Regina Spektor – Human of the Year Lyrics 14 years ago
It's been a while since I've been on, for some reason the site hasn't let me log on for quite some time.

In response, I actually am not religious, I don't follow any religion, nor was I brought up in a household/family of religious people. My mother used to be Christian but she lost her faith when her mother died when she was only 21. Even though I'm not Christian it brings me great reassurance to believe that there is some higher being/place we go to when we die. I think it's because I hope my grandma isn't lonely, wherever she is now :(

Regina Spektor – Two Sisters Lyrics 16 years ago
This isn't a cover, it's a song Regina composed with Levon Vince while studying at SUNY music college, and it's meant to be a piece of music for a film, hence the full name of the song "Final film score- Two Sisters". Lots of people have wrote songs based around this story of two sisters who are sleeping with the same man.

I just done some googling and found that a sympton of the black death (bubonic plague) is being short of breath, and would explain the gasping noises. :)

:)

a girl just like me- that's exactly what I had in mind as well with the gasping sounds, it sounds like Regina is almost dying and trying hard to breathe. The person infected longs to be accepted again but knows they cannot become a part of soceity anymore since they must lock themselves away, and will remain their until they pass away, in order not to give the disease to their loved ones.

I think it's because the piano sounds like a lulliby that you would play to a child, very calm and soothing.

Regina Spektor – Consequence of Sounds Lyrics 17 years ago
To me, this starts as Regina learning a new language (Russian to English), and as the song progresses the lyrics become more complex and words are used in more experimental ways. It is Regina's way of expressing how clever a language can be, and how thought provoking words are, the "consonants and vowels" we speak lead to various events which make us who we are.

Regina Spektor – Open Lyrics 17 years ago
I love this song, although I don't think many people have heard it. The lyrics are amazing and suggest one of two ideas to me:

*This song is from the point of view from the piano Regina had to leave behind in Moscow in a child...(crazy I know but I'll come back to this later)

*Or it's about the black plague that swept England in the 1300's

PIANO THEORY!
If you notice "suspended and open" are both types of chords. These chords sound incomplete and unfinished, which could symbolise the loneliness of the piano as its player had to abandon it. The part: "
I
Am
Down the road
And up the hill
I wait for you still"
symbolises the piano awaiting for the return of Regina or someone who will play it, and the "one floor, one ceiling", conveys how lonely and isolated the piano feels (if a piano can feel anything at all- but lets use our imaginations :) ) The part at the end when is says "open up your eyes, come in", it's almost beckoning Regina to open up her eyes, to come back and find the piano she played when she was a young child.

PLAGUE THEORY
The piano theory may be a bit crazy but I think is a more logical idea to the song- if it can be called that, since the only person who knows the true meaning of the song is Regina :)
During the black plague in England, sometimes people who were infected were put in a corner of a room and a wall was built around them in order to stop the disease being spread, which would explain:
I (uh)
Am (uh)
In a room, I've built myself (uh)
For (uh)
Straight walls (uh)
One floor (uh)
One ceiling
Day after day I wake up feeling
Day after day I wake up feeling
Feeling"

This song could be the plea of someone who has been confined to be let out in order to feel "potentially lovely, perpetually human". The part where it says "scrubbing out the stains again" symbolises the people of the towns where the plague is continually washing and scrubbing their clothes to prevent the spread of disease.
The verse that starts "in the night the snow starts falling.." represents the many people who are staying in doors looking through their windows- they are frightened to leave the house incase they become infected. They are appreciating the falling of the snow which appears so beautiful to them, for so long they have been used to seeing people suffering, their bodies becoming "ugly" from the plague.

What does everyone else think?

I absolutely adore this song, one of Regina's most experimental to date in my opinion. And I'd have to agree the second:
"Regin-AH Regin-AH AH AHHHH" is the best bit of the song :)

Regina Spektor – Man of a Thousand Faces Lyrics 17 years ago
I think this song is about a man with a personality disorder, maybe he is schizophrenic- "the man of a thousand faces."

He could also be obsessive, as the lines:
"Good is better than perfect,
scrub till your fingers are bleeding."

As a schizophrenic can have many personalities, it is suggested here in the song that the man makes a "friendship" with the moon:
"And smiles at the moon like he knows her"
yet later in the song it says
"The moon to him was a stranger"

This song to me is the story of a man with a split personality who struggles to fit in with the rest of the world- "Or at least blend in with the pattern."

