| Foo Fighters – New Way Home Lyrics | 8 years ago |
|
As so many artists, this is a hidden-in-plain-sight admission from Dave that he's aligned himself with the occult, but can only hint at it, and can't say so explicitly ("I'll never tell you the secret I'm holding I know these things must bore you but I can't find another way"). He's made the decision to pursue fame and wealth at the expense of all else. Now he's obligated to continue along that trajectory because of the consequences for himself and his family if he changes course (see the fate of Chester Bennington/Chris Cornell), but it does bring material rewards too ("I love this leash that holds me when I try to run away"). Having spurned the divine path to eternity he's had to put his faith in a "new way home" before he dies ("I'm still trying to keep this time from running out") - transhumanism/alchemy occult magic. But it's a dead end. Literally. |

| Soundgarden – Outshined Lyrics | 16 years ago |

Under the 'Lyrics' heading, there's a snippet from an interview with Chris about the meaning behind the song on its Wikipedia page. And just to state the obvious: "Looking California" (hot) "and feeling Minnesota" (cool). |

| Death Cab for Cutie – Expo '86 Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| I'd like to know about the origins of the song title too; I was 8 during Expo '86, and it was one of the most exciting periods of my life. The sense of wonder, amazing technology, and the general buzz surrounding Vancouver's centennial celebrations made for a heady experience, the whole exhibition was like a giant kids playground, it was quite an experience. | |
| Nirvana – Sliver Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| It's late: I meant /alternated/ between. | |
| Nirvana – Sliver Lyrics | 17 years ago |

Always thought Kurt alternative between: "Grandma take me home" ...and "Gravitating home" Boo. |

| Type O Negative – Dead Again Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| Is 'droog' from A Clockwork Orange, or slang I'm not familiar with? :D | |
| Oasis – Slide Away Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| This track just randomly came into my head after umpteen years, so had to go listen to it. I'm not an Oasis fan per se, but Definately Maybe is a masterpiece. | |
| Foo Fighters – New Way Home Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
Arg, hit Enter too soon. The guitar segment immediately before the build up sounds very Smashing Pumpkins, and the melody - generally - really reminds of me Fleetwood Mac. I sort of lost interest in FF after this album, their debut will always have a special place in my heart, it's much more 'grunge' than later releases, and they've gradually grown away from that genre and developed a new sound. I applaud Dave for carving out his own niche, and I'm happy for his success, but I'm not a big fan of their newer style. |

| Foo Fighters – New Way Home Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| I haven't listened to the album for almost 10 years, but for some reason this song came into my head just now. I've always loved the way the pace and volume build to the end - to an earlier commenter, it IS a great song to drive to! | |
| Katatonia – My Twin Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
Beautiful track by the way - also - surely it's: "you used to be like my twin and all THAT'S been" rather than "you used to be like my twin and all its been" |
|
| Katatonia – My Twin Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I think the earlier messages are reading too much into it, this sounds like someone who's suffering the agony of relationship breakup - probably in a protracted way: "are you strong when you're with him" ...as though they've had a "we need to talk" discussion and she's confessed she's fallen for someone else, that their own relationship doesn't fulfill her anymore. "the neck, and then the chain the head is hung in shame" I think this is much more straightforward than suggested too. If you're feeling guilty you avoid eye contact. She's come to break up with him, and she can't bring herself to look at his face, her gaze is lowered, and draws down as the news settles in - so first her stare is directed at his neck, then falls to the 'chain' hanging below his neck. |

| Beseech – Restless Dreams Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| The undulating vocal inflection Lotta uses on this track is really enchanting, she should employ it more often! | |
| Fear Factory – School (Nirvana cover) Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Inevitably a very pale imitation of the original, but it's cool that Fear Factory have paid homage to Nirvana with this track (school is probably my *favourite* Nirvana track - it's a close thing vs Sifting. Bleach gets better with every listen). | |
| Type O Negative – Red Water (Christmas Mourning) Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
The source material is incredibly melancholic, but this is an achingly beautiful song - possibly my favourite Type O track. Clever play on words with the 'mourn/morn' opener. |
|
| Pulp – I Spy Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| My favourite Pulp track: if you don't have Common People in your album collection, you're doing yourself a dis-service. Utterly brilliant, it's lost none of it's edge in the intervening years. | |
| Suede – We Are The Pigs Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| ONE comment? One! Suede are so under-rated internationally. The guitar introduction is hauntingly beautiful, they've really done some amazing stuff. | |
| The Start – Communion Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Certainly sounds like it - Aimee Echo is dead cute, someone was a lucky boy... | |
| Soundgarden – Searching with My Good Eye Closed Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| I haven't spent any time thinking about the meaning behind the track: it sounds really like-affirming, it's a classic /Fuck Yeah!/ Soundgarden song, the production is perfect. | |
| Type O Negative – Hail and Farewell to Britain Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
Ah-huh! All is revealed in this article: http://www.getmetal.com/article/articleview/1272/1/1/ |
|
| Type O Negative – Hail and Farewell to Britain Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| I really want to know what inspired this track - it's clearly about a friendship that fell apart because of some perceived abuse of trust - but what more? Where any why does Britain come into it? | |
| Arcade Fire – Neon Bible Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I'd taken that the "Neon Bible" to mean "television" - news reports bring is a constant stream of tragedy and despair: we're ruining the planet, we're perpetually at war, we're threatened by disease. It really does give you the impression that there isn't much change of survival. The album - this musical genre - doesn't do much for me, personally, but I do quite like this track, it's got a lullaby quality to it that's quite hypnotic. |

