Bloc Party – Biko Lyrics 17 years ago
actually hopetheressomeone, the cancer line you were thinking of is from nirvana's "heart-shaped box", and i honestly don't think that was a conscious choice/reference here.
this song is astoundingly beautiful. going through something like this myself for a good five years, i can understand the sentiment: wanting to be strong enough, wanting to be the cure to someone else's disease. this song is the perfect example of how the person who is dying feels and how the speaker feels.
the only consolation the speaker can offer is the assurance that his loved one is not alone and will never be alone. it's also the only consolation he can give himself- the idea that he will never be alone because the person will watch over him.

i feel like the "toughen up" here is not meant for the speaker's loved one, but to himself. he needs to toughen up now, because he is not representing just himself anymore, since the person is physically gone.
overall, this song is a call for strength, as well as a promise of strength and infinite love. in my opinion, it's a perfect and powerful sentiment.
and not to mention, vocally, kele is spot on. the voices saying "you're not doing this alone" make it even more beautiful. this is hands down my favourite of the record. god bless bloc party.

Bloc Party – American Kids Lyrics 17 years ago
some of the comments on this song are beyond ridiculous. it is not racist. it is not meant to indulge a european superiority.
kele is not against americans. he has openly criticised green day for their representation of western teens, how it fueled the anti-americanism among other nations.
this song is targeting a particular kind of western teen. not because they are american, but because they are indifferent. because they close their eyes to what is happening in the world, because they are soaking in the arrogance of our society- which is more and more unrealistic. because they want to crush any opposition to their hedonistic tendencies, even if it means ignoring all reason.
commentors who took this song so personally are missing the point. we would all do well to criticise these kinds of individuals, because they are the ones who are holding humanity back.
just my humble opinion.

Elijah Wyman – Girls Should Drive Automatics Lyrics 18 years ago
i can't believe no one has commented on this song.
it's absolutely beautiful.
i think it's about finally being with someone you really care about, but then realizing that you're never truly alone because he/she is caught up on the superficial aspects of life, or the parts that don't matter.
like material possessions, and working hard to be able to have them, and living in the safety of the suburbs...that kind of thing.
and he is trying to express to this new lover that he can't wait forever, and that his/her beliefs will never shake his inner faith.
that's just my interpretation.

Reggie and the Full Effect – Playing Dead Lyrics 18 years ago
i think this song is about how, after having done everything in your power to make someone happy, you have realized that it's gone to nothing.
it's a song about refusing to keep fighting for someone who doesn't seem to care about the relationship, and about starting over.
but starting over in an almost cynical sense; starting over by being completely numb to love and it's effects because of the experience you had...
beautiful, but tragic at the same time.

Radiohead – Lucky Lyrics 18 years ago
I don't get optimism from this song at all.
I feel like it's meant to sound optimistic, but in actuality, it's far more cynical.
to me it sounds like it's from the point of view of someone who people looked to as the optimistic one, someone who everyone expected to help out and be the strong one.
but things aren't going well for them, they are falling apart, and now the strong one is looking to be saved, hence: "pull me out of the aircrash, pull me out of the lake, cause I'm your super hero"
and the "we are standing on the edge" sounds like this someone is standing close to losing their faith entirely.
I don't know, that's just my take on it.
beautiful song though...love John Frusciante's cover as well.

The Shins – Split Needles Lyrics 18 years ago
it infuriates me, reading through comments, and finding more critique than praise or insight on the meaning of the song.
if people were quicker to pick up an instrument and write their own bloody songs than they were to write down horrid criticism, there would be a lot more music in the world.
that being said, I think this song is incredibly powerful.
I'm not entirely sure what it means exactly, which is what's fascinating about this song and most Shin songs in general.
they evoke all these kinds of feelings and the lyrics are so cryptic it's hard to know exactly what it means...yet you find yourself loving it anyway.
the sound and feeling I get towards the end of the song is completely different than the beginning.
I agree that this song is about maturing...the end seems like acceptance...like he finally understands that things have to change the older you get.

Arcade Fire – My Body Is a Cage Lyrics 19 years ago
I think this song is about how people can be chained to their conscience...like despite the world being so backwards in the sense that people fight wars and send people to their deaths so easily, almost as if without any scruples, there is still a social awareness of being physical or sexual...like it's something to be ashamed of.
it's as if society considers dancing/getting involved with a stranger you're attracted to is less natural than killing or hurting others.
that's why his mind holds the key to his body, his conscience and all the social niceties in his head are keeping him from letting loose and going with his impulses.

Snow Patrol – Headlights On Dark Roads Lyrics 19 years ago
I think this song is about someone afraid to love.
I feel like for once they want to take action and fall into love (car crash) instead of dreaming of it all the time and never taking a chance (traffic jam).
I feel like they want to take the chance and just fall into love so completely that they are blinded yet somehow guided by it's light and beauty...a beauty that can be dark and ugly once you fall out of love and realize all the bad parts.
that's just my take...I really don't think it's about suicide.

Incubus – A Kiss To Send Us Off Lyrics 19 years ago
I feel like this song is about the war in Iraq...like the soldiers and American people are the ones saying "a kiss to send us off" before the sky falls...aka before we destroy everything and the "cloud" we're living in (denial and safety) gets turn to bits and electracutes us into reality...which is the war is leading to a destructive and evil force.
I feel like it's a criticism, like our overconfidence (believing we can stop terrorism just like that and disregarding the disturbingly large amount of lost lives) is the worst and most dangerous weapon we have.
at least that's my take.

(+44) – Little Death Lyrics 19 years ago
this song is absolutely beautiful...it's admitting the fallacy of humanity: our lack of invincibility.
but instead of hiding from it, this song is about accepting it and recognizing that there is more to life than just thinking about how imminent one's death is.
that no matter what happens, death is inevitable and probably something deeper and harder to grasp than most will realize.
but even though you can't escape death, you have to continue to live and make it count, whether you want to try to understand death or not.
at least that's my take.

Umbrellas – broken ice Lyrics 19 years ago
to me it's about someone who has the potential to live life well and to the fullest but is held back by negativity and the overall fear of living and so their lover is trying to ease their mind a bit by saying hey, let me be the pessimist for once.
stop seeing things so negatively, calm down, and live a little instead of holding your breath waiting for something bad to happen.
beautiful song