Ohh, I forgot to add that the psychological interpretation of the tree of knowledge (knowing right from wrong) is a collection of memories, therefore we learn right and wrong from what we are taught and thus remember this and our conscience is formed. This would explain:

"The pictures in his mind arose,
And began to breathe."

Regina Spektor – Blue Lips Lyrics 17 years ago
To me this song has a very clear meaning with lots of hidden religious references.

The line:
"They started out beneath the knowledge tree"
is a religious reference to the "Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil" which is symbolic to Christians and Jews. In Genesis chapters 2/3, we are told how The Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil (also known as the Tree of Knowledge) is in the centre of the garden of Eden.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tree_of_Knowledge_of_Good_and_Evil

Look on that link for more information.

I think the message in this song is that our creator has made a perfect world for us all to live in yet we are mindlessly destroying it:

"They started out beneath the knowledge tree.
Then they chopped it down to make white picket fences"

I think this line means that people's consciences are being destroyed by the media/goverment/the world we live in. The cutting down of the tree is the destruction of our consciences. When Regina tells us that they made the tree into fences, it is symbolising how people are greedy, out to make money from anything they can.

I believe the character in the song, the man who "stumbled into faith", is a highly religious character who is observing the collapse of soceity and goodness:

"And all the people hurried fast,
Real fast,
And no one ever smiled"

This line is saying how everyone is so caught up in their own lives they never take the time to look around and see what they are doing.

"And, marching along the railroad tracks,
They smile real wide for the camera lenses.
They made it past the enemy lines
Just to become enslaved in the assembly lines"

These lyrics are saying how people are proud of such little achievements, everyone is becoming the same, nobody stands out, everyone does the same. There is so much I could write about this song! :)

I would also agree with envirohodges, saying blue, the colour of our blood connects everyone.

I think this song is so beautiful. She sang this when I went to see her and I was enchanted.

Personally I think this is about dying and going to heaven:
"they're just old men,
like on the benches in the park,
except their balding spots are glistening with gold"
I think this lyric is about the angels waiting to greet you, and their "balding spots" which are "glistening with gold" are actually halos.

Regina Spektor – Marry Ann Lyrics 17 years ago
As Roald Dahl is one of my favourite writers, I immediately recognized this song as being set around one of his small stories called "Lamb to the Slaughter." Here's the link for reference:
http://www.classicshorts.com/stories/lamb.html

The basics to the story is a woman named Miss Mary Maloney is told by her husband who she loves dearly, that he has been having an affair.

Mary is devastated, as anyone would be after finding out their partner had been cheating on them. Stunned, she offers to make her husband some tea, maybe to try and pretend she hasn't heard what she has just been told. The lines- "How her apple pies, how he loved her meatloaf etc..." to me is Miss Mary thinking in her head how perfect their life was and her thinking about everything she done about for husband, and the lyrics "served promptly at 7 etc.." is a representation of how perfect and routined their married life was. She had always catered to his every need, and then he cheats on her.

When she is on the way to the kitchen, she takes a leg of lamb out of the freezer to cook for him. Upon hearing the freezer door open her husband says: "For God’s sake, don't make supper for me. I'm going out." Mary is infuriated with this, and without thinking hits him over the head with the leg of lamb, killing him outright with a single blow to the head!
"Miss Mary Ann
preferred her meat
to be freshly butchered."

Mary begins to think quickly of how she can cover up her husbands death so heads down to the local grocery store and asks for a tin of peas :
"Miss Mary Ann
kept her cans
in alphabetical order".

When Mary gets home, she phones the police and pretends she has found her husband dead on the floor, she had everything planned from the minute he confessed he was cheating:
"According to plan."

This story has quite a shocking, yet funny ending. I won't spoil it for anyone, if you want to read it, just visit that link :)

Oh, and when the character says "I've got a perfect body, but sometimes I forget, I've got a perfect body cuz my eyelashes catch my sweat", it's ironic, as Ariel wished for legs, but didn't have them :)

well she did in the end :P

This song to me is based upon the story of the Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Anderson! Just think about it, it is like Ariel wishing she had legs to walk the land and do all the things she dreams about with her lover! :)

Regina Spektor – Somedays Lyrics 17 years ago
I have a feeling that this song is about a person who is in some kind of rehab or clinic for depression/addiction.

Maybe this person has imaginary friends?:
"They're so much stronger than the friends you try to keep, by your side."

