Bright Eyes – If the Brakeman Turns My Way Lyrics 18 years ago
this is so beautiful, my favorite off Cassadaga, along with I Must Belong Somewhere. and it's conor playing piano... i never knew he could do that. but then maybe i'm just clueless.
the lyrics have such a feeling of helplessness, but at the same time acceptance of that. i actually find it a lot more hopeful than a lot of his songs; it's like, we can't control our fate, but we should find peace with that. so pretty!
and i know everyone's going to hate me for saying this, and that it's totally cliche to compare them, but to me conor's vocals sound sort of dylan-ish on this song.

Bright Eyes – Patient Hope in New Snow Lyrics 19 years ago
i love how in the beginning it takes him so long to actually start singing, he goes "alright" twice and then it seems like he changes his mind... it's just so hesistant and cute and it makes me smile. and the song itself is so beautiful, yet you can feel the pain he's going through... it seems like such a "so close and yet so far" situation, if you get what i mean, as do some of the other songs on this album.

The Ataris – Looking Back On Today Lyrics 19 years ago
the first time i heard this song i was sitting in in the bus station at heathrow airport having just got off the plane from delhi (where i live)... i was feeling all happy to be home and wonderful and jetlagged and anticipating wonderful english foods such as toast and marmite, and suddenly this song comes up on my mp3 player... i had no recollection of putting it there. it was just so sweet and beautiful, and will always remind me of that moment sitting on a wall waiting for the bus...
sorry, i know no one cares, but i just had to describe my happy memory relating to this song. it was the beginning of a wonderful summer...

Bright Eyes – Gold Mine Gutted Lyrics 19 years ago
"it was grass-stained jeans and incompletes
and a girl from class to touch"
- i love that, it just sums up the whole awkward adolescence thing perfectly. i really don't think this song is about cocaine, though it obviously has references to it. it always made me think more of a relationship he had, and being lost in general, with or without drugs. so please don't get stuck in the rut of assuming it's only about coke addiction, because you'll miss so much of the meaning.

Bright Eyes – Blue Angels Air Show Lyrics 19 years ago
hiddeninromance, this song really reminded me of catcher in the rye as well! i was just listening to it for the first time on noise floor and it just made me think of holden and his relationship with his little sister phoebe right away... the way he enjoys her innocence and chilhood even though he's lost his. so i guess conor sort of feels that way about his cousin, and is looking back at what is was like to be younger and be able to find joy in everything. this is really a beautiful song.

for me this kind of goes along with living in your letters... it also seems to be about a tough long-distance relationship. or death, i guess. and there are hints of suicide in both.

Bright Eyes – The Awful Sweetness of Escaping Sweat Lyrics 19 years ago
ok i always thought he was singing about a guy... adolescent homosexual curiosity? then shame about it and fear of getting caught... it could be fictional, i guess. anyway for some reason it planted that idea in my mind.

Tilly and the Wall – Lost Girls Lyrics 19 years ago
this made me think of child trafficking... like forced prostitution and stuff. i live in india and it's a real problem here, so i was really glad to hear a song that touched on that subject. i was really surprised that no one else seemed to have thought that. the whole idea of lost girls in a dark room, frightened, no one will ever save them... it's really haunting. maybe that's not what it was written about, but that's what it means to me.

Tilly and the Wall – Coughing Colors Lyrics 19 years ago
ok i forgot to add this in my first comment, also i see some like christian symbolism... "she would...put nails through her hand". like christ was an outcast, and was persecuted, but still kept his faith and ideals. and then the "nails through her hand" would symbolize crucifiction. like sacrificing yourself for others. so in a way i kind of think he's comparing her to christ...(don't get me wrong, i'm not overly religious, but that's what it makes me think of)

Tilly and the Wall – Coughing Colors Lyrics 19 years ago
oh my god this song makes me cry!
yeh, i agree, it's about someone who doesn't fit with the norms of society, and gets their dreams crushed and breaks down because of it. it's a love story, told by the guy (or girl, i guess, though it's a guy singing)
who loves her, and maybe isn't as much as a rebel or watever, like the lines "she was cooler than you/way cooler than me" might suggest, but gets put in kind of the same position because of their connection to this person.

Idlewild – El Capitan Lyrics 19 years ago
thank you freedom-fighter, i always loved this song but i never knew what el capitan was! i mean i kind of figured this song was about suicide, but i never bothered to think about what it actually was... stupid really. but now it means a lot more... it's weird, this song is so catchy and singalongable yet it's about such a depressing subject.

Idlewild – Let Me Sleep (Next To The Mirror) Lyrics 19 years ago
this is one of my favorite songs ever! i agree with everyone that said it's about someone with low self-esteem.. i dunno if it's like his girlfriend or if he's singing about himself? or maybe just in general about people who hate themselves.... a statement about the fashion industry! ok, watever, i'm rambling. but i just want to say, you know how in the chorus there's the guitar and stuff and singing AND THEN you can hear someone picking out a few notes on the piano? it's so simple, but it took me a year of listening to the song constantly to even hear it! i find it so amazing now, like there was something hidden the whole time that i finally discovered. or maybe i just don't pay enough attention...

Idlewild – Welcome Home Lyrics 19 years ago
i love this song! it's definitely one of my favorite idlewild songs. i love the harmony at the end when roddy's just singing "welcome home" over and over. anyway, on to the meaning... i think it's kind of like he's trying to end a relationship, but he still loves her. and they haven't been fighting or anything, but they've just grown apart... so he's breaking up really gently because he doesn't want to upset her or himself, he thinks it's better for them to move on. when he says "you don't need to welcome me home" he's saying stop trying so hard, i know it's not working, it's ok. anyway that's one interpretation, but i think it can also be listened to as a love song.
also, has anyone else noticed roddy woomble's references to acting/theater? like in this song he talks about "everyone needs their own empty stage" and in el capitan he says "in a cast that's taking places, i'm unsure of where i'm meant to be". also on his recent solo album there's a song called act IV. maybe it doesn't mean anything, but as an idlewild fan and a wannabe actress i find it a really cool metaphor.

Bright Eyes – Poison Oak Lyrics 19 years ago
this is a little random, but this song always reminded me of the outsiders by s.e.hinton.... i'm pretty sure that wasn't what conor oberst wrote it about, but i first heard it around the same time i was reading that book, and it just connected. like the lines "and i fell asleep with you still talking to me/you said you weren't afraid to die" always made me think of the part where ponyboy and johnny are sitting outside at night because they're scared to go home, and johnny is talking about how sometimes he wishes he would die so his dad couldn't hit him anymore. and then later, when johnny's dying in the hospital, he tells ponyboy that he's ready to die and it doesn't scare him anymore. and later parts of the song, especially "when you turned away/and you slammed the door/when you stole the car and drove towards mexico" reminded me of the character dally, who's "bad boy"ness is really just a cover for his own insecurities and pain, and eventually leads to his downfall. the song also reminds me of ponyboy's bond with his brothers darry and sodapop.
i don't know, that's just how i think of it. this is one of my favorite ever bright eyes songs, and the outsiders is one of my favorite books, so i really love the connection i feel between them. i think conor oberst probably wrote this about his brother or a childhood friend. it's a beautiful song, and one of the first ones i ever learned to play on my guitar, so it has another special meaning to me.
(if i screwed up any details about the outsiders, i'm really sorry. i haven't read it in a while.)
