Ryan Adams – Kindness Lyrics 14 years ago
I think it's about how far off track a human can get, in the absence of love, that most basic of our sentiments --- without receiving, and being able to receive affection, appreciation, acceptance, we can get so cold and hard inside, and feel so distant from life and other people. And that can feel terminal. But that can all be turned around, melted, in just a moment or two, by the right gesture, the right words or the right touch from the right person. It can all come flooding back, with just a little kindness.

Thrice – All That's Left Lyrics 15 years ago
To me, this song is about being a young idealist and growing up and finding your ideals have no place in the real world, that there are no answers to the questions, the search, that has given your life meaning for so long. All the things you swore by have faded into distant memory. And the process of so vigorously striving after the "truth" has itself left us empty and drained, because to search for truth in a world where there is none to be found is a demoralizing, fruitless pursuit.

The "can we be saved" line is basically to ask, after all this, is there anywhere to turn? Is there anyway to regain the vitality and the passion afforded by youth and ideals?

Frightened Rabbit – Backwards Walk Lyrics 15 years ago
i read that line as saying he wants to close the door on the relationship, but his pants are always on the floor, preventing the door from ever closing. emotionally the relationship is over, bankrupt, and destructive. but we still crave physicality, and we can love someone sexually and continue to be drawn back to them like a drug addiction, even though you know its ultimately detrimental and can't last.

Drake – Successful Lyrics 16 years ago
forgot one thing: the "i suppose" at the end of the first time through the hook displays the same lack of passion for this endless, empty dream. he's goin through the motions, but at the same time, he's not even sure.

Drake – Successful Lyrics 16 years ago
instantly noticeable and noteworthy: the relationship between the lyrics and the musical tone. Normally a song with the subject matter of "Successful"s hook would have a danceable club beat -- something to get amped up to -- but here, both the beat and the melody are mournful, as are the vocal deliveries. And normally, the approach to the material-success driven rap/hiphop/r&b is "fake it til you make it" -- if you ain't already got it, rent out a yacht, a big house, some flashy cars, and pretend you do. but this song doesn't talk about what they do have, or even what they're going to have, but what they "wanna" have, what they wish they had. even weezy's verse expresses dissatisfaction: "i'm on the other side, but it's a short gate". could that gate be hopped? could it all be taken from him, just like that? "I want the glory" implies he still doesn't feel the glory, despite all his money and fame; "I'm tired of the bullshit", he's getting fed up.

This is a dirge, a death of the dream -- we've wanted these things for so long, we don't know how to not want them. will they even satisfy, if grasped? what do we do now?

Michael Jackson – Will You Be There Lyrics 16 years ago
Michael, I love you so much. I'm sorry you had to suffer so much shit -- thank you for your love and your music, and if we do go anywhere after we die, I know you're in a better place; I know you're with God. Rest in peace, I love you.
