Im not sure its about crystal meth you know, more likely just drugs in general ie mdma or cocaine, these being the drugs of choice round here, crystal meth is more an American problem, I would have thought, as we hardly ever hear of it in the UK and Noel Gallagher and the Chemical Brothers were probably not stupid enough to try it.

Now correct me if I'm wrong but I'm thinking this album was made when he was still signed to Kill Rock Stars before Dreamworks had probably even heard of him due to the fact he does an album after this before XO his first Dreamworks album, also it was befoire he was a drug addict/alcoholic, I think Elliottt Smith had a lot more to say than just moan about his own life and he probably meant this song to be taken on many levels, thanks for reading, Thanks for the great tunes Elliott, RIP |

This song is defo about the music scene in LA, rich record companies gambling on what the next big thing would be, Dreamworks snapped him up then he wanted out. Similar lines in Kings Crossing:- 'I get my cheque paid from the trash treasury'

Elliott Smith was clean for six months or so before he died he was learning how to record music digitally so he could try different things, his suicide was not a pre-meditated thing, hell theres a small chance it wasnt even suicide. I dont think he meant this song to be a farewell from himself, he just liked making dark songs. |

I assumed it meant Britain was the 51st state, if you like, a smaler version of USA. maybe 'counts the waves that somehow didnt hit her' is a reference to how Britain maintains a better relationship with most of the world than USA does when we do the same things wrong as you ie going to war, indulging in horrendous wealth at the expense of other counries' well being.
'Revolvers been turned over' is obviously turning over a vinyl copy of the Beatles' legendary album.
Some Americans seem to think that London Bridge was bought by them when in fact it was the wrong bridge and London Bridge is safe and sound straddling the River Thames as we speak.
Also Britain is very well known for its alcohol problem(just ask any European soccer fans).
Its obviously not entirely about Britain but I think theres a case. |

Ive listened to this song for ages but never thought it about his mum, it clearly is though, as for drugs i dont think Elliott was on drugs as this was written a long time before his drug problems. Also i dont think his stepdad sexually abused him just beat him, and that book elliott and the big nothing is rubbish, no-one who truly knew him was involved in the making of that book, all his family and friends declined to get involved with it.
