| M.I.A. – Paper Planes Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| This is satire on the way everyone sees immigrants, right? Everyone thinks they're gangsters/hustlers, only caring about weed and shooting people. | |
| Arcade Fire – Rebellion (Lies) Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
I just read the Myth of the Cave by Plato off a link from another song, and I see some more allusions to it. In the myth, a family of people are chained to a wall for their entire lives, watching shadows of puppets on the opposite wall. The person who could guess which puppet would come next would be regarded as intelligent. One person gets freed, and although angry that he's been taken to a new world, he acclimates and, after realizing the wonder of reality, goes back to the cave. If he gets chained up again, he would be horrible at the game, and regarded as stupid. If he frees the prisoners, they would rather kill him than go to the light. This made me think of this song. Everyone is accustomed to needing sleep to survive. If one person discovers that they don't need sleep, he would be regarded as stupid and a liar. If he forced people to stay awake, they kill him rather than have him "kill" them. |

| Arcade Fire – Neighborhood #3 (Power Out) Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| For the last time, just because it's about the ice storm does not mean it has no deeper meaning other than that. It was inspired by it, not really about it. Soundboy and LyricallyIclined have it right about the deeper meaning, the people yelling, "jesus christ its the ice storm idiots," are right about the inspiration. | |

| 3 Doors Down – Citizen Soldier Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
I dunno - when a song is funded by the national guard it seems a bit like a scheme to get teens to recruit with the army. Also, my history teacher played this song to the class to teach us about propaganda. My history teacher is awesome. |

| The Decemberists – The Island: Come and See; The Landlord's Daughter; You'll Not Feel the Drowning Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
The colonial american idea sticks as the one that makes that makes the most sense to me. Come and See could be the view of America most people had before landing - savage, and horrible, yet inviting. The "we'll not go home again," line alludes to the finality of going to America, the fact you'll probably never go home unless you can bear (or afford) the horrible voyage again. Landlord's Daughter seems to be much more metaphorical. Could the rapist be Britain, and the daughter the colonies? I'm not sure about how this works with the landlord also having to be Britain, but still. Britain seems less intent on getting money in the end, than with the "conquest" (coughcough) of America, forcing her to obey, breaking her spirit. Of course, this could be about a physical rape, but I enjoy over analyzing stuff. :D You'll Not Feel the Drowning could be an extension of the last song, the attempted rape/murder of America. Coins on the eyes reminds me of the taxes Britain would force on America. Sort of a last ironic gesture, "You can have your money, but I don't think you could enjoy it very much...". The line about heeding the captain also reminds me of the relationship between America and Britain. Heed the captain (England), or else. The sorrowed cry could be regret as America began to win the fight for independence? |

| Dave Matthews Band – The Stone Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
I take this as Judas after the crucifixion. Dave does seem to have a bit of an obsession with spirituality and religion in his songs, so, knowing the song writer, it fits. Just look at the lyrics. It screams that someone is arguing with himself, about how he did not mean to do evil: "But what I did I thought needed be done". Judas is regretting turning Jesus in, "praying," for a way to show everyone he isn't the evil, messed up, corrupted man, we all know him as today. |

| Cold War Kids – Welcome to the Occupation Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
Sorry, didn't finish my last comment ,or "pigeons on a stool", who can entertain them. It's fine to want to be entertained, but when you have an obvious disdain for smart people, or even different people ("Treating your kids like an obligation", "goodbye valedictorians, goodbye punks") there's a problem with your country. |
|
| Cold War Kids – Welcome to the Occupation Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
Am I the only one who recognizes the genius of this song? The lyrics basically say that America doesn't want geniuses anymore, or people who can really help us. They just want pawns, or "pigeons on a stool", |

| Cold War Kids – Dreams Old Men Dream Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
Last two lyrics: I've been up chasing my childhood with a pin These are dreams old men dream All the rest above are right. Anyway, it seems like the protagonist is realizing he's old, crossed with a meditation on how life goes past so fast. Favorite line: "Thought I was nervous like a mailman [...] But I was at our anniversary toasting thirty years." One moment he was scared of commitment, and the next he's been married thirty years. So true. |