To me, the song is about being so unhappy you cannot focus on anything at all: "somedays aren't yours at all" , the only thing you think about is somebody who you love but cannot communicate with or do not want to communicate with in case you hurt them by the way you're feeling:
"I'm not here, not anymore
I've gone away".

The person in the song is obviously in love with a girl but cannot be with them- "I'm in love with your daughter, I wanna have her babies..I'm in love with your daughter..so can I, please?"

The part where Regina sings: "They come in all quiet, sweep up, and then they leave" makes me think of the person in a clinic/rehab sitting on a bed, only noticing the staff/cleaners coming into their room. They feel isolated and alone.

The lyrics "I've gone away, don't call me, don't write....I'm not here, not anymore", is the persons plea to their lover that they don't want to communicate with them because they're afraid their unhappiness will bring them down with themselves.

Please, tell me what you's all think :)

Regina Spektor – Summer in the City Lyrics 17 years ago
Personally I think this song is written from a mans perspective who painfully misses his ex-girlfriend, or wife.

I think the lines "Summer in the city Means cleavage, cleavage, cleavage" mean that in the summer there are many women walking about that his man could have, but he isnt tempted because he is so heartbroken from this love he once had, and no one can replace her. Seeing these women made him remember his girlfriend/wife.

This person feels very lonely, and goes to places to be around others because he thinks it will help him to feel better-
"So I went to a protest
just to rub up against strangers
And I did feel like coming
but I also felt like crying
And it doesn't seem so worth it right now".

When he is walking around in the city, he sees women that resemble his old lover from behind, maybe they have the same hairstyle or whatever, but when he taps them thinking it is that person, he realises its not, and they dont even recognize him-
"I've been hallucinating you, babe
at the backs of other women
And I tap 'em on the shoulder
and they turn around smiling but
there's no recognition in their eyes".

Hope this was helpful :)

Regina Spektor – Reading Time with Pickle Lyrics 17 years ago
I love this song so much.

Regina can put a story into a song and making it heart-warming, shocking, funny- she is amazing with words.

When I hear this song I feel happy. She is reminding people that love can exist and it is always there but nowadays it appears not to be ("Has it always been this way? Is it possible that all of this magic went unnoticed?").

Regina is trying to say there is so many negative things happening in the world today people fail to realise that love is the answer to true happiness- "love is the answer to a question that I have forgotten." Maybe Regina is trying to say that because of all of the war going on in the world love is going unnoticed- "life will turn a better page, no more rage."

I think the "pickles" are symbolic in this song. They represent love. When the girl "made eye contact with a solitary pickle" she feels that she needs to care for them, maybe she feels that she is lacking someone in her life that can give her affection, therefore cares for the pickles and treats them like a child, she is the mother figure- "so feeding time with TV, then sleeping time not sleepy, so reading time with pickle."

Halfway through the song the character realises that love can still be found in the world, it still exists, and her jar of pickles are..well..just a jar of pickles, not someone or something that can show love and care towards her like she showed towards them- "After all, pickle jars are just pickles, and pickles are just pickles." When she returns the pickles, she feels happy and knows that it is still possible to find love in a world full of pain and suffering.

:) Hope this has came in useful to anyone.

Would be glad to hear anybodys ideas!

Regina Spektor – Oedipus Lyrics 17 years ago
Yes, I know Oedipus killed his father, but I'm saying I think that he thought his father just seen his mother as a way of carrying on the family name. I think the character was jealous of his father having a "close" relationship with his mother, even though she felt used in a way.

Regina's use of the lyrics "and they scream and they scream and they scream," is is echoing Oedipus' thoughts, in killing his father. Maybe this song is nothing to do with Oedipus Rex, just a young prince experiencing the Oedipus phenomena (being jealous of the father having a close relationship with the mother, and the child having an abnormal attraction towards their mother.)

That would explain "and I'd stand on my toes to catch a glimpse of my mothers eyes and my mothers skin." The child is obsessed with his mother.

"And to see me made her awful and to touch me made her awful." This is the child telling of the mothers sadness. The mother cannot come to terms with her child killing her husband?? Maybe, I'm not sure.

When Oepidus says

"But not at all a sex machine
She liked to keep her body clean, clean"

I think he feels that all his father uses his mother for is to make children to carry on the family name.

This song is about a breakup. I like the way Regina says "People's children die and they don't even cry forever", its like saying life does go on after a relationship ends, and there is always worse things happening to other people. Its like a girl saying that she is strong after a breakup even though she had her heart broken. Also has a very jazzy/blues feel to it. Love this song so much- Regina is a genius!