| Within Temptation – Our Solemn Hour Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
So, Latin, then: 'Sanctus' is 'holy', and I gather that 'espiritus' is 'Breath'. Is that Churchill in the background, then - given the general lyrical overtones? A plea for delivery from the insanity of war, and war-makers? |

| Kittie – Run Like Hell (Pink Floyd cover) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
Women make excellent metal vocalists. I can't take any male doing "death grunts" seriously at all, it sounds utterly ridiculous. The fact that it's so unexpected makes it acceptable from Kittie. Elsewhere, Courtney Love has an incredible voice, I love her singing style, and I have a lot of respect for the amazing vocal range of female performers in 'gothic' groups - Within Temptation, Leaves' Eyes, The Gathering, Nightwish et al. |
|
| Kittie – Run Like Hell (Pink Floyd cover) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
It's a pointless exercise to compare versions: Kittie /obviously/ chose to cover the song as an homage to Pink Floyd, and must have done so with their blessing, or they'd not have been given permission to perform it. It's makes a lot more sense to judge them as separate tracks, I admire Kittie for re-interpreting it so completely, most covers are straight copies of the original which makes you wonder why they bothered. Whoa. That's a bizarre co-incidence: Kittie's version of Run Like Hell just started playing on my Pandora.com station. The Floyd version - like all Wall tracks - is deeply unsettling and much more psychologically involving. The Kittie version is raw, powerful and aggressive. The Floyd version makes me want to hide behind the sofa. The Kittie version makes me want to head bang, and smash things. |

| Lacuna Coil – Aeon Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
A really beautiful track, my current Lacuna Coil favourite. I'm not sure about the stop-start bit in the middle, it's kind of jarring - I don't know if it's an artefact of the production process, but there's an audible 'click' each time, which sounds wrong. I have to agree with Pazzo, it's a shame it's so short, but the lead-in to the next song is great. |
|
| Oasis – Columbia Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| Does anyone know what's being spoken in the lead in to the vocal at the very beginning? | |
| Type O Negative – Unsuccessfully Coping With The Natural Beauty Of Infidelity Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
Where's the: "Don't think I don't know what you're doing you stupid twat" line in the above? Great track - this and "Everyone I know is dead" are awesome TON tracks |
|
| The Offspring – Denial, Revisited Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| One of the best Offspring tracks, they're quite an eclectic group really, with this is one of their more ballady songs. | |
| Pink Floyd – Goodbye Blue Sky Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| This track has such a haunting melody. My parents are huge fans, but I found hearing The Wall from a tender age quite disturbing. | |
| Silverchair – Freak Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
Changed my mind completely. Suspect it's a song about the friction generated when one of your friends starts dating someone you can't stand, and whose lifestyle and behaviour seem odd and banal. - "Your baby's got rabies" - "your girlfriend is crazy"! - "Sitting on a ball In the middle of the Andes": a reference to the back-packing phenomenon common amongst late teens? The weird-girlfriend has an idea that taking part in some faux-zen mountain sitting ritual would be a 'really cool thing' to do. The "I'm a freak/of nature" bit echoes the comebacks he's heard from the wacky girlfriend - reference the "Kurt smells like Teen Spirit" remark on Tobi Vail's wall. |
|
| Silverchair – Freak Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
Silverchair at their best - the live version is great too. I'd always thought this song was about /striving/ to be a bit kooky and individual, but lacking the confidence and original thinking to know how to make your own mark. It's like he /wants/ to be a beatnik, but he's not sure what he needs to do to stand out from the crowd. But having re-read the lyrics several times, I'm not sure that that fits. More thinking required! |

| Counting Crows – Catapult Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
This is the only Counting Crows song that I've ever really liked - and it's a corker. I've always misheard the 'falling asleep' line as "I want to be the last thing that you hear when you fall", which sounded incredibly dramatic and has never failed the hairs-standing-on-end test, so I'm a bit ambivalent to find that I was wrong. I can't understand why this track isn't on the 'Best Of' album, as far as I'm concerned it's their finest moment. |