| The Beatles – A Day in the Life Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| I don't think this has anything to do with the Paul is Dead thing. I think the first part has to do with John's mother, Julia, who was hit by a car and was killed, a la "[s]he blew his mind out in a car, [S]he didn’t notice that the lights had changed" I do understand that it uses masculine pronouns, but I doubt John really cared. It could've been a slip up on John's part, or intentional. Who knows? | |
| The Killers – For Reasons Unknown Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
This is pretty much a breakup song, but more inteligent. The main character wakes up in the morning, possibly hung over. He looks in the mirror, and he sees he looks a little older. Not remembering what happened last night, he packs his bags. He knows he has to leave, but he doesn't know why. He drives to the airport, gets on the plane. He notices he's sad, but he doesn't know why (My heart, it don't beat... For reasons unknown) He finally has a flashback to what happened last night. He sat down with his girlfriend, and broke up with her, telling her that he doesn't love her anymore. She was probably a fiance, or even a wife, seeing as she seems really important to him. All in all, a really awesome song. |

I'm starting to think all these songs are conected in some way or another, due to the fact they keep using the names Ella, Tina, Chelsea, Vince, and the Bluebird, but the only conection I can find is between Chelsea Dagger and Everybody knows You Cried Last Night. Maybe it's just a coincidence |

| The Decemberists – The Chimbley Sweep Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I have a suspicion that this song is part of the Leslie Ann Levine / We both go Down Together trilogy, if only for the line in Leslie Ann: "The only Love I've known is a Chimney Sweep" In the beginning it sounds rather like he's a ghost, too. I might be completly wrong and it's based on the Blake poem. Who knows. |
|
| The Decemberists – Cocoon Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Ibeleive this song is about two survivors of Pompeii. They are in love, and maybe were having sex during the explosion. They are completly encased in ash, but alive and in love. they are holding hands and talking, just waiting to die. They are holding hands when one of them dies, his finger curling up out of her hands. She is left alone to die in utter boredom. | |

| I think the murder Trilogy goes Jenny was a friend of mine, Bourbon on the Wall and Midnight show, In that order. Jenny is about him killing Jenny and getting questioned. Bourbon on the wall, from it's name, is about him drowning his guilt with..well.. Bourbon. Midnight Show is about him finally admitting what he did to his new girlfriend. | |
| The Killers – Why Do I Keep Counting? Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
I think this song is about a guy committing suicide, but regretting it as he falls. here’s a plane and I am flying. There’s a mountain waiting for me. Oh these years have been so trying, I don’t know if I can use them. Am I strong enough to be the one? Will I live to have some children? -I think that this part is about him asking "can he survive this?" As he's falling he looks at his surroundings and sees a plane. Or maybe he's falling from the plane. Anyway, The mountain is heaven. Help me get down, I can make it. Help me get down. Help me get down, I can make it. Help me get down. If I only knew the answer, I wouldn’t be bothering you. Father, help me get down, I can make it. Help me get down. Help me get down, I can make it. Help me get down. If I only knew the answer, and if all our days are numbered, then why do I keep counting? -This is about him asking god if he can survive. He says if he survives, he'll be good. He then thinks, why would he want to survive? He'll die anyway. He is counting the seconds until he...well...goes splat. My sugar’s sweet, and so obtainable. This behavior’s so unexplainable. The days just slip and slide like they always did. The trouble is my head won’t let me forget. I took one last good look around. (So many unusual sounds.) I gotta get my feet on the ground. The last two lines should be easy to figure out. In the beginning, he thinks about how bad a decision it was. Then he thinks about how bad life was. Help me get down, I can make it. Ahhh . . . Help me get down, I can make it. Help me get down. Help me get down, I can make it. Help me get down. If I only knew the answer, I wouldn’t be bothering you. Father, help me get down, I can make it. Help me get down. Help me get down, I can make it. Help me get down. If I only knew the answer, and if all our days are numbered . . . . would you help me get down? If I only knew the answer. If I change my way of living, and if I pave my streets with good times, will the mountain keep on giving? And if all of our days are numbered, then why do I keep counting? This part is him saying that he would be good if he survives. But then he thinks, since he almost gave his life, will he still get good-will from heaven? All in all, a good song. Great. Awesome. |
