Portugal. The Man – The Dead Dog Lyrics 13 years ago
I have no idea what this song is about, but if I had to interpret it, it might be a commentary on the struggle of the middle class to feel like celebrities, like the people who have it made and barely had to try, and then lie about what a wonderful life it is to be that way, when in reality life at 'The Dead Dog' is empty. Despite having 'food for years' if they live a different way, the middle class are on this eternal struggle taking them 'ten times what it takes' to pay for the lifestyle, fly to mexico to see what the mountains had to offer, only to come back and find everything worse than before (drowned cubs). Why would they try to break out of the system if they can numb the pain in small doses by 'having themselves a time' every weekend, getting drunk, high, etc. The warmth of brief respite comes in 'waves of pain' from of toiling away.

Born Ruffians – Badonkadonkey Lyrics 15 years ago
That's OK, I actually thought that the '6 p.m.' part was making a reference to 'a lesbian' (seriously, am I the only person who heard that?) hahaha

Born Ruffians – Badonkadonkey Lyrics 15 years ago
I believe this song is about a relationship either growing old and getting boring for one of the people, or where one person has straight out from the beginning never been that interested in the other. He/she goes through the motions of buying birthday presents and cooking up dinner, but when they see their couple they don't really feel anything for them. The joy comes basically from having someone 'under their thumb' and that person's love is wasted on them because they're so easily replaceable.

Tokyo Police Club – Nursery Academy Lyrics 15 years ago
I totally agree, it definitely reminds me of a nursing home.
It makes me think of the classic scenario with elderly people where they want to 'go back home' (perhaps after an accident or health problem of some sort) but because of the 'weakness' that they have, they can no longer look after themselves, and so its off to the nursing home with them.
Especially if the line is "It's bad enough you're here
And it's worse that you've come ALONE" as opposed to 'along' because it makes me think that its bad enough to be in a nursing home but even worse if your husband/wife has already died.
I love how TPC have approached such a mature subject. They've grasped the essence of being elderly so well, how degrading it must be for (perhaps an architect?) a responsible, adult person to be treated like a child, which is essentially what awaits us once we're too weak to look after ourselves...

Arctic Monkeys – Plastic Tramp Lyrics 16 years ago
The people who say this is about a fake tramp are totally right.
I think “This world is cruel and most unkind, and horrible is redefined” refers to the fact that, as if the world weren’t cruel enough, horrible is redefined when this guy who actually does have a home stands around asking for money when there really are people who are much worse off than him.

“the only thing you’re sobbing out is your imagination” His sob story is all a fake, the typical story of ‘I need the money to feed my kids’ is all made up.

“Is he really on the street, desperation or deceit and what he's wearing on his feet won't solve our mystery” Is he really desperate or just tricking people? His shoes are crap enough to look like they could belong to a beggar but not necessarily.

“and i am baffled by how you stand there, soaking it in
and do you hide your identity where you hide your grin, better hide your grin”
He stands there soaking in everyone’s sympathy, people feeling sorry for him and giving him money. But on the inside, his true self is laughing away at those suckers that really fall for the act, his identity is well hidden along with his grin, behind a façade of grief and misery.

Arctic Monkeys – The View from the Afternoon Lyrics 19 years ago
The Arctic Monkeys write very literal lyrics, theyre not the kind of band that you have to worry abut figuring out what they mean by what they are saying. Each song is like a story told with music, and although they may make occasional references, what they say is pretty much what they mean.

From what I gather, the song is about going out with your hopes up to get laid despite all the times you have failed before, getting very drunk and sending a message to a girl/X which at the time of writing you think is beautiful and complimentary poetry, but to the receiver just seems like the un-coherent ravings of a p*sshead.

Britney Spears – Touch of My Hand Lyrics 19 years ago
Ok for those of you who are so strongly in denial, think about this:

Only a few years ago it was unheard of to sing songs which spoke openly about sex. And before THAT it was unheard of to even sing about kissing, and doing so in public was very much looked down on.

Do you not despair at your parents when they say you are dressed too provoactively, or at the fact that they think you are still a virgin (for those of you who are a little older)? Do you not laugh and think how oldfashioned their ways are? Well now I'M laughing at YOU, and future generations will too.

So, before you continue to criticise masturbation, just bear in mind that in the future, you will be rememberd as those narrow-minded people from the generation where talking about these things finally became acceptable who were against it and posed complaints.
