan and Sara – Living Room Lyrics 17 years ago
It seems, almost stalker-ish, but i love it. She has a secret crush on a person who she is neighbors with it seems, and maybe she saw that this person is hurt, and wants to repair him from his heartache by being the possible replacement because she likes him? She's probably afraid of being emotional attatched to this person, when all he really wants is ass.? idk thats my interpretation though.

Regina Spektor – Ghost of Corporate Future Lyrics 17 years ago
This song makes you think, imagine. It makes me think of the world around me and how everyone is hooked on a certain drink, (coffee in this song..), always has a daily routine of watching the 10 o'clock news, and breathing in all this corporate material. Everything is mass-produced, and plastic, quality is something that is not thought about in products. Well, this song is not all about products being mass-produced, but i think the way people think is more conformed than ever, and it's almost scary. Everyone is the same, and has the same hair and clothes, and walk and talk. Just be yourself, and take time to notice the simple things in life, before they get a hold of you and you come back and it is all gone. This may be a too-deep analysis of this song, but it's my best interpretation. This man in the narrative of the song, is just a basic guy, and is taken aback by the words of this "ghost", and is brought back to reality. It is common in America for business to take over family life (your children have grown and you never made your wife moan). Everyone's features are blending, and anything out of the ordinary is usually frowned upon, the world needs more people that are different!

Ani DiFranco – Every Angle Lyrics 17 years ago
I agree, maggotbrain, this song is defintely is underrated!...To me, this song is about someone ani liked, or maybe had a previous sexual history with. She's forgotten about them for a long time, and maybe stumbled across an old photograph or letter, and the memories are all coming back to her.. she's thinking about "once upon a time" when they had a fission, or relationship spark, and their smells 'mingled', hmm..she probably misses them...

Ani DiFranco – 32 Flavors Lyrics 17 years ago
I like the metaphors in this song, and the guitar tabs are easy to learn and simple, the poetry is hidden in every word, her words pour out and are truely genius. This is from probably one of my favorite albumns- "Ani DiFranco", I like her older work the best. I heard this song in Providence, live. I like the live version better, and she has a symphony-version in living in clip. Best albumn (Living in Clip)... However, this is not my favorite on the albumn.. I like it and it is well-written and sung, etc...but at times it can get a bit repetitive. By repetitive, I mean sometimes this is the only song that 'fans' know, and there is so much more work that is in my opinion better than this song, but Ani is still brilliant all in all. =o)

Ani DiFranco – Cradle and All Lyrics 17 years ago
Have you ever had the feeling where you feel like you're going to cry, and you don't even care at that point whos looking?, she seems like in this song that shes at the point of mental combustion, and just needs to let it all out. She talks about her past, and where she moved and where shes from, she has such a rich history behind her, and has been so many places. At the point in the song "Feel free to listen, feel free to stare", she is at the point where she doesn't care what anyone thinks anymore, and after talks about beauty, and how beauty is just a definition. Ani DiFranco is fucking amazing.

I can't believe there are no comments on this song yet, this albumn has been out since 2005! psh, haha.. this is such a strong little song. I love the rhythms and I'm not exactly sure what this means, but ani grew up with democracy even when her mother was holding her door to door campaigning, which is maybe one of the influences she had and the beginning to her hugely political self. basically all i can come up with so far..

Ani DiFranco – Hide and Seek Lyrics 17 years ago
This is a sad songs when you think about the lyrics, has anyone ever heard the living in clip version of this song?, its a very pretty-sounding musically, song though... There is so much shit ani had to deal with in her past, and i respect her so much for her, she overcame so much. This basically sums up how she was dis-respected and mal-treated because she was a women, and in unsafe to go anywhere, and how even at such a young age, she was even sexually harassed on the street playing hide and go seek! wow
